Update from Executive Director

It could be a spouse, a child, a family member or friend of any age who needs a caregiver. More and more people have assumed active caregiver responsibilities.  Mill City Commons  sponsors a highly successful Caregivers' Support Group that meets twice a month. It is open to members and nonmembers alike. To read comments from current participants about their experience in the group, click here.

We are making plans to launch a second group in January.  The group will meet on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month in the afternoon, 1:30 - 3:00 pm. The cost for a 4-month session is $80. Mill City Commons member Susan Hartman will facilitate the group. Read Susan's professional bio here.
The group's maximum is 10.  If you'd like to register, or have questions, please email  Betsy Wray .

Last week's program presented by The Mapping Prejudice Project has prompted members to ask, "How can I help?" MPP is looking for volunteers to help determine if deeds have racial covenants. If you are interested in helping, go to www.mappingprejudice.org and click on Get Involved. Reading the deeds is straightforward, but a group tutorial for volunteers can be arranged. Please email  Mary Texidor if a tutorial is of interest to you.

Confused about Ranked Choice Voting? Abiitan  invites members to attend a presentation by Jeanne Massey of FairVoteMN this afternoon, from 3:00 - 4:00 pm, in Abiitan's Community Room, 428 S. 2nd Street. Read more and register here.

Rendezous Readers' Book Chat
Wednesday, November 1, 9:30 - 10:30 am
Abiitan's Porter Cafe, 428 2nd St S
Join us to discuss Louise Erdrich's LaRose, an emotionally haunting contemporary tale of a tragic accident, a demand for justice and a profound act of atonement with ancient roots in Native American culture. In late summer of 1999, Landreaux Iron stalks a deer along the edge of the property bordering his own. He shoots, but when the buck springs away, Landreaux realizes he's hit something else, a blur he saw as he squeezed the trigger. When he staggers closer, he realizes he has killed his neighbor's five-year-old son, Dusty Ravich. The youngest child of his friend and neighbor, Peter Ravich, Dusty was best friends with Landreaux's five-year-old son, LaRose. The two families have always been close, sharing food, clothing and rides into town; their children played together; and Landreaux's wife is half sister to Dusty's mother. Horrified at what he's done, the recovered alcoholic turns to an Ojibwe tribe tradition-the sweat lodge-for guidance, and finds a way forward. Following an ancient means of retribution, he and Emmaline will give LaRose to the grieving Peter and Nola. "Our son will be your son now," they tell them. The story that follows is a powerful exploration of loss, justice and the reparation of the human heart.

If you'd like to read ahead, December's book is Lab Girl by Hope Jahren. Have a book suggestion for the Book Chat? Email Barbara Goldner.

Health Care at the End of Life: A Physician's Perspective
Thursday, November 9, 7:00 - 8:30 pm
La Rive Community Room, 110 Bank St SE
In this second in an occasional series of MCC health care programs, MCC member Dr. David Plimpton will discuss health care directives. He'll review the content and goals of the health care directive and will provide suggestions for answering some of the difficult or confusing questions it includes such as, "What makes your life worth living?". He'll emphasize the importance of having a clear idea of one's values, beliefs and goals related to the end of life so they can be effectively communicated to one's health care agent and family members. A clearly written health care directive that has been openly discussed with your health care agent and family members greatly increases the chances that your end-of-life wishes will be followed.

The program format will be in the form of a conversation between nationally recognized dementia expert Jayne Clairmont, local owner of English Rose Suites and b·home Home Care and a leader on numerous state and national aging and dementia boards; and Bill Keane of Chicago, an aging consultant who has held leadership positions with many aging organizations and is a former national board member of the Alzheimer's Association, and who himself is now living with Parkinson's disease.
