November is here again and the cooler days of fall make for perfect reading weather. Below we have some timely new books in honor of Remembrance Day . These books remind us of how thankful we are to all the men and women who have served and continue to serve our country both at home and abroad.

Christmas is just around the corner and here at the bookstore we are excited to share all the events we have planned for the next month, wonderful new titles, and so much more!

*Fight to the Finish* by Tim Cook

Historian Tim Cook displays his trademark storytelling ability in the second volume of his masterful account of Canadians in World War II. Cook combines an extraordinary grasp of military strategy with a deep empathy for the soldiers on the ground, at sea and in the air. Whether it's a minute-by-minute account of a gruelling artillery battle, vicious infighting among generals, the scene inside a medical unit, or the small details of a soldier's daily life, Cook creates an utterly compelling narrative. He recounts in mesmerizing detail how the Canadian forces figured in the Allied bombing of Germany, the D-Day landing at Juno beach, the taking of Caen, and the drive south.


*By Chance Alone* by Max Eisen

Tibor "Max" Eisen was born in Moldava, Czechoslovakia into an Orthodox Jewish family. In the spring of 1944, gendarmes forcibly removed Eisen and his family from their home. They were brought to a brickyard and eventually loaded onto crowded cattle cars bound for Auschwitz-Birkenau. At fifteen years of age, Eisen survived the selection process and he was inducted into the camp as a slave labourer.

One day, Eisen received a terrible blow from an SS guard. Severely injured, he was dumped at the hospital where a Polish political prisoner saved Eisen from certain death in the gas chambers by giving him a job as a cleaner in the operating room. After his liberation and new trials in Communist Czechoslovakia, Eisen immigrated to Canada in 1949, where he has dedicated the last twenty-two years of his life to educating others about the Holocaust across Canada and around the world.


*A Bold and Dangerous Family* by Caroline Moorehead

Italy's Rosselli family were members of the cosmopolitan, cultural elite in Florence at the start of the 20th century. Led by their fierce matriarch, Amelia Rosselli, they were also vocal anti-fascists. As Mussolini rose to power in Italy following WWI, the Rossellis took leading roles in the rebellion against him, a stance that few in their class would risk. And when Mussolini established a police state whose tactics grew more brutal, the Rossellis and their anti-fascist friends transformed from debaters and critics into activists. Through the stories of these brave people and their friends, renowned historian Caroline Moorehead delivers an immersive picture of Italy in the first half of the 20th century.


*Firing Lines:* Three Canadian Women Write the First World War by Debbie Marshall

Europe: 1914-18. Mary MacLeod Moore, a writer for Saturday Night Magazine, covered the war's impact on women, from the munitions factories to the kitchens of London's tenements. Beatrice Nasmyth, a writer for the Vancouver Province, managed the successful wartime political campaign of Canadian Roberta MacAdams and attended the Versailles Peace Conference as Premier Arthur Sifton's press secretary. Elizabeth Montizambert was in France during the war and witnessed the suffering of its people first-hand. She was often near the fighting, serving as a canteen worker and writing about her experiences for the Montreal Gazette.

Dead in the Dark by Stephen Booth TOM'S PICK

"The is book number 17 in the series featuring Cooper and Fry, but is the the first one that I have read. The setting is in the Peak District in England, featuring two former detective partners striving to solve crimes of the day. The major strength of the story is great research, both historical and geological, that Booth has framed his story with. The other aspect that I liked was that in the context of the story, Booth examines changes in British Society, from miner's strikes to Polish immigration and Brexit. This is a good read with lots of depth to it. "


Caroline: Little House, Revisited by Sarah Miller MARIANNE'S PICK

Sarah Miller vividly recreates the beauty, hardship, and joys of the frontier in a dazzling work of historical fiction, a captivating story that illuminates one courageous, resilient, and loving pioneer woman as never before - Caroline Ingalls, "Ma" in Laura Ingalls Wilder's beloved Little House books.
