Kitah Dalet had fun experiencing some of the events of the past few Parashot (Bible verses). For Lot's wife turning into a pillar of salt, they handled specimens of salt and black mud, which Rabbi Holman had brought from the Dead Sea. The kids were convinced that their skin was smoother afterwards!

Thankful for Community
by Carla Goldberg
Preschool Director
There is a lot to be thankful for at Akiba-Schechter. Last Wednesday, in honor of Grandparent/Special Friend's Day, we all came together and celebrated what we are thankful for at Akiba: our children, our teachers, and our community. I had the pleasure of greeting many of the grandparents and special friends as they entered the building. I could immediately see how happy they were to be invited and included in this special day. Then I had the opportunity to walk through the building and into the classrooms and hear first hand how impressed our guests were with Akiba-Schechter. One special friend shared with me, " When I walked into the building I could immediately feel the warmth, the intelligence and the thoughtfulness of all of the work that the children are participating in. I am also impressed with how there is such a sense of community here - that does not happen everywhere - it is a very special place".
I am grateful to be a part of this wonderful community as both an educator and a parent. I hope that you find opportunities to be involved and engaged in your child's education, whether it's by joining the PTO, attending the Kindergarten through 4th grade Spaghetti Dinner on
December 14, coming to
the Chanukah Assembly on
December 21,
and participating in our Annual Campaign.
Shabbat Shalom!

Toldot
by Rabbi Holman
In this week's Torah reading, the blind and aging Yitzchak tries to bless his elder son, Esav. Aware of Esav's immoral behavior, Rivka induces Yaakov to fool his father by pretending to be Esav and get the blessing instead. How is it that Yaakov did not see the difference between his sons and that he would not promote the more righteous Yaakov? The Midrash tells us that the wicked Esav deceived his father by asking questions about the performance of tzedakah and other moral acts. Unaware of Esav's immoral behavior, Yitzchak assumed that the righteous Yaakov would be joined and supported by the physical efforts of his not-so-scholarly brother. Yitzchak saw great potential in his son, Esav, and the commentators point out that Esav was quite gifted both mentally and physically. When this potential went unrealized, Yitzchak did not shun his son but attempted to encourage him by blessing him. Based on his perception he acted like any parent would - with love, acceptance and encouragement.
Shabbat Shalom!

Andy Warhol Portraits
For self portraits this month, the Kindergarteners decided to do them the Andy Warhol way. The teachers introduced the children to a few art works by Andy Warhol and the class had a great dialogue about it. They highlighted the four similar pictures while discussing the four different colors that the famous artist chose to color his work. The second stage was to give the children a page of four images of Mickey Mouse and allow them to explore this new technique. Since the learning process is as important or even more so than the final product, the teachers explained that they understand that this was not easy, that there probably would be a few mistakes while working, and this was ok. It was impressive to see the level of concentration the children demonstrated and how they made a great effort to really get it right. Their Andy Warhol portraits will be on display soon for all to see.

The Green Room has been very interested in building lately. The children love big blocks, small blocks, tree blocks, clear blocks... pretty much any kind of block that you can think of! They are learning about how to balance them and how to plan what they would like to construct. Here, Mary Beth is building with Oli and Avi

Another Female Presidential Candidate
The votes are in! The 3rd/4th graders in Mrs. Leonard's class read biographies for their monthly book report. The students created posters listing reasons why their "candidate" would be a good president. They presented their candidates to the class and all of them had the opportunity to vote for the person they felt would be a good president. Some of the candidates were Harry Houdini, Walt Disney, Ann Frank, Ghandi and Albert Einstein. The winner was Harriet Tubman!

For the second unit in Mrs. Brackman's and Mrs. Gold's Jewish Thought class, students are learning about heroism. This week they had a silent conversation about pictures that were put up around the room, discussing whether or not these pictures depicted heroism.

History Fair Is Coming!
Akiba-Schechter will be participating in History Fair again this year. History Fair is organized by National History Day, which promotes 5th - 8th graders becoming historians by researching specific topics of personal interest and proving a thesis through primary source evidence. We're eager to tell you all about this program, how Akiba fits into it, and what our goals and expectations are for this year. Middle School parents will be receiving an email with a PowerPoint Presentation on History Fair at Akiba. We will then be hosting a Q&A session on Wednesday, December 21, right after the Chanukah Assembly. We encourage parents to stay after the Assembly to learn more about this incredible opportunity and speak to History Fair teachers about their questions.

A Secret Project on Rules
The 2nd trimester is under way in Mr. Milner's 5th/6th grade Language Arts class, and they just finished reading the novel
Rules
. While some of the students questioned their satisfaction with the ending of the book, overall they really enjoyed reading, discussing and writing about this thought-provoking novel about a 12-year-old girl who learns what it takes to be a good friend, sister and human being. As the students finish up their analytical essays about who, from
Rules,
they would want to be friends with and as they wrestle with the question about whether Catherine is truly a dynamic character, they are preparing themselves of an elaborate, fun, interactive secret project! It is a secret because Mr. Milner has told them very little about it, aside from doing a mini-survey in order to best organize and plan this upcoming project in which they will explore the characters, setting, themes and symbols of
Rules
in a new and unique way. The students' excitement is building...

Response Center Educators Talk to 5th/6th Graders About Puberty
|
|
Marnie Spiegel and Sarah Casper_ Response Center Educators visit 5th and 6th graders |
|
As we all know well, puberty is often a challenging and confusing time for young people as they experience significant changes in their bodies. This year, as in each of the previous two years, we are pleased that educators from the Response Center* are spending time with our 5th and 6th graders during their flex period and teaching them about the physical and emotional changes they will experience during this stage of development.
Once again, the Response educators spend one class period with students, divided into small groups by grade level and gender. Together, we create a safe environment where our students feel comfortable asking questions and discussing potentially awkward topics. The material covered includes the following: male and female anatomy and an overview of puberty for both boys and girls, including normalizing different experiences and ages at which children begin puberty. Because we know that parents are the primary educators of their children, and we expect that families have different values and expectations in this area, our facilitators encourage the students to talk to their parents about these issues. Understanding puberty is an important part of growing up. It does not happen in one sitting; it is an ongoing process that continues for years. We encourage you to continue the conversation at home.
*The Response Center, a program of Jewish Child and Family Services, is a youth social service agency located in West Rogers Park that aims to empower youth and their families to make healthy life choices. Response educators have a widespread cultural sensitivity, and much experience providing these and other programs in Jewish day schools throughout the Chicago area, from Solomon Schechter Day School to Arie Crown Hebrew Day School. Their approach and materials are informed by Jewish family values.

Classroom Wish Lists
Our PTO wants to support the efforts of our staff and faculty to make sure the classrooms have all the added resources that teachers may need throughout the year. Items range from new games for the classrooms, bean bags to a printing press for art class. Please browse the Amazon-created wish lists (search of Akiba-Schechter!) but remember if you have any of these items in your home or have a way of obtaining them outside of Amazon, please feel free to do so. Once items are obtained, they will be removed from the wish list. Books need not be purchased, but can be lent from your family library. Games can be donated from homes if your family is done playing them. Don't feel like you only have to contribute, donate or lend to your child's classroom, the whole school can benefit.
