This Week's Dvar Torah:  "Yaakov Remains Alone"
In this week's parsha, The Torah says that Yaakov battled with a mysterious 'Ish' [man], who Chazal tell us was Eisav's guardian angel, who was also the embodiment of the Evil Inclination (Yetzer HaRah) and the Satan. The Medrash here in Bereshis Rabbah associates the pasuk describing Yaakov's battle with Eisav's angel, with the pasuk in Parshas Zos HaBracha "There is none like G-d O Jeshurun, a rider of the heavens at your assistance, and in His majesty, the skies." [Devorim 33:26]. The Medrash expounds homiletically: "Eyn k'Kel" means there is no one like G-d. But who IS like G-d? Yeshurun (Israel) is like G-d! There are members of Klal Yisrael (the Jewish people) who are similar to the Almighty. In what way?

Brachos 41a
"Blessings From Heaven"

(Rabbi Yaakov Berkowitz)
Brachos. We say them all the time. But are we doing it right? On this week's Amud, we go beneath the surface in the laws of reciting brachos. The gemara discusses whether one can fulfill his obligation of reciting a ha'eitz with a ha'adama or vice versa; whether a fruit from the seven species that Eretz Yisrael was praised (blessed) with comes before other food items; and where "personal favorites" stand on the food pyramid. After the dust settles, we have many categories and different opinions for what is first and what is second.     After all is said and done, there are a lot of details, and it is extremely worthwhile to learn through the laws of brachos in depth.

HALACHA: Lighting Chanukah Candles
The proper time to light Chanukah candles l'chatchillah is a subject of much halachic debate. Some are careful to light Chanukah lights right at sunset, others a little bit later, while others wait for nightfall. If you have a family custom, follow it. Otherwise, the preferred time to light is 20-25 minutes after sunset.
Where to place the first light on the menorah-at the extreme right or the extreme left. In addition, there are various customs as to which direction the lighting takes on subsequent nights-from right to left or from left to right. One who does not have a specific family custom should place the first light at the extreme right side of the menorah (facing the person who is lighting). On subsequent nights, each additional light is placed to the left of the first one, and the lighting begins from the newest light, going from left to right.
