The Maryland Office of Minority Health & Health Disparities presents Maryland's 14th Annual Statewide Health Equity Conference

The Maryland Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities' 14th annual statewide health equity conference will be held on December 7, 2017 from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM at Martin's West, 6817 Dogwood Road, in Baltimore.  The focus of this year's conference is "Bridging Health Equity Across Communities: Coordination, Collaboration, and Opportunities in Maryland." Challenge Competition: Improving Remote Monitoring of Pregnancy

The Health Resources and Se rvices Administration's (HRSA's) Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) announces a prize competition to support the development and testing of low-cost, scalable technology-based innovations to improve the ability of prenatal care providers to monitor the health and wellbeing of pregnant women remotely, especially women who live in rural and medically-underserved areas who have limited access to on-site prenatal care.
All submissions will be evaluated; separate prizes will be awarded for each of the three phases below. Phase 1: Design Phase 2: Development and Small Scale Testing Phase 3: Scaling.

The Children's Hospital of Philadephia and the American Academy of Pediatrics webinar "Current Issues in Vaccines"

On Wednesday, November 16, 2017, the Childrens Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) and the American Academy of Pediatrics will host a webinar entitled "Current Issues in Vaccines," presented by Paul Offit, M.D. Director, Vaccine Education Center at CHOP.  The webinar is one of a series of presentations supported by the Thomas S. McNair Scott Endowed Research and Lectureship fund.  Each "Current Issues in Vaccines" webinar presents topics being addressed by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), covered by the media, or asked about by parents. Specific topics will be available on the registration page approximately one to two weeks before each event. Each presentation will be 40 to 45 minutes, followed by 15 to 20 minutes of audience questions. Free continuing education credits are available.  For more information, click here.
Financing and Payment Strategies to Support High-Quality Care for People with Serious Illness: A Workshop

On November 29, 2017, the Roundtable on Quality Care for People with Serious Illness will host a public workshop on financing and payment strategies to support high-quality care for people with serious illness. The workshop will feature invited presentations and panel discussions on topics that may include:
  • Integrated financing models such as Medicare Advantage programs, Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), and risk-based payment approaches such as Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) and bundled payments
  • Programs such as the Medicare hospice benefit, Medicare Home Health Care, Medicaid Home Health Care, and financing and payment methods for the dual eligible population
  • Incorporation of performance metrics in payment models, such as pay for performance and performance incentives
  • Potential policy steps to address key gaps, challenges, and opportunities related to financing and payment models to support high-quality care for serious illness.  The workshop will also be live webcast.  For more information, click here.

    CHRC issues FY 2018 Call for Proposals

    On October 19, the Maryland Community Health Resources Commission (CHRC) released the FY 2018 Call for Proposals, which looks to support innovative and sustainable projects that serve vulnerable populations and promote health equity. 
     
    Letters of Intent will be due on November 14, and full grant proposals will be due December 18.  Grant awards are expected to be made by the CHRC in February 2018.
     
    The CHRC is hosting a public information call for potential applicants on Monday, November 6 at 10 am (Dial in number: 1.866.247.6034, Access code: 4102607046).   Following the call, the CHRC will post a "Frequently Asked Questions" document for potential applicants.  
     
    This year's Call for Proposals looks to support three categories of programs: 
     
    (1) Promoting delivery of essential health care services: primary/preventative care services, dental services, and women's health care services;
    (2) Addressing the heroin and opioid epidemic through integrated behavioral health service delivery; and
    (3) Promoting food security and addressing childhood and family obesity.

    Maryland Rural Health Association hosts 2017 Maryland Rural Health Conference

    The Maryland Rural Health Association (MRHA) hosted the 2017 Maryland Rural Health Conference earlier this month in Garrett County. The conference, " Accelerating Change in Rural Maryland: Upstream & Downstream Strategies," invited experts on the national, state, and local levels to offer their perspective on the key issues involved in rural health, economic development, workforce, and social determinants of health. Copies of these presentations are accessible on the MRHA website. 
     
