First things first: We WILL have candy at the library tomorrow night for trick-or-treaters. Please bring your kids here if you are in the area so I don't end up eating it all. All staff will be in librarian costumes. Now with that out of the way...

What a month! The Friends of the Library raised $777.67 at the Octoberfest Book Sale (if only they had collected one more dime...). We had an astoundingly successful first Book and Film Club at the Senior Center. We are bringing on Deb Hudgins as a regular programmer. We hired a new library assistant. I'm presenting about the Blackstone Valley Libraries and our Floating Collections at my first professional conference on Thursday. And we finished our parking lot! 

Despite it all, though, library use has been sagging a bit in recent months. So I want to make the the following pleas to everyone this fall:

  • If you've never been to a book club, come check one out! The Intrepid Readers and the Greatest Book Club Ever are both monthly features, and now we are starting to run a book club at the Senior Center as well. Check our calendar for dates, or look at our new flyer lines in our front windows next time you visit. I'm hoping to start a science fiction and fantasy book club soon as well since those seem in short stock in the Valley. 
  • Check out a pass if you've never done it before. You can earn hefty discounts to the Mystic Aquarium and Old Sturbridge Village, get a free parking pass for any MA state park, and more!
  • Bring your kids to storytimes! Deb's regulars are growing up. We need a new generation of little readers. We're working on setting up at least one storytime slot that will be ongoing rather than seasonal so that you can schedule around it better. 
  • Read. Read read read! These books are no better than bricks if they aren't getting used. I'd love to see books start out-circulating DVDs. If you can't make it to the library, poke our online collections in Overdrive, Libby, or Axis360.

The Music and Movement Series sponsored by the  YMCA Family & Community Partnership was such a huge hit that we are having Deb Hudgins here weekly starting November 7!

We will be making use of multiple funding sources throughout the year to keep this going, but for the time being it is sponsored thanks to the William R and Janet A Carrick Fund, administered through the Greater Worcester Community Foundation.

Deb will be with us every Tuesday at 1:00pm, barring holidays and other special occasions . Here is the upcoming schedule:

READING TO COOPER:
FINALLY GOT SOME OPEN SLOTS! JUMP ON 'EM!

If you aren't aware, Cooper is a greyhound who sits quietly while reluctant readers read aloud to him. He is at the library every first Thursday of the month for 15 minutes appointments from 6 to 7pm. He is usually booked solid months in advance, but we have the following open slots coming up. This is a great program for kids, teens, and even tweens who struggle reading aloud. He is super non-judgmental. Call the library or email [email protected] to book a slot.
