National Healthy Skin Month

Your skin is your body's largest organ, so it's important to take good care of it. The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) has instituted November as Healthy Skin month to raise awareness of the importance of keeping skin fresh, hydrated and healthy throughout the entire year. During the entire month of November everyone is encouraged to learn about the functions of skin and how to keep it healthy. This is especially appropriate as November is the beginning of winter and the winter weather can be detrimental to the skin.

National Skin Month in November also provides knowledge on serious skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and skin cancer. It is recommended that everyone visit the dermatologist yearly for skin exams to check for suspicious moles and lesions that could lead to skin problems. Visit our website to learn what you should be looking for between your office visits. Learn More .
Dry Skin Care Tips

As Autumn and Winter bring cold air, they're also to blame for dry, itchy skin. Some people may suffer from dry skin all year and some may flare up in the cold months. Here are some things that can cause your dry, itchy skin to flare.

Winter - When the air outside is cold and dry, the water in your skin evaporates more quickly. This makes your skin feel dry and tight, and makes it look flaky.

AgeThe loss of oil glands as we age may also worsen dry skin. As we get older, our skin starts to lose its natural ability to stay hydrated.

Hot Shower - You might think that standing in a steamy shower would help hydrate your skin. But long showers, particularly in hot water, can actually have the opposite effect. Hot water mixed with cold, dry air can strip the skin of its natural protective barrier.

Harsh Soaps - Most soaps and body washes remove the oils that keep skin soft and naturally moisturized. Removing that oil makes your skin dryer.

T ips For Keeping Your Skin Hydrated

Apply body lotion, immediately after you shower or bath, to damp skin. Gently pat the skin dry with a cotton towel and immediately apply moisturizer. The lotion will effectively seal in all the water your skin has absorbed during the shower or bath.

For extremely dry skin, cleanse with an oil or lotion based washes. Remember to "bath smart", meaning don't use abrasive products like a loofa, which can irritate the skin and trap and spread bacteria.

Use a humidifier. Every little bit helps. Keeping the air around you humidified will keep your skin healthy, happy and hydrated.

Wear skin-friendly clothing. Cotton is gentle and lets the skin breath, where as wool can be itchy and irritating to the skin. Use laundry detergent that says "free and clear" this will help if you have a sensitivity to common chemicals found in laundry detergent.

Wear sunscreen and wide brimmed hats year-round.

Eat a Healthy Diet: Rich in Omega 3's, whole grains, B vitamins and proteins.

Don't' forget your lips: Carry a lip balm with SPF year-round summer & winter.

Keep your cool: Stress increases acne and wrinkles. Relax.

If you suffer from skin chronic conditions such as psoriasis, eczema or atopic dermatitis, talk to your provider, they may want to modify or add prescription medications to these recommendations.
Common Skin Conditions
Cold Sores/Fever Blisters

Cold sores are red, fluid-filled blisters that form near the mouth or on other areas of the face. In rare cases, cold sores may appear on the fingers, nose, or inside the mouth. They are usually clumped together in patches. Cold sores may persist for two weeks or longer.

A common virus called herpes simplex causes cold sores. They can spread from person to person through close contact, such as kissing. The sores are contagious even when they aren't visible.

There's no cure for cold sores, and they may return without warning. Certain medications can be used to treat cold sores and prevent them from coming back.

Grow Longer Lashes

Lose Your Turkey Neck Without Surgery

For many of us, developing a "turkey neck" is especially frustrating because it's very difficult, if not impossible to lose through diet or exercise. All that sagging neck skin can add years to a person's appearance.

In the past, a turkey wattle could only be treated with plastic surgery. We now have the ability to tighten the skin under your neck without surgery. New technologies have created numerous opportunities to deliver more refined, youthful necks and jawlines.

Before deciding upon any given procedure, patients should carefully consider all their options by talking to one of specially trained providers. To help you make the most informed decision, we've outlined a few of the more popular treatments.

Kybella - A non-surgical injectable for reducing moderate to severe fat below the chin, the area commonly known as a "double chin." The injection contains a naturally occurring substance in the body, deoxycholic acid, which helps the body absorb fat cells. When properly injected, Kybella destroys fat cells.

CoolSculpting - A fat-freezing procedure is the only FDA-cleared, non-surgical fat-reduction treatment that uses controlled cooling to eliminate stubborn fat that resists all efforts through diet and exercise. The results are proven, noticeable, and lasting-so you'll look great from every angle.
