With the help of thousands of dominoes, the Muma College of Business launched the holiday season with a video that has it all. Cheers, joy and a little suspense filled the atrium, as Dean Moez Limayem pushed over the first tile in an elaborate domino tumbling event that thrilled students, faculty and staff. SNACK FOOD EXECUTIVE RICH MARTINO TALKS TO MBA CLASS

Rich Martino still carries the swagger of a kid growing up in the Bronx, though it has softened a bit by a move to Florida with his family three decades ago. He graduated from USF with a business degree in 1984.  This month, he returned to USF to give a candid talk about his career and his current job with Mondelēz   International perhaps the largest snack-food company on the planet.    Learn More
CAPS AND GOWNS WERE THE FASHION STATEMENT THIS WEEKEND  
Undergraduates and graduate students were recognized at commencement ceremonies over the weekend at the USF Sun Dome. The Muma College of Business recognized five King O' Neal scholars, graduating with a 4.0 GPA. They are Lauren Alford, Aaron Braley, Shane Cataract, Brooks Lackmann and Romero Corazon Marmanillo 
ACCOUNTING FIRM DONATES FUNDS FOR TEACHING FELLOWSHIP
CBIZ MHM, a Top 10 accounting and professional business services provider, has given a gift to the University of South Florida's Muma College of Business that will keep on giving for years to come.  The firm, which has more than 4,000 associates in 33 states, has contributed enough to pay for a five-year teaching fellowship in the Lynn Pippenger School of Accountancy.   Learn More
RESEARCH SHOWS MORE GOES INTO A TIP THAN JUST SERVICE
Tipping in restaurants always has been a cause for discussion. Fifteen, 20 percent or higher? What if the service was bad? Should tipping depend on just the friendly service? An article co-authored by a USF prof says the  billfold that holds the tabl may have more to do with the gratuity you leave than you ever realized.
PROFESSIONAL SELLING: MUCH MORE THAN PUSHING PRODUCTS
Selling is the stuff of Carol Osborne's marketing class and she uses a "Shark Tank" team of student inquisitors posing as investors to poke holes in the pitches and rattle the pitchers.
Marketing classes typically teach students how to pitch products, but this one goes beyond textbooks and regurgitating proven methods. Osborne takes a page out of popular culture to get her lesson objectives across.

FORMER WAL-MART CEO MIKE DUKE POPS IN ON BUSINESS CLASS
A classroom of business research students this week were treated to a special guest: Michael Duke, who, before retiring two years ago, ran the worldwide operations of Wal-Mart.   As the students presented their research to the rest of the class, Duke walked in with Muma College of Business Dean Moez Limayem and then spoke about what life was like in the fast lanes of the worldwide retail giant.   Learn More
BIG DATA DAY DRAWS HUNDREDS OF HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS 
Busloads of students from nine Hillsborough County high schools spilled onto campus this week to participate in the Muma College of Business Big Data Days.   The students, deemed the best and brightest in their computer science and technology classes, spent half the day touring the campus and participating in exercises and discussing aspects of various computer-based professions.   Learn More
ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: CARL LUM OVERSEES SEAWORLD IN TEXAS 
As a child in Tampa, Carl Lum grew up visiting the city's landmark theme park, Busch Gardens. Now he is the president of SeaWorld San Antonio in Texas, where every day he walks into one of the world's largest marine life park.   The USF grad and Life Member of the Alumni Association said the park is like a small city and he oversees duties ranging from making sure guests are happy to garbage collection.   Learn More

  • Robert J. Batz ('96, Accounting) has been appointed co-attest practice leader for Mayer Hoffman McCann P.C.'s Tampa Bay office. He was previously a managing director for CBIZ MHM.
  • Ken Burke ('95, Accounting) received the National Association of Counties' 2016 Achievement Award for his "Same Day Juror Pay Mobile Workstations" initiative. Burke is the Pinellas County Clerk of the Circuit Court and comptroller.
  • Scott Holden ('84, Finance) has been appointed area president of Arthur J. Gallagher & Co. in Tampa. He has more than 30 years' industry experience, focusing on the technology, broadcasting, social service, and education industries. He has been with the company for 17 years.
  • Heather Meglino ('08, Marketing) has founded and is managing partner of Meglino Morse Law in Orlando. The firm practices business, employment, and family law.
 
FACULTY/STAFF NOTES
  • Heather Lively was awarded the CBIZ MHM Teaching Fellowship. She is an instructor in the Lynn Pippenger School of Accountancy, teaching financial accounting and audit courses. She has several years' experience as an auditor in Tampa and is only in her second year on the faculty.
  • Tom Smith received the Advisory Council Outstanding Teaching Award at the Beta Alpha Psi banquet on Dec. 2. He is an assistant professor in the Lynn Pippenger School of Accountancy, teaching intermediate financial accounting. Smith's research has focused on banking, auditing, and executive compensation and has had work published in numerous accountancy journals. 
  • Jung Chul Park was named a Global Faculty Fellow for the spring semester by the university's Global Citizens Project. As part of the spring 2017 Global Faculty Fellows cohort, he will work with the GCP professional development specialists on enhancing his selected course, FIN 3604 International Finance, and preparing a GCP course certification proposal.

* Jan. 14, 8 a.m. -8 p.m., Join Jabil and the University of South Florida's Muma College of Business for a special Hackathon event that emphasizes the role of IT in manufacturing. Jabil is partnering with USF to challenge students to design and create sustainable software that breaks the barriers in technology, making a global impact. The event takes place at the Muma College of Business.

* Mar. 8, 6:15 p.m. , Celebration of Free Enterprise Honoring Sheila C. Johnson , The Celebration of Free Enterprise brings together 400 business, government and community leaders to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the free enterprise system - and to raise funds for student success initiatives.  A celebration in every sense of the word, this not-to-be missed event is fun and always includes special entertainment.
