Collaboration!!
From our earliest days, we are taught to play nice, share, use the buddy system and hold hands while crossing the street. These are the most basic ideas of collaboration. These are the ways we grow, learn and keep ourselves safe. Consider that everyone you will meet knows something you don't. By working together as a team, great accomplishments are attainable. Like the saying, "Alone we are smart, together we are brilliant." Collaboration creates community, community inspires social change.
Collaboration is something that I have admired within our community; entities conferring with each other and cooperating to figure out the best end result. There have been several examples of successful events this last year and there will be several more in the next.
The Chamber of Commerce strives to collaborate as much as possible and keeps the lines of communication open with other area Chambers, the administration of the City, and other community organizations. No one is here because they did it on their own.
Collaboration breeds success. Collaboration is the way things get done.

If you take a walk about town this fall, you'll see some nice improvements -improvements that are designed to make your walk about more enjoyable.
Capitol Avenue is the centerpiece of the enhancements. Although the rebuild of Capitol Avenue received most of the attention this summer, the street wasn't just improved for motorists. Pedestrians will also enjoy new and improved crosswalks. We added high-visibility red paint to the crosswalks in front of the Capitol Building. Additionally, those crosswalks were widened, brought into compliance with ADA regulations, and made more visible by other surrounding safety features.
Thanks to a partnership with the State of South Dakota and the Trail of Governors Foundation, Capitol Avenue also received an aesthetic boost this fall. Life-size statues of Governors Joe Foss, Sigurd Anderson and Leslie Jensen now adorn the sidewalk on the south side of Capitol Avenue.
If you follow the Trail of Governors all the way downtown, you'll notice new high-visibility crosswalks along Sioux Avenue, and you'll find yet another Governor standing on the corner. A statue of Governor Tom Berry was placed at the corner of Pierre Street and Dakota Avenue in late September.
You can expect continued efforts to improve the walking experience in Pierre. The Trail of Governors will add three more life-size statues to its trail next year, and the city has plans to make major improvements to the riverfront walking trail near Downs Marina and to the trail just west of the causeway.
I encourage you to take a walk and take in all the recent improvements that have been made throughout Pierre.

Fort Pierre Mayor Gloria Hanson's Report
One of our final Bicentennial events was held on Friday, October 6. "South Dakota Warrior," a short documentary of the story of Lt. Commander John Waldron, premiered in Fort Pierre at the Pat Duffy Community Center. The film was produced by Pierre native John Mollison.
As many people have heard me say, I grew up in Fort Pierre and had never heard of this local hero until the Missouri River bridge was named for him. I hope this documentary will forever change that, so that John Waldron will become a household word and his selfless patriotism and sacrifice will become a well-known story.
Waldron, part Lakota Sioux, was born on Bad River southwest of Fort Pierre. He graduated from the Naval Academy and from law school, and served in the Navy as a pilot during World War II. Although Waldron and 28 of his 29 men died in the attack, his heroic actions as a torpedo bomber squadron leader changed the course of the Battle of Midway Island and shortened World War II.
To tell the story, Mollison interviewed Francis White Bird, himself a decorated Veteran of the Viet Nam War, to get a sense of what it means to be a Lakota warrior. He also tapped the knowledge of noted naval aviation historian Barrett Tillman to understand the significance of Waldron's actions. The film includes historic video of Waldron and his squadron just before they left on their mission to Midway Island, as well as aerial footage taken by Mollison and his crew in vintage WW II airplanes.
Approximately 170 people attended the Fort Pierre premiere, which was the first public showing of the film. It also premiered at the Air and Space Museum at Ellsworth Air Force Base the following day. It will be shown statewide on SD Public Broadcasting on November 6th and will be available online on-demand Vimeo.
Area residents may remember Dr. David West, a Sioux Falls ophthalmologist, from the Waldron memorial dedication at the Pierre airport in June of 2016, which included a flyover of six WW II warbirds. Dr. West is an avid military history fan and is a prime sponsor of "South Dakota Warrior." Other supporters are: the SD Community Foundation, Sanford Health, the Ellsworth Heritage Foundation, Monsour Karim, the Fort Pierre Tourism & Promotion Council, Black Hills Federal Credit Union, First National Bank in Fort Pierre, and Dakota Prairie Bank.
The film has already attracted the attention of several film festivals and has been nominated for awards in the documentary category. You don't want to miss it!

PEDCO - Notice of Annual Meeting
All PEDCO members are invited to attend the Board of Directors Annual Meeting from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2017, at Richie Z'S Brickhouse BBQ & Grill, 401 S. Central Avenue.
The main purpose of the annual meeting is to elect nominees to the board of directors. A nominating committee will develop the slate of nominees. Members interested in consideration by the nominating committee may contact PEDCO at

