Caretaker's New Abode
Just in time for winter
With the help of some good  friends, Debra Kirkorian, and plenty of back breaking work, Em and Doc have a new home! It took many years to get just the right fit, and we are so blessed to have our special caretakers.  Not only do the animals love them the humans do as well.

Update Fundraisers:
Pie Town Festival & Babes and Bul lies

If we didn't see you at our fundraisers, let us tell you that you missed some great times. At the Pie Town Festival we met a lot of new people interested in Fur and Feather Animal Assistance. Also, at the Babes and Bullies' Dia de los Perros in Albuquerque, we did a lot of networking with people and their perros. Thanks to all who helped with these events.
We had a wonderful day in the sun.  Hope to see you all next year.

New Kitties at Fur and Feather
We recently took on 13 more kitties to help out two fellow rescues. In the past, many different rescue organizations have stepped up to lend a hand to FFAA by taking some of our rescues when we were too full and finding homes for a few animals.
It's great when rescues stick together and help each other out for the sake of all furry friends.
We have found most of these kitties homes, but we still have six left.  They are spayed and neutered. All are up to date with vaccines and worming. All of these kittens are friendly and sweet.  Give us a call now before they are all gone.
Abigail
Beautiful Abigail is a little shy but warms up easily. She loves to play with Pinky. These two are the same age, about 4 months old.

Lark
He is bit older than Abigail and Pinky.
Lark is a very unique Siamese but looks
almost calico--very beautiful and
playful.

Reconstruction of the B pens
We have seven kennels in B pens. This is where we put the dogs during the colder months. Last year snow would blow in from the north and drift up inside of that side. The past few months we have been fixing the air gaps and facing the sides with rough ends of logs. They are looking great and can be completely closed and winter tight. Now the dogs are nice and warm. Come by and check out how nice the B pens look after the much needed face lift.

Jango Room Needs Lots of Work

The roof is leaking and now the dry wall is falling away

The Jango room is our cat kennel and is named after a very special kitty who was rescued many years ago. Jango passed and the kennel is needing so much repair. This room provides heat and shelter for many cats and certain dogs in the winter.  The ceiling is caving in and the roof is not much better. Next spring we are planning to build a new kennel and reconstruct the Jango Room for the cats. At this point, we are just patching and making due. This building was made of straw bales and the plaster sides need some work. If anyone would like to come and help work on this project let us know. We would love to have your extra hands.
Inside the Jango Room, notice the caved in ceiling.
The outside of Jango Room. Notice the tin roofing coming up; wind and rain goes right under it, leaking to the inside.
Two Beautiful Ponies Saved from Slaughter

Little Boy and Pretty Girl

These two sweet ponies were rescued about three months ago.  It was a bad case; both were emaciated and had cuts and wounds all over them from fighting for food.  The red roan Appy is Little Boy.  He was worse off than Pretty Girl. We didn't think he would make it. The vet determined they are around two years old. Their teeth  were in very poor condition and this was one of the causes of the severe malnutrition. Now that they are getting plenty of food and their teeth are stronger. They are both gaining weight and living a good life.
Pretty Girl looking much better now and has put on a lot of weight

Little Boy may need to go on a diet, he is doing so well

ASPCA: Holiday Dangers for Pets
Things You Should Know
It's that time of year again-- the time when everyone is decorating, cooking, and coming together to celebrate. But the hustle and bustle of the holiday season can make it easy to forget about potential pet dangers, so whatever holiday you might be celebrating this year, you'll want to keep the following harmful hazards in mind:
10. Beware of excess wires. Keep wires, batteries and glass or plastic ornaments out of paws' reach. A wire can deliver a potentially lethal electrical shock, and a punctured battery can cause burns to the mouth and esophagus.
9. Noisemakers. While celebrating, it is easy to forget that loud noises and celebratory poppers or noisemakers can scare your pets. Try creating a safe place in your home where your pet can have some quiet space if needed.
8. Keep an eye out for salt. Ice melt, homemade play dough and salt-dough ornaments (even when dry) can all be a tempting salty treat for pets, but can cause life-threatening imbalances in electrolytes.
7. Medication monitoring. If you'll be having guests stay with you this year, be mindful of any medication they may bring. Houseguests who are unfamiliar with pets may not realize just how curious (and sneaky) they can be. Have your guests keep any medication in a closed cabinet instead of in a bag or suitcase.
6. Watch out for candles. If you decide to give your home that extra holiday glow this year, be sure not to leave your pets unattended around lit candles. A long tail or a curious paw could knock over a lit candle and potentially start a fire or burn your pet.
5. Holiday eats. We recommend keeping your pets away from the table and keeping lids tightly secured on trashcans. Many of our holiday favorites can be harmful, including sweets, fatty and spicy foods, and alcohol. You also want to make sure not to give your pet any turkey or chicken bones.  Check out our full list of pet-toxic foods to keep in mind when planning your holiday menu.
4. Tis' the season of snow globes. Some snow globes contain ethylene glycol, a highly toxic substance to all pets. If a snow globe is broken, the sweet smell can attract a pet to lick it up, leading to a potentially fatal intoxication. Keep these out of paws' reach!
3. Under the tree. Wrapped presents can pose a threat to curious cats and dogs depending on their contents. Be sure to keep any wrapped food, candy or treats up and away from your furry friends. Just because you can't see the contents, doesn't mean your pets can't smell them.
2. Pesky plants. While most people fret over poinsettias making their pets sick around the holidays, the truth is that these festive red plants only cause mild to moderate gastrointestinal irritation. However, there are a couple of other seasonal stems you should be wary of: Holly and mistletoe can cause gastrointestinal upset and cardiovascular problems when ingested, and various lilies that are often found in holiday bouquets can cause kidney failure in cats.
1. O' Christmas tree. If you're planning on putting up a tree this year, there are a couple of things you should know:
  • Make sure that your tree is tightly secured so that there's no chance of it tipping or falling over and causing injury to your pet.
  • Keep the tree water covered and inaccessible. Tree water may contain fertilizer and other harmful chemicals-not to mention it can become a breeding ground for bacteria that could cause nausea, diarrhea or stomach upset.
  • Stay away from tinsel for decoration. Ingested tinsel can cause severe vomiting, obstructed digestive tract, dehydration and could require surgery.

