Dear Animal Lovers, Advocates, Rescuers & Activists:

Way back when I was 16 yrs old and still living in Ottawa, I remember reading one day about how Toronto was building this "CN Tower" ... and I remember being so impressed at the time, with how "progressive" Toronto seemed to be.

It wasn't long after that, that I actually decided to move to Toronto, and I made it here by the summer I turned 20.  I then spent 30 amazing years living in downtown Toronto, and have to say, bar the pollution (so egregious to all my pets), I loved every minute of it. The food, the arts & culture, the diversity, the business opportunities, the MUSIC! ... I eventually got my first dog Cyril and raised him on the downtown streets... Then one rescue after the other... I started learning about the rescue community and I was even more impressed than ever! I honestly never knew there were so many good people on this earth, until I started to work in rescue. In 1996, I went to the wall to get custody of Max -- a local "backyard dog"... who at the time, had so few options...In the 6 years it took for Cyril and I to get custody of him, I had exhausted nearly every avenue and was literally, at my wits' end ... Yet, the City of Toronto came through again. I finally got a sympathetic Toronto Humane Society investigations agent to hear me on the subject of Max, and it was indeed that person -- Mike (dammit, can't remember his last name, tho I know he's still on this newsletter dist list) who moved (literal) mountains, enabling me to bring Max in from the cold, and home to die... I've had many fine hours, I will say. But this, was my finest:

All these years later, I remain fiercely proud of The City of Toronto. And in particular, the various communities within it, who work so tirelessly to save animals. I've witnessed our community grow and grow; have worked with so many groups within it, all targeting different animals and different animal issues...and building SO many successes through the years. It's really been quite amazing to see, and to be a part of.

And now, Toronto declares its' very own "Feral Cat Awareness Day".

Thank you "Tranna", for all the hope you gave me as a teenager -- the hope for a better, more fruitful and contributive professional life, and for all the amazing rescuers and activists I've been privileged to meet and work with... not to mention the opportunity to develop my own unique talents (unfettered by small-town thinking), and for continuously improving life on so many fronts, for so many animals.

World-class city indeed! To this day, every single time I see the CN Tower on the horizon, I think back to the young idealist that I was, so filled with ambition, so driven TO DO SOMETHING ... I wasn't sure what, exactly, (and sure as hell wasn't prepared for the trajectory my life took after Cyrilito came home and helped me "make the connection") ... but what a journey!

Today, I am one intensely grateful puppy. I can safely say that I owe MOST of my life-happiness to the City of Toronto "the meeting place"...

ANIMALS & RESCUERS IN NEED

OK... we are long-overdue for an ANIMAL RESCUE HOODIE RUN!
Back in 2007-8-9? I ordered a batch of "animal rescue hoodies" - in black and red. Sizes range from S-M-L-XL.

A note here:  most rescuers who bought hoodies swear to this day that their hoodies are the BEST investment they've made. Here's why: when I pull up to any animal rescue on any city street, that "rescue hoodie" gives me credibility...It tells people that I'm a "card carrying member" of the rescue community -- that I probably know (more of) what I'm doing than anyone else on the scene... and to please let me do what I need to do, to save this animal...

I'm doing a "hoodie rescue run" this season. If you are interested in purchasing one, or purchasing one as a gift for others in your circle, please email me at: [email protected]. Tell me your size and color preference. I'm placing the order at the end of October, and will coordinate sales and delivery during November, for December gift-giving.

Proceeds, obviously, go to the animals. But more important, wearing/sporting an animal rescue hoodie is a great way to message your community that you "mean business" when it comes to animals... that you are here to lend your animal expertise to a given rescue, and to take you seriously...

Please, send me your orders, now to end of November. Price point will be approximately $60 per, including taxes... Thanks Lawrence Pinsky and George Rowley, honestly...

COMMUNITY EVENTS

We're just a few weeks away from the Obama Foundation Summit in Chicago, and we're excited to share with you some of what we have in store. On October 31 and November 1, President and Mrs. Obama will welcome approximately 500 civic leaders from around the world for a two-day immersive event. During this inaugural Summit, young leaders will come together for a hands-on exchange of ideas that will inspire and empower participants with tools to create positive change in their communities.  You can participate in the Summit, too -- we'll be livestreaming! The Summit will feature five main stage sessions with talks on topics ranging from motivating young people to choose a civic path, to technology's role in creating equitable and inclusive communities. (Ed note: don't know about you, but I'm blocking off both days to participate in online live streaming ... I tried for a scholarship of sorts, to attend in person, but alas, wasn't chosen. I am really looking forward to hearing about ALL the new things the new generations are coming up with to improve the state of this planet.)

Early bird tickets for the Holistic Animal Care Conference Nov.11-12 end today! Register here, and shoot me an email if you're attending - would love to meet!

UPDATES ON RESCUES

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust welcomed a new baby boy elephant to the world. The baby's mom, Nasalot, was rescued back in 2000, and she welcomed her first baby recently, named Nusu.  Isn't he just precious? Check out the DSWT Facebook page, to read the story. For our darling Max, with the greatest love, mitch & cyril -- we could not have loved you more. I remember the weight of your paws, your smell, the thickness of your skull (as it collided with mine) and your fur... your beautiful bright eyes, your compelling voice, your enduring love for us...
