Housing Continues to Progress, Still 'Room for Improvement' 
     
Housing markets in the U.S. overall continue to progress, supporting the best year in home sales in a decade, as indicated by Freddie Mac's Multi-Indicator Market Index® (MiMi) value, which stands at 86-a market on the "outer edge of its historic benchmark range of housing activity." The MiMi value, which has climbed back up 45 percent since its all-time low in 2010, is still trailing its high of 121.7.


Trump Names Quicken Loans Executive to HUD Transition Team
 
While speculation continues to surround President-Elect Donald Trump's nomination of Ben Carson to the post of Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) secretary, two more members of Trump's HUD transition team have been named: Shawn Krause, executive vice president of Government Advocacy for Quicken Loans, and Jimmy Kemp, son of former HUD Secretary Jack Kemp.

FHA 2017 Loan Limits
 
On Dec. 1, 2016, the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) released its 2017 Loan Limits. In high-cost areas the FHA national loan limit "ceiling" will increase to $636,150 from $625,500. The "ceiling is set at 150 percent of the national conforming limit of $424,100, which increased from $417,000 this year and was the first increase in the national conforming limit since 2006.


IRS Clarifies Debt Tax Relief
   
The Internal Revenue Service announced this week procedures designed to aid as many homeowners as possible who are facing the year-end expiration of a tax provision that excludes from income mortgage debt forgiven in connection with the Principal Reduction Modification Program (PRMP) and the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP).

What a Global Investor Expect in 2017
   
Interest of international capital entities for U.S. multifamily communities has been growing constantly, peaking at $150 billion in 2015, according to Blake Okland, vice chairman & head of U.S. multifamily at ARA Newmark. While the numbers for this year have not been added up, analysts are looking ahead to 2017. Predictions show even more interest from global investors towards residential assets on U.S. soil.
