Halloween Parade

Tuesday, October 31
8:00 am - 8:30 am - Coffee in the Gym
8:30 am - Costume Parade on the Turf Field

Parents of FSH goblins, storybook characters, and other magical trick-or-treaters, please join us on Tuesday, October 31 for a treat and a cup of coffee in the gym.  Drop your goblin off in class and join us in the gym from 8:00 am - 8:30 am while the children prepare for the Halloween Parade.

The Halloween Parade begins at 8:30 am, weather permitting, outside on the turf field. If it rains, festivities will be moved into the gym.

Please Note:  Children may wear child-inspired or store-bought costumes to school for the all-school Halloween Parade. Simplicity is the key, especially for the younger children. Children need to have regular clothes to wear for the remainder of the day. Scary masks are not permitted out of consideration for our younger students. In keeping with our Quaker philosophy, costumes may not include camouflage, weapons, or weapon-like accessories.

First Thursday Coffee
with Head of School,
Michael Zimmerman

Thursday, November 2, 2017 | 8:00 am
Schoolhouse Community Room

When students in a science class adopt a tree, the pride they feel in the specimen they draw, research, and with which they spend time is palpable. The joy of engaging with the natural world can be visceral and primal. The benefits of Outdoor Education include brain development, social learning, and immune system enhancement. Moreover, there is intrinsic value in knowing our world - forest and trees.  Might you have an outdoor adventure or experience to share? We look forward to hearing your stories too!

Please join me and Forest's Edge nursery school teacher, Meredith Woods, for a discussion of Outdoor Education at Friends School Haverford.

First Thursday Coffees afford an informal opportunity for parents to socialize, share feedback, raise issues, and ask questions. We will gather at 8:00 am to enjoy refreshments and each other's company. We will begin the meeting at 8:15 am.

If the topic of this month's coffee is of interest to you but you are unable to attend the meeting, please feel free to contact Nancy Hurley in the office to schedule an appointment to meet with me at a time that is convenient for you.

Regular and forthright discussion, open lines of communication, and the exchange of ideas improve our community. I am grateful for your support. I am always happy to hear from you.  Please feel free to come to First Thursday coffees with topics of your own for discussion.

I hope to see you there,

Michael

Skyping with NASA

Grades 5/6 is preparing for a very special class trip. On October 30, they will embark on a Mission to Mars. Each member of the class has a different role in the mission from MedTech to Engineer, Astronaut to Robotics Specialist. They are researching and learning all they can in preparation for the mission. They had the opportunity to Skype with Brian T. Smith, Flight Director at the NASA Johnson Space Center. Mr. Smith spoke with students from one of the mission control rooms for the ISS and answered various questions about propulsion, solid and liquid fuel, laser communications systems, communication delays, and current NASA projects. CBS3 and 6ABC were on hand for the conversation. Click here for news story. Click here for photos.
Grade 7 Visit to
Constitution Center

7th graders toured the Constitution Center to support their study of the Bill of Rights. The interactive exhibits include ruling on Supreme Court cases, voting, and taking the Presidential Oath of Office. The highlight of the trip was seeing Freedom Rising, a multimedia theatrical production that traces the American quest for freedom.  Click here for photos.

Boxtops Due This Friday
For Fall Submission
The first Box Tops submission of the year is next week. Send in your Box Tops by Friday for them to be counted.

Box Tops are an easy way to earn money for  our school and a fun way for kids to be involved in the process. Box Tops can be found on a variety of products you probably already buy. Ask your kids to be on the lookout for Box Tops on food packaging.   Download the collection form  and have them attach the Box Tops to the form. When they fill the form, send it into school.  Click here  for a complete list of participating Box Top products.
KidStuff Books

KidStuff Books will be on sale from  November 6 - 20  at a cost of $25. Books will be sent home with each student. If you do not wish to keep the book, it can simply be returned to school.  Middle Schoolers and our Carousel Connections Friends have kindly offered to prepare the books for distribution.  This fundraiser will benefit FSH's newest endeavor - beekeeping and honey extraction! The project really differentiates us from other schools and is something that involves students in all grades.
Belonging Matters...

Partnerships between young & older friends foster a sense of belonging. Read more in our latest Naturally Curious blog post by Kristin Lewis.

Pretzel Fridays

This pretzel initiative is an opportunity to fundraise for middle school trips, build community, and engage with math skills in meaningful ways. The Carousel Connections crew and middle school math students will sell pretzels during the class snack times on Fridays. If you would like your child to receive a freshly baked pretzel, please send a $1 in with him/her. Please note that we will not have a pre-paid sale due to our focus on the math and money exchange. Thank you for supporting our pretzel sale!
School Calendars are Still Available

It's not too late to purchase the school calendar. Each calendar is $15 and will benefit the PTO. The attached form can be returned with payment to the Main Office or to your child's teacher. Click here to download form. Questions? Please contact  Melisa Moore.

Haverford Meeting for Worship

Haverford Meeting, next door to the school, would like you all to know that families are always welcome to attend Meeting for Worship on Sundays. We offer an hour of quiet reflection and community open to everyone. Our members and attenders come from a variety of religious traditions and welcome the time together to share our thoughts. The Meeting has child care every Sunday - for babies and toddlers upstairs from 10:30 am - 11:30 am. For our school-age children we have a new First-Day (Sunday School) program. Usually those older children go into meeting with their parents or caregivers for 15 minutes (same as at school) and then upstairs with Teacher Elizabeth for fun and learning. We don't have a creed to teach, just a child-centered community for all with values and informal lessons on men and women of courage. We also learn from the children what they are interested in and what they would like to share. Then we have coffee, tea, snacks and fellowship afterwards.

Please join us any Sunday you can. For more details, call Kate deRiel at 610-446-8383. Thank you!
