The conclusion of first semester is quickly approaching, and I enthusiastically invite you to attend the upcoming holiday events on campus with your family. From music to theatre programs, these festive opportunities showcase our student talent and are sure to fill you with the holiday spirit.

Academically, this month also signals preparation for final exams. Lake Park's Curriculum Council has dedicated much discussion to reviewing the focus of and format for semester exams. The most noticeable change is the reduction to a two-day schedule that occurs on Thursday, December 15 and Friday, December 16.

In the exam feedback surveys that were administered following spring 2016 semester exams, students and faculty shared the opinion that there was too much "down time" during the three days devoted to exams. Curriculum Council took this feedback to heart and decided to return a day to the calendar for additional instruction, an additional day for performance-based assessment, or other constructive learning experiences.

Since many academic departments have diminished or eliminated traditional semester exams in favor of capstone projects, presentations and performance-based assessments, Curriculum Council believes that time is available during the two days to administer exams without overburdening students in a shortened exam window.

We have begun communicating this change with our families and have included convenient links to the fact sheet and the modified exam schedule. Next week, students will hear more about this model in SSPs conducted lunch periods on each campus. Students are encouraged to ask their teachers about any questions they have regarding exam days.

Thank you for your involvement and support during my first semester as Principal. It is truly my privilege to work with our students, staff and families each day, and I look forward to what we can accomplish together in 2017. Wishing you all a happy holiday season!

Athletic and Activities Conference Affiliation Information
Lake Park High School is proud to announce a partnership agreement with Batavia, Geneva, Glenbard North, St. Charles East, St. Charles North, Wheaton North, and Wheaton Warrenville South High Schools to form a new athletic and activities conference beginning in the 2018-2019 school year. The ultimate goal of all schools through this partnership is to provide positive experiences for our students through rigorous academic, athletic, and activities programming. The communities of these school districts will also benefit from the close geographic proximity of the member schools, creating exciting rivalries and spirited environments at conference events. In an era of conference unrest that has seen many long-time conferences change, the schools felt the formation of a new eight team conference afforded the greatest opportunity for long-term conference stability.

Lake Park would like to acknowledge and thank our current partners from the Dupage Valley Conference (DVC) for their patience and support during the process. We greatly appreciate the personal and professional relationships that have been fostered through our partnerships with these schools. It is our great desire that these will continue after which time we are no longer member schools of the same conference.
Social Studies Movie Night Series Continues December 7
Make plans to attend the the next screening in the "Social Studies Movie Night" series on Wednesday, December 7 at 6:00 p.m. in the West Campus auditorium.

Students, families and community members are invited to this free screening and discussion. Extra credit will be available. Students will have the opportunity to analyze the identity of the Navy and the Armed Forces put forth in the film, in addition to the importance of teamwork in the nation's most elite fighter pilot school for the extra credit.

Watch for more movies during second semester!
Spirit of Excellence Nominations Available
Spirit of Excellence Logo The Lake Park High School Educational Foundation is pleased to announce that it is accepting nominations for this year's Spirit of Excellence awards. Parents and community members may nominate students, faculty members, and staff members for these prestigious awards. To qualify, a student must be a current senior who demonstrates the qualities of the Ideal Lake Park Graduate. Faculty and staff members who have made outstanding contributions to Lake Park may also be nominated.  Nomination forms are now available via the website. Nominations are due January 9, 2017.

If you have questions regarding the nomination process and wish to submit your nominations, contact Becky Wyatt, executive director of the Lake Park Foundation, at (630) 295-5264 or via email.
Outstanding Fees?
As a reminder, Lake Park offers online convenience for families to check the status of outstanding fees and make payments directly. When the Home Access Center is utilized to check grades, parents may notice an amount appearing in the upper right-hand corner. Outstanding fees are displayed in red.

Families who are in need of fee waivers or a deferred payment plan should have already made arrangements this summer during the registration process. If your financial circumstances have changed, please contact the Principal's office at the appropriate campus.

The Board of Education has recently been discussing the District's intention to increase communication efforts with families who have outstanding fees. Beginning in January 2017, families will be notified via a progressive email campaign about the need to make payments or the outstanding fees will be sent to a collection agency.

It is important to make timely payments each semester to avoid the compounding effect for your family and for the District. Parents are strongly encouraged to check their status and make payments directly by the end of this calendar year.
Flags for Roselle Campaign
Looking for a unique holiday gift idea? Residents of Roselle can consider a $40 annual subscription to have a 3x5-foot American flag installed in their front yard during four legal holidays:
Memorial Day, May 29, 2017
Flag Day, June 14, 2017
Independence Day, July 4, 2017
Veterans' Day, November 11, 2017

This unique community activity represents the collaborative effort of Roselle's History Museum, the American Legion Post 1084, and Lake Park High School.  Students and volunteers will install the flags early in the morning and remove at dusk the same day.  Please read an important disclaimer.

Subscribers may pay cash, write a check, or pay online. Checks should be made payable to the Roselle Historical Foundation and mailed to 39 E. Elm St., Roselle, IL 60172. Deadline for this inaugural program is April 1, 2017. Visit www.flagsforroselle.weebly.com for more information.

Students will "build" the flags in the Lake Park Innovation Center. Volunteers are needed for installing and removing the flags and for subscription sales. For more information about volunteer opportunities, email [email protected] with "Flag Program" in the subject line.

As a thank you to subscribers, the American Legion will provide instructions on the proper care and display of the flag, as well as saluting the flag.
