Carol Wicks Receives George Burke Maxey Distinguished Service Award
Congratulations to
G&G Chair and and Frank W. and Patricia Harrison Family Professor Dr. Carol Wicks for receiving the George Burke Maxey Distinguished Service Award at this year's
Geological Society of America 2017 Annual Meeting!
The Hydrogeology Division's George Burke Maxey Distinguished Service Award, first presented in 1984, honors noted American hydrogeologist George Burke Maxey. An esteemed mentor and pioneering researcher, Maxey's career spanned more than 35 years and helped establish hydrogeology as the discipline we know today. Presented annually, the award recognizes exemplary service "to the hydrogeology profession and to the Hydrogeology Division."

Super Science Saturday
G&G students Allison Barbato, Brianna Crenshaw, Matt Danielson, Guibao Lui, Liz Olsen, Leslie Valentine, and Rafael Villanueva along with G&G faculty Dr. Barb Dutrow and Dr. Darrell Henry staffed the G&G booth at Super Science Saturday!
The LSU Department of Chemistry hosted
Super Science Saturday on October 28, 2017. More than 1,000 K-12 students and at least 1,200 parents attended the free event. The event was open to anyone interested in seeing science in action!
This year there were 20 stations with hands-on demonstrations and activities to engage students and adults alike. Each K-12 student that attended was given a Passport at the check-in area that had blocks for each of the activity stations! The activity stations this year were staffed by Albemarle, BASF, Dow, ExxonMobil, the Greater Baton Rouge Industry Alliance, LSU College of Science Departments and organizations, LSU Engineering Diversity Ambassadors, LSU Food Science, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO), the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE), Solutions Through Science, Iota Sigma Pi, and Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady of the Lake University Chemistry Department.

IODP Expedition 381
G&G PhD student Abah Omale is currently participating in a two month research expedition in the Gulf of Corinth, Greece.
From October 2017, a team of scientists, drillers and staff from the European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling Science Operator (ECORD-ESO) will take part in International Ocean Drilling Programme (IODP) Expedition 381, to drill the Corinth Rift, Greece. The rift is a unique laboratory situated in one of highest seismically active areas in Europe. This project, lasting up to 56 days, will drill into the main rift, which with its closed drainage system and high sedimentation rates, makes it an ideal location to examine the relationship between rift development and faulting, and how the landscape responds to those forcing factors. To do this the team will use a specialised geotechnical vessel, the DV Fugro Synergy. After the offshore phase, cored material will be taken to the IODP Bremen Core Repository (for an onshore sampling phase in January and February 2018) and split to reveal it's secrets.

Ireland, Ireland: A Student Experience
LSU undergraduate and graduate students travel the world every year. This past May, six graduate students and six undergraduate students in the
LSU Department of Geology and Geophysics embarked on a field trip to Ireland led by
Peter Clift, Charles T. McCord Endowed Professor of Geology & Geophysics, and Dr. Amy Luther, Assistant Professor of Geology & Geophysics and Director of Geology Field Camp, to learn about the multi-phase geological history of the island.

Chang Liu is Uncovering History at Sea
Chang Liu is a Ph.D. candidate in
Geology & Geophysics at LSU. Chang recently returned from a nine-week research cruise with the IODP (
International Ocean Discovery Program) in the South China Sea, where he joined assistant professor
Patricia Persaud. IODP is one of the world's largest research entities in the earth sciences. Chang was one of the sedimentologists onboard the JOIDES Resolution and collaborated with geoscientists from around the world while on the cruise.
Join us as Chang gives us peek of his journey at sea and his research at LSU!

Don Hood Awarded LaSPACE GRSA Grant
Don Hood was awarded an $8,000 grant from the LaSPACE GSRA to pursue his research project "Examining Periglacial Boulder Clustering with MBARS" during the 2017-2018 academic year! The Louisiana Space Consortium's Graduate Student Research Assistance (GSRA) Program provides small supplements for research / study for graduate students who are U. S. citizens, and who undertake a curriculum of space or aerospace related fields of study in math, science, or engineering at a college/university that is a Designated Member of the Louisiana Space Consortium. A new initiative under the LaSPACE Fellowship/Scholarship Component, introduced in the Fall of 2005, the GSRA Program helps address the challenge of strengthening the educational base among member institutions, in concert with state and NASA needs.
Don has progressed rapidly in his PhD program since joining Dr. Karunatillake's lab in August 2014 for graduate study.

Slippery Slopes: LSU Rsearchers Help Assess Submarine Landlside Risks in the Gulf
Why would the S.S. Virginia, an oil tanker sunk by a U-boat in 1942 with the loss of 27 lives, be moving along the seafloor today? Since the shipwreck's discovery in 2001, it has moved over 1,600 feet downslope.
The submarine edge of the Mississippi River Delta, known as the Mississippi River Delta Front, is located at the edge of the Gulf of Mexico's continental shelf. This region has long been known to be subject to large submarine landslides. The Mississippi River has historically dumped large amounts of loose sediments into this area. These sediments build up in large mounds, and eventually are prone to collapsing and producing landslides. The Mississippi River Delta Front is also an area with extensive oil and gas infrastructure, making these landslides problematic in many ways.
