LetterFromDirector Letter from the Director

Over the years, B/CS Habitat has been blessed to have some of the best and brightest and most caring people in the Brazos Valley serve as volunteers on our board of directors. This December marks the completion of six years of service for two directors who are especially meaningful to me:  Gordon Carstens and Marty Walker .

Before joining the Habitat staff, I volunteered with my church, Christ United Methodist. Gordon Carstens and his wife Rhonda were the organizers for fundraising, volunteer days, and meal donations. Gordon continues to impress me with the way he shares his enthusiasm for Habitat with others. One of the reasons Gordon is so successful in gathering support for Habitat is that he is well respected for all the other good things he does. When I joined the staff, I was happy to have a friend in Gordon on our board of directors.

Three months into the job, I changed roles and started working very closely with Marty Walker, our treasurer at the time. Marty was a great mentor to me as I learned about Habitat and the ways we could improve our accounting processes. As I transitioned roles again, and began dealing with more aspects of the organization, Marty always made time to share his wisdom with me. Time and again, Marty's advice proved effective, and he has always been a pleasure to work with.

I am thankful for both of these gentlemen: for their help in serving our community, for the example they set for others in their circles of influence, and for their leadership on our board in moving Habitat forward over the years.

Thanks to all the current and former board members that have served Habitat. What you have done and continue to do makes a difference in the lives of the families we serve, and that difference ripples out into the lives of those they come into contact with. I look forward to meeting and working with the board members who are yet to come, and serving together.

Merry Christmas to you all!

Andy York, Executive Director
Appeal Skyrocketing Housing Prices and Construction Costs Make B/CS Habitat's Mission All The More Pressing

In the past five years, Bryan/College Station has consistently been listed as one of the fastest growing cities in the United States. With the influx of new residents, demand for housing has outstripped supply. We have seen an unprecedented increase in home values in this area. For many hardworking  low-income families in our community, the dream of homeownership is all that more elusive as the price of homes has skyrocketed out of their reach. Because of this, we at B/CS Habitat for Humanity have an even more pressing desire to increase our capacity to build affordable homes for these families.

However, B/CS Habitat is not immune to the increase of real estate prices and construction costs. We have seen construction costs increase by 30% in just the last three years, and this trend does not seem to be slowing. Therefore, it is imperative for B/CS Habitat to continue growing its support base and community partnerships in order to fulfill our mission. And to this end, we need your help to make homeownership a reality for low-income families in our community!

There are many ways to contribute and partner with B/CS Habitat. From in-kind donations to monetary donations, from hosting a B/CS Habitat fundraising housewarming party  to sponsoring a business profit share day, we are humbled by the generosity and creativity of this community. If you or your business would like to partner with B/CS Habitat, we invite you to contact our Development Director,   Carl A. Orozco, at [email protected]

We are also excited to announce that for the month of December, Fred and Sue Ellen Davis along with Davis & Davis Lawyers are matching donations to B/CS Habitat. If you plan to give before the end of the year, you have the opportunity to double your donation and make a greater impact. So donate today!

Everyone has the ability to "love your neighbor as yourself" and positively impact the future of our community. We have seen how safe and decent homes can unlock the potential of families to excel and contribute to our community.  B/CS Habitat families that formerly spent all their resources dealing with major health issues, over-crowded and unsafe living conditions are no longer just trying to survive, but are building better lives. The Lopez family is one of these families. Before partnering with Habitat, they lived in substandard housing with serious mold issues, no A/C in the summer and no heat in the winter, they were constantly dealing with health emergencies. After working with B/CS Habitat to build their own house, they are now THRIVING! No longer struggling with asthma, the Lopez children are doing well in school and are participating and winning in competitive boxing. (To read more about the Lopez family and  their latest accomplishments.)

Everyone deserves a decent place to live. You can help be the difference in a family's journey to homeownership. Please consider partnering with B/CS Habitat as we head into 2017 and help us continue our mission of bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope.

A very merry Christmas from all our B/CS Habitat families to yours!

RojoA Very Merry Christmas for the Rojo Family!
On Saturday, December 17th at 9am, the Rojo family received the keys to their new BCS Habitat home at their home dedication!

Back in June, BCS Habitat staff surprised Libia Rojo at her family's trailer in Bryan to tell her that she had been selected as a Habitat partner family. Since then, the Rojo family has put in 500 hours of sweat equity on Habitat houses including their own, and has successfully fulfilled all financial requirements  to move in!

She moved with her three youngest children from a small two bedroom trailer home to a four bedroom home with a yard for her children to play. ( Read more about the Rojo family.)

Restore
B/CS Habitat Restore receives generous donations from community businesses
Since 1995, BCS Habitat ReStore has been the go-to discount home improvement store and donation center for new and gently used furniture, appliances, home accessories, building materials and more in Bryan/College Station. For over 20 years, its proceeds have been used to help local families build and purchase an affordable home through Habitat for Humanity.

In 2016, BCS Habitat ReStore has continued to grow its partnerships with local businesses who have generously donated to ReStore and directly to the construction needs of the homes BCS Habitat for Humanity builds. Two such businesses are Ferguson Plumbing located on Osborn Lane in Bryan, and Chapman's Paint Co on Villa Maria, also in Bryan. When Restore's Volunteer & Procurement Coordinator, Madeline Zwicke, contacted Ferguson Plumbing's Bryan Branch Manager, Jason Johnston, he readily offered to donate all the toilets for BCS Habitat homes! Soon after, he also started sending top of-the-line lighting fixtures to ReStore. Chapman's Paint Co has also been a long time ReStore partner for years, donating gallons and gallons of quality paints.

Along with individual donors, companies such as Ferguson Plumbing and Chapman's Paint are what keep BCS Habitat ReStore so well stocked with amazing offerings. The more donations ReStore receives and the more people shop, the more money ReStore has to contribute to BCS Habitat for Humanity mission of providing a hand up to our low-income neighbors and eliminating substandard housing in Bryan and College Station.

This holiday season, we at BCS Habitat for Humanity and BCS Habitat ReStore are deeply grateful for all our in-kind donors!

If your business would like to make an in-kind donation to BCS Habitat ReStore, please contact  our Volunteer & Procurement Coordinator,  Madeline Zwicke, at (979) 204-6245 or email her at [email protected]
