Happy Halloween from Child's Voice!
We had a great day celebrating Halloween. This is such a fun (and language-rich) holiday, our students always enjoy getting dressed up and sharing in the fun!  Here are a few photos from our fun day! Special thanks to Child's Voice neighbors WITS (Wintrust IT Solutions) for welcoming our trick-or-treaters!

Early Intervention Program Update
In Chicago, our toddler group has been learning about fall vocabulary including leaves, pumpkins, ghosts, and rakes. The parents have been practicing using good positioning to make sure their child has the best access to sound as possible. This means staying close to their child (within 6 inches if possible) and talking on the better hearing side when a child has unilateral hearing loss. See attached pictures!

In Wood Dale, four  families attended our Baby Voices group on Oct. 16th. We talked about using parallel talk as a listening and spoken language strategy, hearing aid retention, and how often families receive EI services. The group plans to meet two times per month for one hour over the next year. They hope to add more families to Baby Voices as the year continues.

In addition, we are implementing our "Growing Voices" grant program with both Toddler group and Home based families.

Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Act
President Trump signed the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Act of 2017 into law, which will fund continued research and improve program development for early hearing detection and intervention in newborns and young children with hearing loss for the next five years.  To read the full article from the Alexander Graham Bell Association, please click here

Lovin' Literacy - Developing a Love of Reading
Are you asking the right questions when reading with your child?  Good readers are active readers.  As you move from 'learning to read' into 'reading to learn', to make sure you understand the meaning of the text. It is important to ask questions before, during, and after reading.  For a list of some examples of questions you can ask in order to think critically about a story, please  click here.

Try these questions out at home and make sure to adjust them to your child's individual language level.  Just a reminder, our school-wide reading program "BOOK IT" is in full swing!  Make sure to track your minutes on your calendar and turn it in on November 1st.  Your child has a chance to be the Star Reader of the month if they read the most minutes!

Audiology Update
The Chicago Hearing Society offers assistance with hearing aid batteries.  If you are interested in more information on the program, please complete the Request Form and return it to Chicago Hearing Society.  Please note, a copy of your child's Medicaid card and audiogram are required.  Please list your child's teacher under Hearing Itinerant Teacher.  If you need assistance, please contact Dr. Megan Wernsman, Pediatric Audiologist, at 630-595-8200, x 1331 or Marianne Benedek, Child's Voice Social Worker, at 630-595-8200, x 1131.

Mainstream Update
Have you ever sat in an IEP meeting and heard a member of the team say, "We took the liberty of filling out a "draft" IEP, please sign here."  How did you respond?  Do you know how to respond?  Click here to read more about possible ways to navigate the situation from Illinois Hands & Voices.
