A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
|
Last Friday, a congregant sent me an article written by the president of Congregation Beth Israel, in Charlottesville, wherein he recalled in detail what happened in his congregation when Nazi's decided to march in that city. At one point, he stood on the front porch with two hired guards while white supremacists and neo-Nazis walked by shouting, "There's the synagogue. Let's burn it down!" and "Jews will not replace us!" As a congregational rabbi, I trembled when I read that 40 plus people inside, finishing their Shabbat morning prayers, were told to sneak out the back door of their synagogue for their safety. This is the United States in 2017, not Germany in the 30's and 40's. To read the full article, click here: CHARLOTTESVILLE
With all of the hate we are witnessing in the world, I have spent the last few weeks talking about Ahavat Hinam: Baseless Love. While we need to vigilantly fight against anti-Semitism and racism and any negative "ism", at the same time, we must learn to express love for those around us.
We have just entered the month of Elul which begins the countdown to Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Our Tradition tells us that Elul is a time of reflection and introspection. It is in Elul that we begin to work on repentance; it is now that we begin the process of returning to our best selves. It is our work in Elul that will enable us to request of God, a good, fruitful and meaningful New Year.
This year, part of our return should include the ability to accept those who are different from us and, perhaps, to try to teach others to do the same. Our congregant, Rabbi Paula Mack Drill, recently quoted Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, who said: "The test of faith is whether I can make space for difference. Can I recognize God's image in someone who is not in my image, whose language, faith, ideal, are different from mine? If I cannot, then I have made God in my image instead of allowing God to remake me in His."
The JCC's president, Rose Valentine, and I have penned a letter to Congregation Beth Israel offering our support and prayers to help them heal from the nightmare that they experienced. To see this letter, click here: LETTER. As a congregation we must take concrete steps toward fighting against the rise of blatant anti-Semitic activities in our country. I will be looking for ways to achieve this goal and I encourage any person in our congregation to offer suggestions of her, or his, own.
At the same time, I am requesting that we each make it a point to pursue performing random acts of kindness. Our ability to change the world is only limited if we do nothing. As the Rabbis advise in Pirkei Avot: We are not required to complete a task, however, we are required to begin it.
Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay

THE WEEK THAT WAS...
|
It's a success when you have to bring more chairs out. We set up 50 chairs for the movie "There Are Jews Here" last Sunday night but had to add 30 more. The movie made many in the audience sad when they saw the closing of synagogues in communities such as Laredo, TX, Dotham, AL, Butte, MT and Latrobe PA due to a shift in demographics... but there were cheers when the film showed our members bringing the Torahs into the JCC from the synagogue that closed in Latrobe. Don Pripstein, who comes from the area and knew the folks from Latrobe, filled us in on the background of the community. Rabbi Jay brought the two Torahs out and cited The Herman Family and Paula & Howard Hait for donating them to our synagogue and Harold Farin & Don Pripstein for making all the arrangements for the transfer.
Next documentary showing:
On September 10th, at 7pm, Jerry Lewis: The
Man Behind the Clown will be shown. This is a
study of the late Jerry Lewis' ability to make the masses laugh through visual gags, pantomime, and signature slapstick humor --a close-up look at the man behind the clown persona.

MORRIS L. SHAPIRO ENDOWMENT FUND
All organizations should have a substantial endowment fund to ensure its continuation. Except for dire emergencies, the principal amounts in the fund cannot be used to run the organization. Interest earned from the account may be used. As previously announced, Herb and Selma Shapiro have created a JCC Endowment Fund to honor Herb's father. It will be known as "The Morris L. Shapiro Endowment Fund at the JCC of LBI " The Shapiros have generously pledged a total of $50,000 to fund this. While initially established by the Shapiros, anyone may contribute to this important fund.
Join Herb and Selma in helping assure the continuity of our JCC, and our ability to continue providing a full-service congregation to serve the Jewish people of the area. All members are encouraged to help this important effort by contributing to this Fund.
