Did You Know?

On average, Electric Vehicle fuel costs are 50% of the costs of operating a vehicle that runs on gasoline. That's like paying $1 for a gallon of gas when charging with an EV-friendly rate during Off-Peak or Super Off-Peak hours.

Message From the Executive Director of SBCCOG

As 2016 winds down, we think back to a very busy year at the SBCCOG's Environmental Services Center with staff conducting over 100 community events and workshops and implementing programs all providing ways to make our communities sustainable through water conservation, energy efficiency, and innovative ways to travel. We could not have done it without our wonderful volunteers. Please take time to read our section highlighting our 2016 Volunteer Recognition in this issue.

Looking forward to the New Year, we would like to take this opportunity to invite you to register early for our 18th Annual General Assembly Friday, February 24, 2017. The topic this year "Driving The South Bay's Digital Future." The event is free, but we need your RSVP at www.southbaycities.org by February 15 so we can prepare.

Wishing you a joyous and sustainable Holiday Season!

SoCalGas Announces "SoCalGas Advisory" Conservation Notification Program to Reduce Risk of Natural Gas Shortages This Winter

SoCalGas announced a new conservation notification program designed to reduce consumers' natural gas use to lower the risk of possible natural gas and electricity shortages this winter. Beginning  December 1, 2016 , a "SoCalGas Advisory" was issued by SoCalGas under specific conditions, such as when demand for natural gas is projected to potentially exceed supply. Similar to the "Flex Alert" program used by the California Independent System Operator (CAISO), which issues calls for consumers to reduce electricity usage during high-demand periods, SoCalGas Advisories will ask customers to reduce their natural gas use.

L.A. Metro
Beginning December 11, 2016, Metro is Making Several Changes
to Improve the Efficiency of Your Bus Service.

Lines 910/950: There will be a minor northbound route change to improve safety in San Pedro. Buses will use Beacon St. instead of Harbor Bl. Passengers who board northbound buses on Harbor Bl. at 1st St. should instead board on Beacon St. at 1st. Passengers who board northbound buses at the Harbor-Beacon Park & Ride Lot should instead board on northbound Beacon St at O'Farrell St. There are no changes to the southbound route. Three additional buses have also been added to the line to improve on-time performance. In order to improve access and reduce overcrowding during peak travel periods, Line 950 buses will now be serving the Slauson and Manchester Stations on the Harbor Transitway.

Another Successful Holiday Light Exchange!

Congratulations South Bay - a successful Holiday Light Exchange was held November 9 and 10, 2016 at the offices of the South Bay Cities Council of Governments' Environmental Services Center located in Torrance.   South Bay residents received 260 new boxes of LED Holiday lights in exchange for old incandescent strands.  Learning of the event on KCAL Channel 9 news, many people brought in multiple strands to help get them off the grid knowing that the SBCCOG will recycle them properly.  Homes decorated with Holiday LED lighting will realize an 80% energy saving over using incandescent lighting.  We want to thank our generous sponsors, Energy Upgrade California, Chevron, South Bay Association of REALTORS®, Athens Services, Continental Development Corporation, GSE Solutions, and Susan Jones 3 Leaf Realty.  Pictured with the mound of old lights awaiting their delivery to Walser's for recycling are SBCCOG staff members Amanda Maki and Cierra Washington.
