OUR 2017-2018 SCHOOL YEAR BEGINS
WELCOME BACK VANDERHEYDEN STUDENTS!

Welcome students and Team Members to the First Day of Class at the Richard A. Desrochers Educational Center!

Here's our President and CEO Karen Carpenter Palumbo greeting and handing out goody bags to all who entered our Wynantskill campus.

VANDERHEYDEN'S 185TH ANNIVERSARY!
Stay tuned to our social media sites to find out about upcoming celebrations for our 185th year!

In 2018, Vanderheyden will commemorate 185 years of providing services to thousands of youth, individuals and families.

Our primary mission is: to empower youth, adults, and families to build brighter futures.

Most of the individuals have had more challenges and trauma in their lives than you can imagine.  Everyone deserves a second chance to overcome adversity and become an          independent, contributing member of society.

To commemorate our 185 years and reflect on Vanderheyden's rich history beginning with the success of the Troy Orphan Asylum in Troy, New York, we are inviting 185 individuals to kick-off our celebration by becoming a member of the "1833 Society" with a donation of $1,833, to honor the year our organization was formed.

Our hope is that you will join in as someone that makes a future impact
in the Vanderheyden legacy to change lives to save lives.

THANK YOU PHOENIX VOLUNTEERS
GREAT JOB BY PHOENIX, A NASSAU RE COMPANY!

Phoenix, A Nassau Re Company in East Greenbush, went above and beyond in their volunteer day on Friday, September 8th, at our Wynantskill campus!

Every single window sparkles because of their efforts! We appreciate all that your company has done for us!

AFTER A DAY OF APPLE PICKING!

Fall is on the way, and so is apple picking time!
Our individuals love the chance to explore the community and meet new friends!

GIVING BACK VANDERHEYDEN STYLE

Mary S. is just such a joy to be around. She also loves to give back to the community.

Mary, who lives in Albany County, is part of Vanderheyden's Day Habilitation Without Walls program for the past two years.

As one of ten individuals in the program, Mary gets to explore the Capital Region, while accumulating a portfolio of new and different experiences.

One of Mary's favorite places to visit is Atria Assisted Living in Albany. Every Monday, Mary's group visits the senior citizens, which she loves to do.

"We do arts and crafts and color, and play Uno," Mary said.

Mary even loves just stopping by to say 'hi' to her favorite residents.

Volunteering is another big component of the Day Hab program.

On Wednesdays, Mary is busy at the Salvation Army, where her group straightens out clothing, learns about pricing items, and, finds bargains galore.

"I found $60 Vera Bradley items for $14 to $15," Mary said.

Other volunteer opportunities include Meals On Wheels on Thursdays, and collecting bottles for cashing in deposits.

Since Mary is a shopaholic, and loves to give back, she shops for a woman who can't get out to do that.

Mary likes many things about the Day Hab program.

"I like to listen to everyone socialize in the van, when we are going to places, and have a good time," she said.

Joking around with everyone and making people laugh are fun things Mary likes to do.

"Mary is a resource for us. She always knows what is going on. She is always the person to go to if you need a smile," Natasha Young, Day Habilitation Specialist said. "She's always filled with warmth, and is always willing to go that extra mile for someone."

Participating in fundraisers, and bowling events, along with Vanderheyden's Turkey Trot, are occasions Mary definitely gets involved in.

Her whole family, including a brother and two sisters, are good resources for donating, too, Mary said.

"They donate clothes, they see what needs you have, and give back to the community," she said. "They donate and go out of their way to fill them."

At home, Mary's hobbies include using her own "artist studio" filled with markers, pencils and pens for her collection of adult coloring books.

She also likes to watch the news, and clean her house. In the summer, Mary said she likes to be lazy in the pool.

Thank you, Mary, for brightening up our day here at Vanderheyden!

LEVERPOINT VOLUNTEERS

Thank you to Leverpoint in Clifton Park
for spending the day clearing our Sanctuary Nature Trail at our Wynantskill campus!

We appreciate all your help, especially on the extremely hot day it was!

Team work at its finest!  Thank you!
LAURA EXPANDS HER ROLE...

Laura Clark has done a great job working with our individuals and families to obtain the benefits they deserve.

Her services will now be expanded to help our Team Members and their families in our Vanderheyden community.

Clark, who lives in Rensselaer County, holds two job titles at Vanderheyden.

She is a Medicaid Service Coordinator (MSC) and a Benefits Specialists for the Community Support Individualized Residential Alternate (CS-IRA) program.

The benefits specialist part is what Clark will be offering to our Vanderheyden community in the near future.

She will be working with Team Members and their families to apply for benefits, and also can maintain their benefits.

Our community will be able to ask Clark questions about benefits, such as Medicaid, Disability, Food Stamps, and Social Security.

"It's a complicated process, and I want to make it simple," Clark said. "Let me help you find what you are eligible for."

Team Members will be able to meet with Clark once a month, and can meet anywhere, or at her office in the Community Services wing at our main campus in Wynantskill.

Ask questions, get answers, Clark said.

Clark, who has been with Vanderheyden for over four years, has 85 clients who she helps figure out what services would work best for them, and help them apply and obtain the much-needed services.

She chose Vanderheyden to work at, after she saw the opening, and remembered how her mother enjoyed her time working here at the cottages "with good people" in the late 1980's and early 1990's.

"It's a community," Clark said. "And, it's very welcoming to everyone."

Clark also likes the whole value of Vanderheyden's Sanctuary Program.

"It puts a nice thing on this," she said. "It makes us remember to take care of ourselves, so we can help others."

In her spare time, Clark is involved in volunteer activities at East Greenbush United Methodist Church as a youth leader, and on the church's Education Committee. She also is the Director of Musicals for Sunday School.

The married mother of two also loves to make jewelry, and would like to get back doing it again.

Thank you, Laura, for helping our community thrive!
