Winter 2016

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Being 'mindfully present' is something of a buzz expression now a days. Are you familiar with it? The quote I started this newsletter with indirectly references this idea. Engaging yourself in what is going on now and not letting your mind wander to what is coming up for you in the future or dwelling on the past is being 'mindfully present'.

It's easy to let yourself think about how things used to be if you're in a new situation. It's also easy to let your mind wander and think about what you want to be doing tomorrow or what you wish you could do instead of what you're doing.

When you (or I) do this you're missing out on what is happening NOW. I know when my children were small I used to wish for the time when I wouldn't need to devote so much of my attention to them. That time has come - they are both grown up and living their own lives. Unfortunately, neither of them lives nearby so I only see them a few times a year. I can tell you that when I spend time with them I am truly present.

Even though I believe it's a good idea to live in now this is not to say that day dreaming should never occur. It's wonderful to have dreams! As the quote above suggests it's a good idea to make detailed plans (hopes) for the future. Just don't spend every waking moment thinking about the future.

Having said that this is a great time as it's the last month of the year, to review what you accomplished this year. Remember to pat yourself on the back! Think about what you want to accomplish in 2017. Make a plan. You may want to set a series of small monthly goals instead of one big goal for the entire year.

Enjoy this holiday season. Live in the now and take some 'me' time to day dream about the possibilities for the year to come.

I wish you all a very Happy Holiday Season!
