Harvest Hoedown 2017
On September 30th, hundreds of folks gathered together at the Woodpecker Bar & Grill for the 3rd Annual Harvest Hoedown sponsored by CoVantage. They spent the afternoon celebrating fall and helping both NATH and the Rhinelander Area Food Pantry.

There were plenty of activities to keep both children and adults entertained. There was live music, line dancing, horse drawn wagon rides, face painting, apple games, a corn bin, an amazing Country Store, a large bake sale, beautiful baskets in the basket raffles and of course there was the delicious pig roasted up for us to enjoy.

This year, Rhinelander GM Auto Center, provided a truck for us to use for the first annual Fill the Truck. People were asked to bring a non perishable food or a personal essential item to place in the truck. The over 550 lbs of food and items were split between the two organizations.

We raised in excess of $12,000 which will be divided between NATH and the Rhinelanader Area Food Pantry.

We have already begun planning for the 4th Annual Harvest Hoedown which will be held on Saturday, September 22nd. Save the date to join us.

National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week
November 11-19, 2017

During the month of November, we are raising awareness about the under served in our community, those experiencing hunger and homelessness. In the Gospel of Mathew, we are told to put our faith into action.

I was hungry and you gave me food;
I was thirsty and you gave me drink;
I was a stranger and you took me in.
Now I tell you this: when you do these
things for the most neglected of mine
you do them to me.
Matt. 25:35, 40

Faces of NATH
by Susan Statezny
The story I am about to share, I share for two reasons. The first one is the simple fact that it is too funny to keep within the confines of the house. I can’t NOT share it. The other gives you a glimpse into the character of the man it is my privilege to write about.

I was quite glum when I arrived for work on October 15 thanks to Aaron Rodger’s potential season ending injury to his collarbone. Thanks to Jamie and the resident known as “Dan Dan the Handyman,” my dispirited mood was quashed by two words one wouldn’t expect to see in the same sentence. The words are keys and flushed. Yup. Jamie flushed the staff keys down the toilet. While I was trying to digest this information Dan went on to explain how he had his entire arm down the pipe that swallowed the keys. I laughed so hard my eyes began to water. I’m laughing right now.

Dan is one of the few residents who have come to stay at Frederick Place three times. While that is not exactly something to be proud of, I feel he made a decision he should be proud of. In my world I believe it takes more courage to ask for help, than it does to keep trudging down the same destructive path expecting a different result. Picking up the phone and asking to return for a third time attests to Dan’s unwillingness to permanently give in to the external forces that blocked his journey in recovery. That call meant that he was not ready to give up on himself and that he still felt he was worthy of happiness. Many alcoholics and addicts never come to the realization they are worthwhile people who deserve better than the existence they have been living. I am so very grateful Dan didn’t give up on himself. We all are.

Dan came to Frederick Place after graduating from treatment at Koinonia. I don’t know if something specifically happened while Dan was in treatment, or if he had just had enough of the little voice in his head lying to him and telling him things would be different this time.  Whatever the reason, the Dan who arrived last July is not the Dan we knew from his prior stints as a resident. Old Dan was sullen, kept to himself, and always remained guarded. New Dan is happy, talkative, friendly, determined, helpful, and funny as hell. He has embraced the adage, “The first thing you put before your sobriety is the second thing you will lose,” and is thriving in recovery. He joined Koinonia’s alumni group and was asked to run a weekly meeting. When Dan was interviewed for a job that would keep him out of town several days a week, the first thing he did was explain how important his program of recovery was to him and made it clear he planned on keeping it that way.

Dan has been a tremendous help while with us. The flushed keys incident is but one example of the many things he did around Frederick Place without complaint. We all seemed to go to him when a toilet wouldn’t flush, when an outdoor floodlight burned out, or when the kitchen door handle decided to be finicky and wouldn’t allow our key to enter it. He helped paint inside and out, replaced ceiling tiles that were damaged in the Gathering Room flood of 2017, and he provided a boost to a staff member when (hypothetically speaking) the keys got locked in the office. His handyman position will never be filled by someone as competent.

Life for Dan wasn’t all rainbows and unicorns, though. Jobs fell through, landlords turned him down, and he didn’t get paid for several weeks of work. Old Dan would have complained effusively about what others were doing to him as he drank another libation. The Dan of today accepts things as they are and doesn’t have to drink to cope with the negative events. To drink would eventually ruin the hard won sobriety and happiness that are priceless to him today. That little voice telling him he could drink for just one night has been silenced. He has hope, and hope is a vital part of recovery.

While we appreciated every little thing Dan did, the tasks can’t compare to the laughter and tangible joy he brought to staff and residents alike. His genuine belly laugh alone made others respond in kind. The house seems so silent now. I miss that laugh that made me forget the bad events and be grateful for the life I have. I wish I had words to convey the profound transformation I saw in Dan. It is an absolute honor watching this man, who is real as real ever was, take one leap of faith after another as he continues working on a dream of the promised l and.
