Live WaterSmart by Adjusting Irrigation Systems When it's Time to "Fall Back"

When daylight saving time ends on November 5, residents can take action to save water in the months ahead by remembering to adjust their irrigation systems when they adjust other clocks.

"Adjusting irrigation is an easy way to Live WaterSmart, since landscapes need less water as the days get shorter and cooler," said Water Authority Water Resources Manager Dana Friehauf. 

Other water-saving practices for the months ahead include turning off irrigation systems when rainstorms are predicted and leaving them off for a least a week after significant rainfall. Also, installing rain barrels or cisterns helps capture stormwater from roofs and store it for future irrigation use.

Water Authority Hosts Tour of Key Water Facilities for Imperial Valley Representatives

Representatives from some of the Imperial Valley's leading agencies and organizations joined Water Authority staff and Board members on a day long tour of San Diego County water facilities on October 19. The participants were from the Imperial Irrigation District, Imperial County, the agricultural and business communities, cities and chambers. 

They toured the Claude "Bud" Lewis Carlsbad Desalination Plant, San Vicente Dam and Reservoir and the East County Advanced Water Purification Project, which are each part of the San Diego region's effort to maintain a safe and reliable water supply.

The Water Authority and Imperial Irrigation District are long-term partners in the nation's largest agriculture-to-urban water conservation and transfer agreement. Periodic meetings and tours promote collaboration by allowing people from Imperial and San Diego counties to continue building relationships.
Water Authority Celebrates First California Water Professionals Appreciation Week   

Earlier this month, the Water Authority joined water agencies around the state to celebrate California's first-ever Water Professionals Appreciation Week. 

From October 7-15, the Water Authority used social media to feature staff members from departments across the agency - Engineering, Water Resources, Public Outreach and Conservation, and Operations and Maintenance. 

The new annual event is intended to highlight the important role water professionals play in maintaining a safe and reliable water supply for the San Diego region and promote careers in the water industry .

Water Conservation Garden to Host Autumn Fest & Plant Sale   

The Water Conservation Garden is hosting its annual Autumn Fest and Plant Sale on Saturday, November 4 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in El Cajon.

The event will feature live entertainment, a beer garden, craft vendors, a petting zoo, food trucks, kids activities, "Ask the Designer" landscape consultations, and advice from partner water agencies.  Reservations for the popular "Ask the Designer" consultations are recommended; call 619-660-0614 x10.

The San Diego Union-Tribune published an article on October 25 by Carlos Michelon, a principal water resources specialist for the Water Authority, about the agency's newly renovated garden in Kearny Mesa.

"The Sustainable Landscaping Demonstration Garden serves as a centrally located example of the kind of practical, beautiful garden that residents and businesses can replicate. It includes about 40 varieties of low-water plants, along with irrigation technology such as inline drip and rotating nozzles," Michelon said.
