The Biomedical Engineering Society is proud to announce its 2017 Class of Fellows.
This year's class includes 20 members who were nominated by their peers.
Fellow status is awarded to Society members who demonstrate exceptional achievements in the field of biomedical engineering, and a record of membership and participation in the Society.
"This year's class truly exemplifies what it means to be a BMES Fellow. In addition to conducting ground-breaking research, BMES Fellows are leaders in education, promoting diversity and supporting all fields of science." said Lori Setton, BMES President.
BMES Fellows are invited to pursue leadership positions within the Society and work to improve the future of BMES. Fellows also play an integral role in supporting the field of biomedical engineering.

BMES and AIMBE offer travel awards for Public Policy Institute
The BMES Minority Network program will offer travel awards for underrepresented minorities to attend AIMBE's Public Policy Institute in Washington, DC, October 30 to 31, 2017.
Up to 20 underrepresented minority undergraduate students, graduate students and postdocs will receive awards to attend the Public Policy Institute for Rising Leaders workshop.
This 2-day workshop offers training in regulatory science and public health policy.

Rally for Medical Research set for Sept. 13 and 14 in DC
Held every September, this Capitol Hill Day event includes more than 300 national organizations coming together in support of the Rally for Medical Research.
The purpose of the Rally is to call on our nation's policymakers to make funding for National Institutes of Health (NIH) a national priority and raise awareness about the importance of continued investment in medical research that leads to more progress, more hope and more lives saved.

When you present your research and findings at the 2017 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (
ABRCMS), you'll join one of the largest communities of underrepresented minorities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) for a one-of-a-kind experience.
Submit your abstract for an oral or poster presentation, and join fellow researchers November 1-4, 2017, in Phoenix.
Abstract submission deadline: September 8, 2017
Your participation at ABRCMS will allow you to:
* develop your presentation skills,
* expand your scientific and professional development through innovative sessions,
* interact with peers through multiple networking opportunities, and
* learn about graduate schools, summer research opportunities, and postdoctoral fellowships through the robust exhibits program.
Students who submit an abstract may also be eligible to apply for a travel award. The travel award can help offset the costs of attending the conference and make it easier for you to join us!

BMES undergraduate design competition - top 6 teams presenting in Phoenix
BMES received 11 Design Competition applications from several Universities. BMES thanks all design team members for participating in this year's Undergraduate Design Competition.
The top 6 teams presenting in Phoenix are Johns Hopkins University, Stevens Institute of Technology, Purdue University, University of Maryland, Florida Institute of Technology and Virginia Commonwealth University.
All six design teams have been invited to attend BMES 2017 and present their work via oral presentations. The teams will compete to become one of the Top 3 winning teams receiving a monetary award First $3000, Second place $1500 and Third place $500.
BMES announces student chapter awardees
Congratulations to the 2017 Student Chapter awardees which include Outstanding Student Chapter awardee University of California, San Diego, Commendable Achievement awardee Arizona State University, Outstanding Mentoring Achievement awardee Clemson University, Outstanding Outreach Program awardee University of Pennsylvania and Outstanding Chapter-Industry awardee University of Maryland.
We look forward to providing each chapter its plaque on Saturday, October 14th during the Rita Schaffer Young Investigator Lecture & Diversity Award winner Plenary Session; 10:30-12:30pm in Phoenix.

Student Teams Gather for BMES Coulter College
Another successful BMES Coulter College program kicked off in Atlanta this month with 12 student teams participating and over 80 students, senior design faculty, clinicians, designers, and business advisors in attendance. From August 3rd to August 6th, rising undergraduate seniors from BME programs across the country came together in a creative environment to learn how to evaluate the best point of leverage within a given clinical need and understand how to evaluate possible solutions. By the end of the program, students developed a better understanding of how to balance providing clinical benefits alongside a viable commercial model.
On the last two days of the program student teams presented their designs and final projects in a venture capital pitch competition and the top teams received awards. BMES would like to recognize the winners and congratulate all the teams for their thought provoking presentations.
Thank you to the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation for a grant to support the program and to all those who participated in making BMES Coulter College a success.

Michigan researchers grow three-dimensional lung tissue
Michigan University researchers have successfully coaxed stem cells to grow into three-dimensional lung tissue which could be useful in future cell-based therapies that repair damaged lungs by cultivating new, healthy tissue, according to a university article.
Michigan researchers grew the tissue by injecting stem cells into a specially developed biodegradable scaffold, then implanting the device in mice, where the cells grew and matured into lung tissue, according to the article.
The team's findings were published in the Nov. 1 issue of the journal eLife.

Nanomaterials for targeting circulating tumor cells highlighted in CMBE journal
In the latest issue of Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering, Editor-in-Chief Michael King and coauthor Zhenjiang Zhang of Vanderbilt University assess the state-of-the-art in nanomaterials technology for capturing and targeting circulating tumor cells.
This review was published through the Open Access option, and is available to all readers without a subscription.
Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering recently received their latest, 2016 ISI Impact Factor of 2.535, representing the highest impact factor for the journal and an increase of 60% from the previous year.

Inkjet-printed tool enables sensitive diagnostic testing in point-of-care settings
Duke University researchers have created a portable diagnostic tool that can detect telltale markers of disease as accurately as the most sensitive tests on the market, while cutting the wait time for results from hours or even days to 15 minutes, the university announced.
Created by inkjet-printing an array of antibodies onto a glass slide with a nonstick polymer coating, the diagnostic tool, called the D4 assay, is a self-contained test that can detect low levels of antigens, the protein markers of a disease, from a single drop of blood, according to the article.

Tulane researchers honored with national stem award
Two Tulane scientists and a graduate student are among 40 national winners of the 2017 Inspiring Leaders in STEM Award, which honors professionals from underrepresented groups who have made a difference in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, according to a Tulane article.
The winners - psychology professor Michael Cunningham, biomedical engineering associate professor Michael Moore and doctoral student Katherine Elfer - will be featured with the other recipients in the September 2017 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.
Moore and Elfer are BMES members.
