Thank you to everyone who helped out at our Fall Outdoor Volunteer Clean-Up Day! Due to the many hands - 40 sets in all - under the expert direction of Judy Nickerson of the Mystic Garden Club and Kathy Weinberger of Terra Firma with oversight from Roger Richards, our Buildings & Grounds Committee Chair, the grounds were raked, clipped, mulched and weeded! We truly appreciate our helpful Mystic Community.
We have a new face at the MNL - please welcome Nat Rivkin (pictured), an aspiring author, Stonington native and recent graduate of Pomona College who is now helping at our service desks and with adult programming.
Hard to believe it - but this month we are celebrating Mito's one year anniversary here at the MNL. We are happy that our beloved rescue cat has found a forever home here @MNL. Be sure to stop by on Friday afternoon, November 10, as we celebrate our mighty Mito, the library cat!

Mito's Adoption Anniversary
Friday, November 10 during regular library hours
Come celebrate with us on
Friday, November 10! Our much-loved library cat, Mito, is a rescue cat from Focus on Ferals in Uncasville. He was found on Powerhouse Road and was given the name Mito - short for Mitochondria, the powerhouse of the cell!
In celebration of his one year adoption day anniversary, we will have cat crafts and activities set up in the Children' Room all day.
At 3:00p.m., we will share a story and sing
HAPPY ADOPTION DAY with a small cake for Mito. Then join us in the Ames Room to construct party hats, decorate cupcakes, and make cat garlands, pet rocks and bookmarks.
There will be fun, free activities for all ages. No registration required. Be sure to check out Mito's Instagram account under the name

The first ever Art Silent Auction is on now! Like the Fair Silent Auction, there are Bid books with a sheet for each piece. Bids are entered into the book and then raised by another person. Come see all the art up close at our reception on Saturday, November 4 from 1:00-2:30 p.m. and place your bids.
Bids close Saturday, November 18 at 3:00 p.m.
Winners will be notified the following week and arrangements will be made for pickup.

Exploring CT's Natural Wonders: A Slideshow for All Ages

An epic slideshow for all ages!
It isn't the kind of place we imagine when we think about natural wonders-but the fact is that Connecticut is a place where amazing discoveries about dinosaurs, geology and wild habitats have been made for centuries.
With intriguing slides, animations and video, this exciting program takes audiences on a tour of places that record where our region was flooded by vast flows of molten rock, where dinosaurs prowled immense lakes, where the last Ice Age left its marks-and the great variety of wild places we have to explore in our state today.
This program is free and open to the public; no registration is required.

Starry Night. This talk examines
Starry Night in the broad picture of larger artistic trends through the rise of Symbolism (1885-).

and visionary abstraction,
Starry Night moved from traditional community (village, starry heavens) to a uniquely modern artistic community, an urban audience of liberated individuals transformed into kindred spirits by art itself. Like the inscription chiseled on two slightly later art museums,
Starry Night goes beyond sublime nature in proclaiming: "

Groton-Mystic Emergency Services: Author Talk
Local Author Jim Streeter book talk and signing
Wednesday, November 15 at 7:00 p.m.
This book (co-authored with William Tischer) tells the story (in stunning images) of the eight separate fire districts of Groton & Mystic and the fire departments, police departments, ambulance associations, and paramedics who serve them.
All royalties from the book are donated to the Salvation Army's Emergency Disaster Services, earmarked for their mobile canteen operation.

Afternoon Wii U Gaming
Stop by the Mystic & Noank Library on Fridays from 3:30 to 5:00 pm for some fun among friends. Get your game on with other kids and teens! Join casual tournaments and game with your friends.
Gaming offers an outlet for creativity and problem solving, while the Library provides an atmosphere of community and sharing. Games are appropriate for ages 9 and up. Come join in on the fun!

This weekly club is for kids interested in learning fun and interactive Scratch programming! Participants will have the opportunity to create virtual games, music videos, art projects and more - all of their own digital design!

Winter Preschool Storytimes
Winter Storytimes begin the week of January 8, 2018.
Registration is available on via EventKeeper on the library website
now or by calling (860) 536-7721.
StoryTimes are scheduled to meet weekly Mondays through Thursdays, classes consist of stories, finger-plays, crafts, and songs.
Due to demand registration is required and class size is limited.
In the case of over-enrollment classes will be determined on a first-come, first-served basis.
StoryTime sessions last for eight weeks and are free and open to the public.

We are so pleased to have received a grant from the
Groton Education Foundation to start our own 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Program.
The program is available to all families with children
be
tween the ages of birth to 5 years old. The goal is to read 1000 books together prior to the child's start of formal schooling or Kindergarten.
Sound impossible? It's not!
Three books a day for one year is
over 1000 books!
Families commit to recording how many books they read together on a Reading Log (provided by the library). As the child reaches certain milestones (100 books, 200 books etc.), the child receives a small prize! We will also create a special bulletin board in the library to mark the progress of participants!
Reach 1000 books and the child takes home a special book of their own to keep! In addition, a book will be dedicated in the child's name for the library's collection.

Family Maker Day Photos
We had a great time showing our new 3D printers in action on Saturday, October 28! Roberta Donahue, Head of Youth Services, and John Persano (in green, below), a library volunteer and University of New Haven Adjunct Faculty member (Engineering), designed a range of hands-on and fun projects and activities. While the 3D printers churned out miniature jack-o-lanterns, guests used engineering skills to build things from toothpicks and mini marshmallows, designed catapaults and fashioned a pom pom drop.

The library is pleased to now provide access to BrainHQ - cutting-edge, research-based, brain training software.
Thanks to generous funding from the Mystic Rotary Club and the library's Kroeger Porter Fund provided by longtime library supporters Captain John D. Porter and his wife Mary Katherine (Kroeger) Porter, this important resource is available to cardholders of all three Groton Libraries - Mystic & Noank Library, Groton Public Library and Bill Memorial Library.

Lesson topics have included Windows 10, web design, Microsoft Office, and the use of devices such as Smartphones, iPads, e-readers and social media! New topics include employment websites, resumes and cover letters, web design, and more!
