The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development (NJDOL) has announced, effective January 1, 2017, the minimum wage will increase from $8.38 to $8.44.
Minimum wage has increased by $1.19 since the November 2013 referendum passed,
modifying the New Jersey Constitution and requiring the NJDOL to review the minimum wage annually and announce any increase for the following calendar year by September 30th. Undeterred by this referendum, both the Senate and Assembly passed a bill that would increase the minimum wage to $15.00 per hour by 2021. Governor Chris Christie vetoed the bill in August but supporters of the bill are seeking to place the measure on the ballot for voter approval in the fall of 2017.
Employers should continue to follow the issue and in the mean time, be sure to pay all employees at least the minimum wage of $8.44 beginning January 1, 2017.
