Prevent "Bagpipe Lung"

There has been a lot of discussion about "Bagpipe Lung" going around in the news again recently.  A 61 year old man died due to a bad reaction to mould and fungi lurking inside his bagpipes.   Although this was a rare fatal case, Mould and fungi can build up in any wind or brass instrument if you don't clean them correctly and regularly.

It is recommended to dry your bagpipes with brushes and swabs every time you play to remove the moisture build up. If you have a zippered bag, unzip it and air it out when you are done playing or practicing. Some recommend rinsing sheepskin bags with hot water and bleach annually.  Others use a disinfectant such as MacClens on their pipes.  There are various ideas on best practices to clean your pipes.

Playing the bagpipes has health benefits too. An 8 year old from Ramsey, Cambridge, who suffers from Cystic Fibrosis found that his health has improved since taking up the bagpipes. Several pipers also report an increase in lung capacity.

Scottish Trivia

Michaelmas day is celebrated on Sept 29th in honor of the Archangel Michael.  It marks the end of harvest, the beginning of autumn, and the shortening of days.  It was also one of the "quarter days" in England, Ireland and Wales when accounts had to be settled.

Product Reviews Kinnaird Evolution Drone Reeds

Kinnaird Evolution Drone Reeds

"I've had my new reeds for a few months, and could not be more pleased. I've tried many others over the past 25 years, and have always been frustrated until now. They've performed perfectly from the very first try, and I play a lot! In addition to the great sound and easy strike-in, the pointed ends make it easier to install in the stocks without bumping them loose. All around great reeds!"