    The CHRC was one of several sponsors of the MRHA conference, which included a panel discussion with the legislators pictured below: Delegate Wendell R. Beitzel, Garrett and Allegany Counties; Delegate Michael W. McKay, Allegany and Washington Counties; Senator George C. Edwards, Allegany, Garrett, and part of Washington Counties; Delegate Jason C. Buckel, Allegany County; Delegate Karen Lewis Young, Frederick County; and Senator Brian J. Feldman, Montgomery County. The picture below also includes:  Dennis R.     Maryland Rural Health Association releases third white paper, "Dental Access in Rural Maryland: Innovative Approaches to Care"

    The  Maryland Rural Health Association  (MRHA)  and the CHRC are partnering to release a series of white papers exploring rural health issues in Maryland and the impact of CHRC-funded programs in rural areas.  Earlier this month, MRHA released its third white paper of the series, "   Dental Access in Rural Maryland: Innovative Approaches to Care," which provides an overview of the challenges of accessing affordable dental care in isolated rural communities and examples of initiatives that increase access to dental care in vulnerable rural communities.

    The white paper describes five CHRC-funded programs:

    Health Partners Dental Clinic in Charles County;
    Allegany Health Right and Mountain Laurel Health Center's provision of subsidized dental care in Allegany and Garrett Counties;
    Access Carroll and West Cecil Health Center's partnerships with the University of Maryland School of Dentistry to provide care in Carroll,Cecil and Harford Counties.

    The first white paper in the series, "Social Determinants of Health and Vulnerable Populations in Rural Maryland," was published in December 2016, and the second paper, "Bringing Care Where it is Needed: A Rural Maryland Perspective," was published in May 2017.

    West Cecil Health Center holds ribbon cutting for Dental Clinic in Perryville
     
     
    On September 26, the West Cecil Health Center hosted a ribbon-cutting event to celebrate a new partnership with the University of Maryland School of Dentistry to expand access to dental services to under-served residents of Cecil and Harford Counties. Under a cooperative agreement, the West Cecil Health Center will implement operations of the Dental School's clinic in Perryville which maintains its status as a clinical teaching site. The clinic is supported by a $325,000 grant from the CHRC, and ongoing support from Union Hospital.

    Catholic Charities DC celebrates the grand opening of the Susan Denison Mona Center  in Temple Hills

    On October 3, Catholic Charities DC hosted a grand opening for the Susan Denison Mona Center in Temple Hills.  The event was attended by a number of state and local officials. Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker, III, and State Senator Douglas Peters from Prince George's County were invited to speak.  The new center will provide medical and dental services, immigration and legal aid, and food and nutrition programs for vulnerable populations impacted by adverse social determinant of health. In 2016, Catholic Charities DC received a $200,000 award from the CHRC to support the center's dental clinic. To view the press coverage of the event, click  here.
     
    The Commission has awarded 36 grants totaling $7.2 million to expand access to dental services in community-based settings.  These grants have supported programs in 14 jurisdictions and have providedd dental services to more than 54,000 individuals.  For more information about CHRC's dental grants, click  here .

    Health Partners leverages CHRC grant to receive additional $175,000 in funding from the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation

    Health Partners, a nonprofit primary care and dental provider in Charles County, has leveraged CHRC funding to receive $175,000 from the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation to support the recent expansion of its dental program. Health Partners predominantly serves low-income, un/underinsured individuals in Waldorf and Nanjemoy and has received a number of grants from the CHRC.  In 2017, Health Partners received a two year, $100,000 grant to increase the capacity of their dental program and a $150,000 grant to support its primary care program. 
     
    Supporting programs that expand access to affordable, high-quality health services for low-income individuals and leverage additional funding are priorities of the CHRC.  Since its inception, the initial funding provided by the CHRC ($60.3 million) has enabled its grantees to leverage $20.3 million in additional funding.
