COUNTY ISSUES WATER ADVISORY FOR SHARPSBURG RESIDENTS
Washington County conducting routine maintenance on water treatment plant

HAGERSTOWN, MD. (October 30, 2017) - The Washington County Department of Water Quality announces a precautionary boil water advisory to customers served water by the Sharpsburg Water Treatment Plant.
Routine scheduled maintenance performed at the plant to clean and replace filter media has the potential to influence the quality of water provided to customers from Tuesday, October 31 through Friday November 3, 2017. This is routine maintenance and is being conducted under the guidance of the Maryland Department of the Environment following American Water Works Association standard procedures. This advisory is precautionary in nature and no change in water quality is anticipated.

It is recommended that customers boil all water used for cooking, teeth brushing, ice and drinking until further notice. Customers are advised to bring the water to a rolling boil for at least one minute, which is sufficient to ensure the water is safe to use for consumption. After boiling, please remember to let the water cool before use. Ice that has been made recently should not be consumed or used for drinking. The water may be used for bathing and washing without boiling.

The County Water Quality Department will monitor the water system during this process and will revise this advisory as necessary. The advisory is a precautionary measure and will be lifted after the maintenance is complete and water quality tests verify the safety of the water supply. This process may take four days. An update will be provided as early as Wednesday, November 1. As always, customers are asked to conserve as much water as possible during this time.

For more information, residents should call the Washington County Water Quality office at 240-313-2600, and the Washington County Environmental Health Department at 301-791-3270.
