A Note from Dean Cavalieri

The 'story behind the story' of this month's eNews helps reveal why SOM is such a special place. This month, current and former SOM students and faculty were featured at the national AOA conference, achieved significant academic appointments, lectured on the need to address health disparities and volunteered to raise funds to help end those disparities.

In the space here, we could not possibly tell all the stories of everyone at SOM who works tirelessly to help others. Please know, however, that I sincerely appreciate your efforts to make this world a better place for our patients, students, colleagues and for the less fortunate in our surrounding communities.

My best,

Thomas A. Cavalieri, DO, MACOI, FACP
Dean

SOM Represents at AOA OMED in Philadelphia

This year's Osteopathic Medical Conference and Exposition (OMED) of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) was in SOM's backyard, just across the river in Philadelphia. Due to the close proximity, many SOM faculty, staff, students and alumni attended all or part of the conference October 7 to 10, participating in various lectures and workshops to earn continuing medical education credits, as well as to network with other physicians and health care professionals.

SOM debuted a new display at our exhibit booth, where we offered information about admissions, graduate medical education and alumni and student affairs to attendees. A record number of alumni, faculty, staff and students attended the Dean's Reception on October 9 at the Hard Rock Café, and enjoyed a post-dinner trolley tour of Philadelphia's historic sites.

Dr. Alison Mancuso Named Vice Chair, Family Medicine

Dr. Alison Mancuso has been named Vice Chair of the Department of Family Medicine. A graduate of SOM, Dr. Mancuso served as Chief Resident in the Family Medicine Residency Program. Upon graduation, she joined the department as a faculty member. In 2012, Dr. Mancuso was named Medical Director of the Sewell office, and helped lead the Family Medicine Residency Program. She has lectured nationally on clinical and business-related medical topics, and is a Fellow with the American College of Osteopathic Physicians. Dr. Mancuso's leadership helped the department achieve Level 3 PCMH Accreditation for all four Family Medicine clinical offices, as well as an initial ACGME accreditation for the residency program. In her new role as Vice Chair, Dr. Mancuso will continue to support the 85 faculty, staff and residents of the Department of Family Medicine, while supporting SOM's clinical, academic and research missions.

Visiting Professor Lecture Focuses on Complementary and Alternative Medicine

Special guest lecturer and 2005 SOM graduate, Dr. Sajid Surve, returned to campus on October 10 to present "Complementary and Alternative Medicine" to students, faculty and staff. Dr. Surve is an associate professor at UNTHSC Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, and currently serves as co-director at the Texas Center for Performing Arts Health. Dr. Surve is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine and Pain Medicine, and has a Medical Acupuncture certification. He often lectures at the local, regional and national levels on various topics, including osteopathic manipulative medicine, medical acupuncture, complementary and alternative therapies, responsible opioid prescribing and performing arts medicine.

Dr. Magdala Cherry Lectures at Community Grand Rounds

Dean Cavalieri and the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) welcomed Assistant Professor and SOM alumna Dr. Magdala Chery '14, to the first Community Grand Rounds lecture of the academic year. Dr. Chery presented, "Beyond Medicine: Our Social Responsibility to be Civic Minded Physicians." Community Grand Rounds lectures focus on addressing health care dilemmas and disparities in underserved communities, as well as recommend possible solutions. The event is a joint effort of the SNMA and the Office of the Dean.

SOM Represents at 10th Annual Fall Festival

SOM students and staff were on hand to support Stratford Borough's largest community event, the Fall Festival, on Saturday, October 28. Festivalgoers had the opportunity to learn more about the school and the clinical services available through Rowan Medicine. SOM students were well represented that day, providing wellness tips, body fat screenings and blood pressure checks along with hands-on science activities for children.

FITDocs Present Third Annual 'Commit to Fit' 5K

Over 50 runners and other volunteers and supporters gathered at the Rowan University's main campus on October 21 for the third annual FITDocs 'Commit to Fit' 5K. The run raised nearly $3,000, which will directly support Urban Promise's community garden and the organization's goal of providing fresh produce to Camden residents. FITDocs president Alexandra Nutaitis '20 first learned about the 'food desert' that is Camden during her community service during Orientation. Camden has more than 80,000 residents, but only one supermarket, leaving families to rely on one of 25 corner stores as their primary source of groceries. The result is often a diet with little to no fresh produce, increasing the likelihood of illness and malnutrition.

ZUMBAthon Raises Funds for Local and National Charities

FITDocs, the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) and the Office of Student Affairs & Alumni Engagement hosted a ZUMBAthon event on October 12. Students, staff and faculty enjoyed various ZUMBA sessions, lunch and downtime during this event. Event proceeds benefited Urban Promise and the National Foundation for Breast Cancer.

Pumpkin Palooza!

The Dermatology Interest Group and Office of Student Affairs & Alumni Engagement hosted wellness and relaxation activities for students on Tuesday, October 24. Students participated in art therapy - Pumpkin Palooza-style - and entered their painted pumpkins in a contest to earn house points.
