New Frontiers in Operations

Students, faculty, and industry leaders gathered at the Ross School of Business for the 2016 Global Operations Conference, "New Frontiers in Operations."

Dr. Somesh Nigam, IBM VP of Information & Data Governance and Health Informatics, kicked off the GOC with a visionary keynote on the ramifications of the rise of data as the "new currency" of business. Operations VP Jonathan Czaja examined how Stitch Fix's blend of art, science, and service influences the evolution of its operations in the shifting world of online retail.  And Dow Global Supply Chain Visibility Leader Jeff Tazelaar concluded the GOC with a discussion of how the Internet of Things is transforming supply chain management.

In addition to the keynote addresses and the annual case competition, faculty from the Ross School of Business and the School of Information moderated panel discussions on 'Globalization through Operations,' 'Evolution of Operations in Healthcare,' and 'Big Data and Predictive Analysis,' offering insights from leaders at companies such as Amazon, PwC, Cardinal Health, Henry Ford Health, the Mayo Clinic, Boeing, General Mills, Whirlpool, and Verizon Wireless. Tauber was pleased to host alumni at the GOC as both panelists and participants, including Kunal Vora (MSCM '13), Juan Lopez (MBA '09), Benjamin Ranta (MBA '15), and Ted Hanawalt (MSE '01).

Tauber solutions:
More product, same resources

The Challenge: Apply lean methodology to accommodate ever-increasing demand for crucial medical equipment at Fresenius Medical Care.

The Solution: The Tauber Team of Matt Riley (EGL BSE-ChE/MSE-IOE '17) and Katie Redman (MBA '17) found significant opportunity to rebalance the hemodialysis assembly line and reduce waiting time by 60%.  The team trained assemblers and identified a five-year floor plan strategy to achieve ideal productivity.
