FEATURED EVENT: Mt. Everest Climber Visits West Union
On Thursday, Oct. 19, West Union students had a rare and special opportunity to hear from a professional female mountain climber: Hilaree O'Neill. A member of National Geographic's speakers bureau, Hilaree is the first woman to have climbed both Mt. Everest and adjacent mountain Lhotse in a 24-hour period, and she has been named one of the most adventurous women in the world of sports by Outside magazine. Hilaree talked to the students about the importance of teamwork, perseverance, and believing in yourself when tackling any task or goal. She also encouraged students to be mindful of how their actions affect those around them. Following her talk, students showed Hilaree the class projects they had worked on leading up to her visit.

As young people take to the streets this Tuesday in search of Halloween treats, drivers are urged to use caution, especially in neighborhoods, and to keep a close eye out for kids. If you have kids and aren't up for the full neighborhood trek, consider taking them to downtown Hillsboro instead. Many of the downtown merchants are participating in the Safe 'N Sane Halloween event from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. If the candy scene has you feeling tricked, consider making one of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation's eight
Healthy Halloween recipes and sharing a picture on Facebook or Twitter using #SweeterStudents for a chance to win one of 50 Target gift cards for $500.
