Message from our Pastor

This week will find me in Cuba, visiting with the Presbyterian Church in Placetas. Some of you will remember Xiomara who was with us in worship in September: we will be staying in her home. This is not a hammer and nails kind of mission trip, but more a pilgrimage where we allow ourselves to be ministered to by Christians who live in a very different political and economic system. We will worship with them on Sunday, accompany them as they go out to the little farming community of Copay to conduct a worship service, and visit in the homes of some of the older folk. They too think of the church as family, caring for one another in ways both practical and spiritual. Having made this trip many times over the last ten years, it has come to feel like family for us also. Please include them, and us in your prayers - myself, my husband John Potter, our son-in-law John McCormick, and Wendy Kunz from the Presbyterian Church in Woodbury, NJ.

Third Grade Bibles

Presenting Bibles during Worship to our third graders is a long-held tradition at Christ Our King.  This year, Bibles will be presented during the 11:00 am Worship Service on  October 22.  If you have a third grader and have not been contacted from someone in Christian Ed,  please contact the church office.

Annual Winter Coat Drive

Once again, Grace Presbyterian Church, pastored by Rev. Tanya Wade, will be distributing coats through their food pantry to those in need. Our coat drive began last week and will conclude on November 12.  The following items would be appreciated:

*   Coats, sweaters, and hooded sweatshirts in new or gently used condition (laundered or recently dry cleaned with zippers that work).

*    All sizes from newborn to plus size adult.

Look for collection containers in the Narthex and by the church office. If you have questions, please call Bonnie Ballard at 410-420-8373.  Thank you, in advance, for your support and contributions.

Nominating Committee - Request for Assistance

The Nominating Committee is requesting your prayers, thoughts, and assistance in identifying those people at Christ Our King who would like to do God's work in the capacity of Deacon or Elder.

Please contact the Church Office by phone or email ( [email protected]) to communicate to the Nominating Committee persons that you feel may be interested in serving Him in this manner. This could be a friend, family member, acquaintance, or yourself.  For more information on the duties of both Deacons and Elders, please contact the Church Office.

Deacons - As defined in the Book of Order - "The ministry of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of compassion, witness, and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor, the hungry, the sick, the lost, the friendless, the oppressed, those burdened by unjust policies or structures, or anyone in distress."  The Deacon's are structured to do ministry through the Deacon Family Ministry Plan in which each deacon is assigned several families to connect with throughout the year. The Deacons are charged with making sure that the needs of individuals in the congregation are met.

Elders - As defined in the Book of Order - "Together with the ministers of the Word and Sacrament, they exercise leadership, government, and discipline and individually and jointly, strengthen and nurture the faith and life of the congregation committed to their charge".  The Elders chair each of the various ministries of the church and act as the governing body of the church.

Elders meet on the second Tuesday each month.  Deacons meet the third Tuesday of each month.
Mom's Mornings

Held the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month at 10:00 am in the Library. Come join with Pastor Neta to share the joys  and frustrations of being a Mom. We will use "Finding Joy in All You Are" as our study guide. Our first meeting will be held on October 25.

Happy Hearts Luncheon

On October 11th, twenty Happy Hearts seniors met in the Genesis Room for a time of fellowship around the tables. A special tribute was given to the memory of Terri Johnson, who coordinated Christ Our King's ministry to our seniors for many years.  After a delicious lunch, a very information presentation about the recycling program in Harford County was given by Wendy Doring, Recycling Program Manager, Maryland Environmental Service.

Next Happy Hearts luncheon will be held in December.  Watch for the date.
Adult Sunday School
The Apostle Paul - The Man and his Message.
9/17 - 11/5
Facilitator: Sam Polack

This class will not meet this Sunday, October 8.

Please join us for our class entitled: The Apostle Paul - The Man and his Message. This class is based on the book The Call: The Life and Message of the Apostle Paul by Adam Hamilton. You do not need to purchase the book to participate in the class. The classes will be built around video segments in a DVD that accompanies the book. Each week there will be a very short overview of the chapter, some pre-video thoughts (things to think about while watching), viewing the video segment, and a handful or so of follow-up discussion questions focusing on the transfer of the content to our lives and where we in our personal journey. Each class will also have several passages from the bible shared as recommended by the Leader's Guide. Please bring your background experience and wisdom to add to our discussions.

A Chance for Your Voice to be Heard

Thank you to all who took the time to send me such thoughtful answers to these three questions (if you haven't had your say, there is still time) -

How would you describe Christ Our King to a first time visitor?

What are the 1-3 things that make our church unique?

What do you think should be the 3-5 goals for our congregation?