Adopt a dog
         Sponsor a dog
Here at Fur and Feather every animal deserves a chance. But not all of our special friends get the home or family they deserve.
Every one of our animals is cared for and loved. Some of our dogs have special needs, special meals or medication for a condition they may have. By sponsoring one of our dogs, you can help pay for spay or neuter, special medication, or special foods. It also will help lower the adoption fee for that specific dog. We will send you a photo of the sponsored pet and a Certificate of Sponsorship. Most of these dogs are not adoptable to most homes, so they will be living out their lives here at Fur and Feather. Of course you will be able to come visit your new pet and play with them, groom them, feed them or share your love. Just call and make an appointment.
Please consider helping  just one of our special furry friends. If you can't adopt, why not sponsor?
By pledging as little as $10 a month you will be helping a special soul. We will be sending out another email with photos and descriptions so you can find just the right pet to share your love with forever.
Benny is  great dude. He is pretty high energy and very smart. He is a quick learner and does best one-on-one with his person. He would be a great dog for an outdoorsy type, or a candidate for agility. We think he is a Heeler cross. Benny is ready for his forever home.
Benny
Hank
This little guy is so cool. He is a Dachshund Staffordshire Terrier cross. He gets along with everyone. Hank is medium to high energy, and will be a very loyal friend. He is good with children and cats. Hank catches  on pretty quickly. We think he would make someone very happy.

Bonnie
Bonnie came in with Clyde. They were both found near the Sawtooths. Bonnie is a red hound and just about 2 years old.  She is a little shy but very loving and easily trained.  She is good with children and cats and just about everything. She is ready for her forever home.
Bonnie
Lyla would make a great family dog. She is still a pup and could use some more training. She is very smart and learns fairly quickly.  She is great with children and most other animals.  She is not yet spayed but she will be and can be seen as up for adoption very soon. She is about a year old.
Lyla
Winslow  is a wonderful boy! He is about 7 or 8 years old. He's great with children and all other animals.  He would do well in a one pet family because he strives for all the attention.  He is a very loving boy and is waiting for his forever home.

Clyde Found His People

It is always great when a dog gets adopte d, but it was and is very special when right off the bat the dog knows he has been waiting for this special person.  This is how this adoption went.  Talking to Brent before he came out to meet Clyde we knew it was going to be a perfect fit.  When Brent and his wife came out, Clyde showed us it was a perfect match.  Days like this remind us that there is a person for every dog. Thank you for this great adoption!!!

Brad Forging
Brad has been hard at work making new latches and hooks for existing dog pens and runs.  He is using old horseshoes to create beautiful works of useful art.
R.I.P   Consuela
Our beloved, beautiful, sweet Consuela passed away last month due to liver failure.  She led a very happy life here at Fur and Feather. She will be greatly missed.
Consuela's Mona Lisa Smile
Fur and Feather has a number of senior dogs and one of the most unique and sweetest is Consuela. She is a greyhound cross and has been at the sanctuary for as long as anyone can remember. She had a few people interested in her but her smile may seem a bit out of the ordinary for most folks. Now our sweet Consuela is sick.  She has dysplasia and has stopped eating.  It's not that she isn't going to get the medical care she needs, it's just that it would be so nice to find her a home so she can get some extra love and care.  Her funny smile is hard to catch on camera, but when she gets excited she bares her teeth, not in aggression, but in a smile of love.

FFAA would like to give a big thank you to the great Albuquerque pet store "Long Leash on Life" for giving us over 6,000 pounds of quality dog and cat food!  Every year LLOL donates thousands of pounds to rescues and shelters in New Mexico.  This year they donated 150,000 pounds in all!  Next time you are in Albuquerque, stop in and thank them for us!  They are located on the corner of Montgomery and Eubank Blvd.

2016; One Heck Of A Year

Oh My Gosh, we can't believe that we have come to the end of 2016. We have done so many things it is hard to describe.
Fur and Feather Founder Laurie Beauchamp passed away over a year ago and the first six months after her passing was touch and go. Our biggest issue was how to fill her shoes. Laurie did the work of 10 people and we can never find anyone like her. Boy, did we try.
Once we got all our paper work in order, we set up a project list and stuck to our agenda and ever so slowly managed to become organized, carry on and complete some projects.
Having our great caretakers, Em and Doc, at the property is such a big help. But we still need of  some consistent volunteers that help with events, delivery of pet food and helping out at the facility. If you are wanting to lend a hand please call Sarah 575-773-4674.

What we have done this year:

We got the driveway graded and some much needed gravel in place. We put up two new pens. We did some much needed upgrades to some of the existing pens. New siding and winterizing of B pens is an ongoing project. Roofing was added on the horse barn. And last, but not least, the new mobile home is in place for our caretakers. Thank you all for your support!  We would not be able to do it without you.
