CTC Global's ACCC® Conductor Becomes the First Conductor in History to Receive 3rd Party Certification for Energy Efficiency and CO2 Emission Reductions

CTC Global ACCC conductor is the first electric transmission conductor in history to earn SCS certification for CO2 emission reductions resulting from improved energy efficiency.  SCS Global Services (SCS) verified that ACCC conductor reduces CO2 emissions associated with transmission line losses by 27 to 31 percent under certain design conditions compared to conventional steel reinforced ACSR conductors, the 100-year old technology currently used in most electric transmission and distribution power lines.

Tobias Schultz, Manager of Corporate Sustainability Services at SCS stated: "SCS Global's Certification of ACCC conductor creates significant new opportunities for corporate and governmental entities seeking to reduce greenhouse gas emissions for regulatory or voluntary purposes. Certification allows transmission owning electric utilities and developers to evaluate and quantify CO 2 emission reductions associated with using ACCC conductor in place of less efficient ASCR conductor, and to explore pathways for monetizing those reductions or using them to meet regulatory obligations."

SCS is a trusted and neutral global leader with more than three decades of experience in third-party environmental, sustainability and certification, auditing, testing and standards development. SCS also certified  Conductor Comparison Program tool as a valid way to estimate reductions in line losses and associated CO2 emissions achieved by installing ACCC conductor in lieu of traditional ACSR conductor. Both SCS certifications were conducted in accordance with ISO 14044:2006 standard for Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), a methodology used for evaluating the environmental performance of various products.

SCS Global's Certification Assessment of the ACCC conductor considered a range of conductor sizes, line lengths and voltages representing a number of project types in countries such as the U.S., Indonesia, Germany, India and Chile that have varied grid mixes and associated emission factors.

ANDE Completes 8th ACCC Conductor Installation in Paraguay

With the support of contractor CIE S.A. Paraguay, ANDE - Administracion Nacional de Electricidad, completed their 8th ACCC® conductor installation in Paraguay. The 45 kilometer double circuit 220 kV line upgrade utilized existing structures and insulators. Brussels size ACCC conductor, manufactured by Lamifil was installed on 35 meter tall structures with 350 meter span lengths. Hardware for the project was provided by Preformed Line Products.

ANDE selected the 832 kcmil (421.4 mm^2) Brussels size ACCC conductor to replace old ACAR conductor to improve line efficiency and capacity. Some sections of the installation required the installation of temporary platforms to support installation equipment and protect wetlands. To further mitigate environmental impact in one area six reels of ACCC conductor were pulled in back to back covering over 14 kilometers.

Learn why modernizing the electric power grid with ACCC conductor is a cheaper way to reduce CO2 emissions than replacing old fashioned light bulbs.

CTC Global's high-capacity, high-efficiency ACCC conductors offers one of the most cost-effective means of reducing fuel consumption and associated emissions, while also increasing grid capacity to support the deployment of more clean renewable energy.

Let's consider an example based on a recently completed American Electric Power project in Texas. Looking at a 100 mile section of 345 kV line designed to carry 3,000 amps with a load factor of 62%, the use of CTC Global's Drake size (double bundled) ACCC conductor would reduce line losses by 30% compared to an equally sized ACSR Drake conductor. This translates into a savings of 300,000 MWh per year.

For comparison, consider the energy savings offered by a 100 watt equivalent LED light bulb replacement. The LED light bulb reduces electrical consumption by around 80% compared to a standard incandescent light bulb. Translated, the use of 12.5 LED bulbs would save 1 kWh of electricity per hour. 12,500 LED bulbs would therefore save 1 MWh. If we assume a 4 hour per day / 365 day per year light bulb utilization, it would take 2,568,493 LED bulbs to save 300,000 MWh of electricity.

At a cost of $20 per LED bulb, the energy savings would translate into a capital cost of $51,369,863. READ MORE...

ACCC Conductor Installations Continue Globally

In addition to the series of ACCC projects recently started in Croatia, other greenfield projects and reconductor projects continue  in Indonesia, Malaysia, India and Scotland, and other locations. These projects will be discussed in upcoming newsletters and in various magazine articles and technical papers.
