TNG: Making You Look Good Since
2010

Nick Tesi , Founder TNG Visual Effects

It's Christmas time again! I love this time a year, but it comes all too fast and before you notice it is in your rear view mirror.  I keep trying to close down between holidays but we get too busy and end up working through it.  It is still a joyous time and all of us at TNG wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

At TNG, we are developing more techniques in relation to
3D scanning to give you even better 3D models. We are pushing deeper into photogrammetry and looking at drones to expand our offerings along with our already crack team of high-tech scanners, skilled modelers, and quick mobility.

We are always researching new technology and software to keep the quality of our service at the highest level, and to accelerate our pipeline. We do our best to provide a great product to our customers.

LiDAR with Photogrammetry
LiDAR
3D scanning became a known technology when in 1971 Apollo 15 used it to map the surface of the moon. Today it is used in a number of industries; architecture, industrial, law enforcement, medicine and geology, just to name a few.  In the entertainment industry we have used it to 3D scan large subjects like cars, trucks, airplanes, statues, structures , buildings, and environments.
Train
When it comes to buildings, LiDAR s canning has also been handy in mapping the interior in order to build an environment that can be digitally walked through; or to visualize and digitally show where walls will be moved during a restructure.

Recently a new trend is emerging which pairs LIDAR scanning with photogrammetry to get the best of both worlds.

With photogrammetry many (sometimes hundreds of) digital images are processed by a software program which aligns them all, creating a point cloud.  From there we build a mesh and ultimately a photorealistic model. During this process t he scale is arbitrary until a measurement is defined.

By combining these two technologies we hope to advance the way that we build 3d models for the entertainment industry, harnessing the best aspects available with today's tools.

TNG  in the Media
We 3D scan and model lots of non-human and unusual characters, including the pigs and wolves in this anti-smoking campaign directed at teens.

The Drones are Coming!
Historically the high cost of renting LiDAR equipped aircraft has been prohibitive, keeping the use of this extremely useful technology to a minimum.  Only projects with big budgets could schedule airborne LiDAR scans regularly. However with today's drone capabilities we now have a new alternative to film from what was previously considered a somewhat inaccessible perspective for many budgets.

There are so many benefits of drones across a variety of sectors.  Every week, we read about many new benefits of using drones in science, agriculture, construction, marketing, archaeology, conservation and the environment. They are saving lives, time, and money.
Nick Tesi investigating a new drone model.

Today drones have a more practical effect on our lives.  Drone innovation and technology have improved immensely. Combining improved drone technology with existing technology (cameras, infrared sensors, 3D mapping and software) has given researchers, scientists, universities, and businesses new avenues for their use. In the very near future drones will be used to provide updates on weather, to assist fire and rescue teams and even to locate live land-mines.

Creating precise 3D imaging of large monuments, sculptures and buildings is a growing sector where drones are being used.  They can be used in films, gaming and modeling. A great example is mapping Christ the Redeemer and inspecting for damage on the the highest freestanding structure Emley Tower in the UK, keeping workers safe.
At TNG Visual Effects we are always investigating and adopting any new technology that will help us fulfill our customer's 3D scanning needs, and we look forward to seeing how drones will fit into our pipeline.
Building a Human Experience
Building the human is nearly an every day experience for us here at TNG as that is what is most in demand.

When you, as a producer or VFX Supervisor, approach this as a task, you must decide if you should use the live character, a stand-in model, or a 3D Scan.  Deciding factors include budget, action to be performed and if the project really needs the scene.

If you choose the digital route, the search then commences to  find a company that will give you the best 3D model for the best price and on time.

Unless you already have a reliable vendor that does all your work Google is of course your largest database to ask questions about nearly everything including 3D scanning and who is available in your area. Do a search for 3D scanning services and see who is in your area, and what their portfolio looks like. Then to get a bid on specifically what you need. Remember to include expressions, costume changes and any props.

Don't forget to ask for availability and delivery, two very important questions, (especially if you need the models on short notice.)

3D characters are getting much more refined these days, and it's nice to have a vetted go-to source established.

Good luck with your future projects and let us know if you have any of those questions, we are always here to help.
