IN THIS ISSUE...
From Our Director
You tell me which is easier, answering a Louisiana Right to Life questionnaire or casting a controversial vote on a Supreme Court justice in the U.S. Senate with the whole world watching?

This seems to be what we are dealing with in the U.S. Senate race with Mr. Foster Campbell, who did not answer our questionnaire but says publicly he is pro-life. Look, we are happy when candidates state they are pro-life. That's wonderful! But when a candidate says that, it seems answering our questionnaire, especially for a new office they have never held before, would be common-sense. Voters need to know how a candidate will vote on specifics, especially in such an important position as U.S. Senator.

For example, we ask in Question 3 of our questionnaire: "Will you... support nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court only well-qualified persons who will respect the sanctity of innocent human life...?"

It cannot get more basic than answering this question when it comes to the office of a pro-life U.S. Senator.

To all future candidates for public office: If you claim to be pro-life, answer the questionnaire! If you don't, it could be interpreted that you are trying to fool the voters. And that is never a good thing.

For a Pro-Life Louisiana,

Benjamin Clapper

Abortion Numbers Fall;
More People Pro-Life?
Abortion Numbers Continue on a Downward Trend

The number of abortions performed in the U.S. continues to decline, according to the 2013 "Abortion Surveillance Report" recently released by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Relying on reports from state health departments, the CDC reported 664,435 abortions for 2013, down more than 5 percent from the 2012 total of 699,202 and more than 9 percent from the 2011 total of 730,322. While it provides a snapshot into the downward trend in abortions, this figure does not provide a complete picture of abortion in the U.S. as it does not include abortion data from California, the nation's most populous state, New Hampshire and Maryland.

In addition to the decline in the raw numbers of abortions, the CDC finds that both the abortion rate, (the number of abortions for every 1,000 women of child-bearing age) and the abortion ratio (the number of abortions per 1,000 live births) have declined. In the states included in the report, the CDC found an abortion rate of 12.5 abortions for every 1,000 women aged 15-44. The CDC found a ratio of 200 abortions per 1,000 live births.

"The decline in the number of abortions, and in the abortion rates and ratios, is a clear indication that pregnant women are increasingly less likely to see abortion as the desired solution to an unexpected pregnancy," said Randall K. O'Bannon, Ph.D., National Right to Life director of education and research. "Right-to-life legislative, educational and outreach efforts to increase awareness of the unborn child's humanity certainly continue to play a critical role in the abortion decline."

While this is good news, there is concerning news as well. Data shows that chemical or "medical" abortions continued to rise, a clear indication that the aggressive push of these by the abortion industry and its media allies is having some impact. Though these new abortions are nowhere near as simple and safe as the promoters of the abortion pill have promised but instead have turned out to be grueling, bloody, and painful, they have enabled the industry to expand abortion to smaller, more lightly staffed locations that may not possess the medical facilities or equipment of larger clinics or doctors with the surgical training to handle chemical abortion complications or failures.

Percentage of People Calling Themselves Pro-Life Increases

A new national poll has some surprising and contradictory results when it comes to abortion, and it shows the number of people calling themselves pro-life on abortion at its highest level in two years.

The new Rasmussen survey
finds that a majority of Americans are morally opposed to abortion and that number includes a majority of women who took a position.

But the polling data also finds that a majority of people refer to themselves as pro-choice as opposed to pro-life on abortion. But with the majority of Americans say abortion is morally unacceptable the polling results clearly show that some people who consider themselves pro-choice don't really support abortion and more accurately line up with the pro-life position opposing abortion is morally unacceptable.

The Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey of 1,000 likely voters (conducted Nov. 21-22) finds that 52 percent of likely U.S. voters consider themselves pro-choice on the issue of abortion, while 42 percent say they are pro-life. The number of voters who are pro-choice is down slightly from 54 percent in April, while the number who consider themselves pro-life is at its highest level since July 2014.

From the poll:
  • 50 percent believe abortion is morally wrong most of the time, up four points from April of last year and the highest finding since mid-2014.  34 percent disagree and consider it morally acceptable in most instances, unchanged from the previous survey. A sizable 17 percent are undecided
  • Women by a 46 percent to 36 percent margin tend to see abortion as being morally wrong than acceptable most times; men feel more strongly that it is morally wrong in most cases.
