Books on Wheels
Berwick Area United Way

Books on Wheels is a no-cost program that has been funded by Berwick Area United Way since it's inception, 30 years ago. This program brings the collection of the McBride Memorial Library to people who are not able to visit the library in person. Books on Wheels makes regular visits to assisted living and nursing homes, day care centers and preschools, and private homes on a regular basis.

Books on Wheels helps the Berwick Area United Way achieve some of it's educational mission.  T he program allows participants who are homebound to receive their weekly library book without leaving the comfort of their home.  The library staff gets to know their clients and helps pick out their next book by tracking already read books and exploring new options and releases.   Books on Wheels also travels to Day Care Centers where they may perform story time or rotate books from a small "library" on the premises.  There have been numerous studies showing the power of reading at a young age contributing to higher achievement levels throughout grade school and higher graduation rates.

Books are important at any age and the Books on Wheels program provides educational access to people of all ages.  To learn more about this program and how you can participate, please visit their website .

Shippensburg Produce and Outreach

Shippensburg Produce and Outreach (SPO) is a faith-based nonprofit that provides fresh vegetables, fruits, eggs, milk and other healthy items to those in the Shippensburg community who qualify.

SPO distributes produce and other fresh items every Tuesday to  over 500 families each month in the Shippensburg community. SPO also participates in other outreach programs throughout the Shippensburg Area School District.  This unique organization aims to provide healthy food choices to meet the nutritional needs of those who qualify for assistance in the community.  SPO targets working families facing food insecurities, those with mental/physical disabilities, and the senior population.

SPO receives donations from farms that "plant a row" to be donated from their current crop.  They also work with local orchards and berry farms in the community.  In addition to providing fresh products, SPO also shares recipes and knowledge on how to prepare the produce.
