PTSA NEWS
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Hello Everyone.
There seems to be a buzz in the air about student teacher conferences based on the memo from our principal, Tara Gray. I think that a new administration always bring change, and we as creatures of habit can find it very disquieting. But change can be good here. For some parents, the arena conference was not effective as a tool to meet with teachers and discuss their students. For other parents, this was the one opportunity given to meet with teachers, and not having any other basis to go on, was effective to them. I think we should try to be open to a new venue for the opportunity to talk with teachers about students and meet their teachers. At the event on November 28th, parents are given the opportunity to meet teachers at a meet and greet 5:00 pm -6:30 pm. A PTSA general meeting follows. All are welcome to attend, even your students. I also think we need to remember:
The teachers and staff are invested in the success of your student at IS.

Many of you may be wondering about the push by the PTSA for community at our school. By creating a community at a small choice school, we are able to meet with teachers at this event.  We can also meet other parents of students in their grade at this event and know them. This is what community is about. I welcome the opportunity from the administration to meet with teachers on a more social basis. An hour and ½ for meet and greet is truly wonderful. Let us all take advantage of this.

Best,
Meribeth Nordloef-Pedersen
ISPTSA President 2017-2018

HAVING DIFFICULTY WITH YOUR TEEN? THE BELLEVUE COMMUNITY HAS ACCESS TO TWO EXCELLENT (AND FREE!) SUPPORTS

Parent-Teen Mediation Program
Sponsored by the City of Bellevue are free, confidential mediation services to teens and their families. They provide parents and teens with a neutral forum to have productive discussions about disagreements. The mediators work in teams of two and deal with issues such as school performance and attendance and social issues such as activities, friendships, dating and curfews.

Each mediation session lasts about two hours, and there are usually three to four sessions. Parents and teens in the mediations reach agreement about 75 percent of the time. Even more of them say that mediation helped improve their relationship.

Through the year-long program students generate business ideas, conduct market research, write business plans, pitch to a panel of investors, and launch their very own companies. With exciting guest lecturers from local businesses to dynamic field trips to local companies, students learn how to develop and run an enterprise in a fun, projects-based approach.
