FEATURED EVENT: Mt. Everest Climber Visits West Union
On Thursday, Oct. 19, West Union students had a rare and special opportunity to hear from a professional female mountain climber: Hilaree O'Neill. A member of National Geographic's speakers bureau, Hilaree is the first woman to have climbed both Mt. Everest and adjacent mountain Lhotse in a 24-hour period, and she has been named one of the most adventurous women in the world of sports by Outside magazine. Hilaree talked to the students about the importance of teamwork, perseverance, and believing in yourself when tackling any task or goal. She also encouraged students to be mindful of how their actions affect those around them. Following her talk, students showed Hilaree the class projects they had worked on leading up to her visit.

Additional Policies to Review
Due to an error with our vendor, the yearly District Operations Policies training module was removed from the training plan after the system was up and running. These selected policies are required to be reviewed and acknowledged by employees on a yearly basis. The due date for their review is Nov. 10. Building-based staff will be working with their principals to complete this training; other staff should complete the review by following the link that was sent to them by the SafeSchools system. If you did not receive the e-mail, have questions or need assistance, please contact Michelle Brady, Safety and Emergency Preparedness Manager (x6691).

Be Safe and Healthy This Halloween
As young people take to the streets this Tuesday in search of Halloween treats, drivers are urged to use caution, especially in neighborhoods, and to keep a close eye out for kids. If you have kids and aren't up for the full neighborhood trek, consider taking them to downtown Hillsboro instead. Many of the downtown merchants are participating in the Safe 'N Sane Halloween event from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. If the candy scene has you feeling tricked, consider making one of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation's eight Healthy Halloween recipes and sharing a picture on Facebook or Twitter using #SweeterStudents for a chance to win one of 50 Target gift cards for $500.
