PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE:
by Robert P. Granacher, Jr., M.D., MBA
What do Harvey Weinstein and Roy Price have in common?  Both have been discharged by their employers for predatory sexual harassment.  Harvey Weinstein was employed by the Weinstein Company (New York Times, October 2017 and New Yorker, October 2017), and Roy Price was the Amazon Studios Chief (New York Times, October 12, 2017).  Physicians are increasingly becoming employees of corporations, and therefore are subject to liability for alleged acts of sexual harassment.

The standard for employer liability for hostile work environment harassment, associated with sexual harassment, depends typically on whether or not the harasser is the victim's supervisor.  The Supreme Court gave guidance on what is a supervisor by a decision in Vance v. Ball State University (133 SCt 2434 (2013).  To read more CLICK HERE

Reflections
By: Nancy Swikert, MD, President, KMA 2016-17
If you get the chance to move up in Leadership in the Kentucky Medical Association, take it.  You will have the time of your life.  Serving the KMA members this past year was very rewarding.  It is amazing what good things are happening all over the state that most members never realize.  LMS has been especially busy this year.  Dr. Granacher and Dr. Tran have been in Washington, Frankfort and Lexington, advocating on behalf of Kentucky physicians to Kentucky legislators.  EVP, Chris Hickey and staff, have facilitated several key LMS meetings to aid physicians in career choices, Opioid issues, CME, and burnout prevention.  To Read More CLICK HERE

LMS Bourbon Chase Team Accomplishes Goal and More
By: Chris Hickey, LMS EVP/CEO
It's about 9:15 p.m. on a comfortable Friday night in Danville, Kentucky and the downtown is booming with night life and a party atmosphere. Music is blaring from concert-sized speakers and there are hundreds of festive people dressed not for a night on the town, but for night running operations. Former LMS President, Farhad Karim, MD, wearing his reflective vest and a head band with a white light in the front and red in the back, running down Main Street at a brisk pace and enters the chute to handoff the GPS tracking wrist band to Kenneth "Tad" Hughes, MD. The moment is met with cheering from the crowd as the Dr. Karim is handed a refreshing bottle of water while Dr. Hughes runs off into the darkness of the night. The team has completed 71.8 miles of the 203 mile relay race.