Following the annual meeting activities, members will be able to participate in a Build Dakota/Technical Institute Roadshow. Retail Briefs
The consumer perception of the economy is strong, at a 13-year high, the jobless rate is low and consumers are ready to shop. If retailers fail to hit marks this holiday season, it will not be due to lack of consumer interest or ability to buy. Bloomberg Gadfly (10/17)
The National Retail Federation and other trade groups are backing efforts to modernize the North American Free Trade Agreement to meet the needs of today's global supply chains, but they are concerned that some US proposals will do more harm than good, writes NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay. "[A] flawed NAFTA modernization could significantly impact US consumers by increasing prices and limiting the choice and availability of products ranging from apparel and electronics to fresh fruits and vegetables," he writes. US retail sales rose 1.6% in September from the previous month, the biggest monthly jump since March 2015, as spending grew in several segments including home improvement, grocery and non-store retail, according to a Commerce Department report. Sales at bars and restaurants grew 0.8%, the largest increase since January. Reuters (10/13)
The belief that brick-and-mortar retail stores are in crisis is exaggerated, spurred on by myths that all retailers are suffering or that traditional and e-commerce retail are separate entities. The reality is that 85% of retail sales happen in stores and that physical and e-commerce actually work in tandem. ABC News (10/12)
Grocers including Wegmans Food Markets, Kroger and Whole Foods Market are increasingly looking to shopping malls as locations for new stores. Malls meet grocery shoppers' demands for convenience and one-stop shopping, but grocers should be ready to tackle challenges that come with mall stores, including crowds and large parking lots that could require shoppers to carry their groceries long distances, according to Paul Milner, marketing director for electronic shelf labeling firm Displaydata. Walmart cut about $20 million in annual costs by making little changes to its plastic shopping bags and trimmed another $7 million by shortening the length of its paper receipts, said Chief Financial Officer Brett Biggs. The retailer also expects costs to come down on the e-commerce side after several years of significant investment to grow online retail. CNBC (10/11)
Houses of worship are joining the ranks of tenants in some struggling US shopping malls seeking to shore up their occupancy rates. While churches are not ideal tenants -- they do not draw traffic during the week and can be hard to evict -- they do have the advantage of turning a center into a mixed-use product. The Wall Street Journal (10/10)
Strip retail centers with less than 100,000 square feet of space offer a healthy mix of tenants, many of which are e-commerce resistant, executives from CBRE said. They provide convenience, food and service-oriented businesses and tend to include features such as drive-thru windows, outparcels and long-term leases. Bisnow (10/8)
The National Retail Federation expects as much as a 4% increase in holiday retail sales in November and December owing to improved consumer confidence, increasing wages and low unemployment. Retailers are making changes to compete with pure-play online rivals, according to an international survey of 256 retail executives by Applied Predictive Technologies. The Colors of Christmas is the theme for the 2017 Christmas at the Capitol. Thousands of people travel to Pierre to enjoy the beautifully decorated trees. The trees are decorated by schools, churches, communities and civic groups from across the state. The lighting ceremony is November 21st. This is the official start of the viewing of the trees. The display will be open to the public from November 22nd thru December 26th, 8am - 10pm (CST) each day.
The two-story South Dakota tree featured in the Capitol rotunda will be decorated by the town of Fort Pierre. The decorations will commemorate the Bicentennial. Many other parts of the Capitol will be decorated in addition to the trees including the grand marble staircase, entrance ways and the Capitol grounds.
On many evenings and weekends, musical artists will perform at the Capitol. Pierre offers other excellent entertainment opportunities during the Christmas holidays. If you have an event and would like to let the public know about it, go to our website www.pierre.org and get your event on the calendar. This website is an excellent resource for events going on in the community.
As you can see by the color orange, this issue of the newsletter is still full of news about Rooster Rush. Many events were held to commemorate pheasant hunting in Pierre. We do appreciate the cooperation of all the businesses participating.

The word thankful has always been more of a feeling to me than a word, so when I googled the definition it made me laugh out loud. Pleased and relieved ARE the feelings I have working at the chamber. I get to work with a group of volunteers who are my ambassadors, they have full time jobs, but are always willing to help whenever asked. The ambassadors come to the ribbon cuttings, business after hours, and help deliver the membership plaques at the beginning of a new year! More importantly, they are a group of people who understand the importance of the chamber and encourage businesses and individuals to get involved with both the chamber, and our community. And of course, thank you to all of our members who continue to invest, and for allowing me the opportunity to show you the value of your membership! We have had a great 2017 and 2018 is only going to get better!
The best part of my job is getting to work with the great staff at the Pierre Area Chamber, as well as United Way, and PEDCO who are also housed within the same building. In addition, I have to say thank you to my family and friends who help get things done too... volunteering, setting up, tearing down - whatever it is you step up and help get it done!
Business After Hours will be hosted by Shoe Sensation in the Northridge Plaza on November 2nd, from 5-6:30! I encourage EVERYONE to attend, these events are open to the public, the store will be open, and I am told there will be some excellent door prizes and discounts on shoes during this event! The progressive drawing is up to $700, every chamber member is automatically in the drawing, but you must be present to win! Hope to see you all there!

Chamber Board Nominations Announced
The Pierre Area Chamber of Commerce's nominating committee is offering a slate of candidates for 2018.
The proposed 2018 Executive Board will consist of President Bryan Beck (Beck Motor Company), President-Elect Jennifer Anderson (Anderson, Nil & Associates), Vice President John Hight (Cherokee Enterprises), Secretary Steve Bass (Edgewood Senior Living Center), Treasurer Meredith Lee (Lee Real Estate) and Past President Melissa Puepke (First Dakota National Bank).
Nominations for the three-year terms include: Angie Bollweg (Sanford Clinic Pierre), Russ Hoffert (Feeding South Dakota) and Kristie Maher (South Dakota Discovery Center).
Incoming president Bryan Beck will appoint Mike Kannas (Menards), Kim Larson (Farm Credit Services of America) and Dan Park (Bankwest) to each serve a one-year term.
Any additional chamber member in good standing who is interested in submitting his or her name for consideration for a position on the Chamber Board of Directors can do so by circulating a petition and obtaining signatures from one-third of the chamber membership. Such petitions shall be forwarded to the nominating committee no later than November 14, 2017. His or her name will be added to the ballot and sent out to all eligible voters prior to the Annual Celebration. The nominees receiving the majority of the votes shall be declared elected to the Board of Directors. Should a tie occur, the nominating committee shall cast the deciding vote. In the event no other chamber member submits his or her name, the nominated slate will become the 2018 chamber board.
Newly elected and appointed board members shall be seated at the December board meeting and shall be considered participating members until their term ends.
