MS Forum Time, this morning December 1!

The 8th grade students cooperatively created their own modern adaptations of "The Crucible," and performed their play for the MS community!

Science Fair on January 23, 2017
Do you love experimenting or testing your ideas about scientific phenomena? Let us be part of your experiment and turn that into a science fair project and share what you learn with our community. Find a topic that interests you and that you are curious about, develop a testable question, create an experiment and repeat it multiple times! Don't forget to collect your results and then present all your findings on a display board. Make sure to bring the project to the auditorium on Monday, January 23rd, 2017. If you have questions or would like to see an example of a completed project,
contact Echo Jacoway or Anne-Laure Denis.

3rd Grade Forum
With over 35 nationalities and going at SDFAS, learning Geography can tend to be easier than most, since families come from all over the world! All we really need is to talk about where we are going to go on a trip and let it all unroll in our imaginations! This is what the 3rd graders did today at the Forum when they got up and talked about the countries, cities and states they came from. From Asia to America through Africa, we all traveled in our minds and visited one continent then another while listening to Mariachis, Frank Sinatra or "yodeling".

Emotional skills
Kindergarten students are studying the different types of human emotions in order to be able to address emotional situations better. Using playdough, they will actually add the different emotions to a blank face. In this manner, they will be able to memorize and recognize their friends' feelings and react better with knowledge when playing together.

Hand washing presentation in Preschool
Molly, the SDFAS nurse presented handwashing and hygiene information in all the Preschool and Kindergarten classes. She taught the children why we wash our hands and how often we should.
The children learned that a good way to be sure your hands are well washed is by singing Happy Birthday to you all along the process.

Thank you Molly!

The Food Drive 2016: It's a success!
Le Food Drive : C'est un succès !
Picture: the boxes that will be donated and some of our class delegates.

To all students and families, let us say thank you for your participation to the Food Drive this year. The SDFAS community has collected enough supplies to fill all five boxes for Feed America San Diego. We are excited to mention that we even had to add two medium boxes for some extra items. The total is six large boxes weighting over 1,050 pounds of food. Encore merci à tous !
7th grade and PK2 collaborate for the Winter Show
La collaboration entre 5èmes et moyenne section pour le spectacle d'hiver

Marion Addo, French Language and Literature teacher from the 7th and 8th grades is providing Middle School students with the opportunity to interact with younger students in PK2 classes. She believes that building bridges between big kids and small kids play an important part in developing stronger ties within the school community.  The 7th graders went  in the PK2 classroom and helped their younger fellow students explore the four elements of the Earth.

"I like stone because it's the hardest," says one girl. "Clay is the most beautiful, but chalk is the most colorful," added another one. "Dirt is important; it's where plants grow!" explains a little boy.

During the activity, students connected with each other while enjoying games and working together.

Inspired from this collection of spontaneous and genuine interactions and words, a play will be written and performed at the winter show, "The Joy of Being Together."

Thank you, PK2 teacher and students, for welcoming us in your classroom!

ÉDITO

Our community is special for so many reasons. Perhaps one of the most obvious is the interplay of a variety of influences in both the education and after school activities. SDFAS life is rich with diversity. With events like the Marché de Noël, we have the opportunity to bring a European tradition to the mountaintop of La Jolla. It truly is a mix and match of beauty and yet another example of our commitment to being an international school.

We are also special in the sense that our Marché de Noel is not a fundraiser but simply a means for us to support local artisans and to host an entrepreneurial and community event. Our own kids and teachers host stands alongside hand-picked vendors from the greater San Diego community. The sole purpose of the Marché de Noël is to have fun and to support local businesses. This makes it a truly unique event.

Please let your friends and family know about it! As a parent, it is your privilege to share these kinds of exceptional moments with those you care about. Show off our school and come to celebrate and ring in the holidays on our campus!

Friday December 9th, 2016 / 2-6 p.m

Lydia Inostroza
Parent Association President
Chair of the Marché de Noël

Chers parents,

Clay projet in PK2
Projet avec de la terre en Moyenne Section

After studying the worldwide known album: "Les trois petits cochons/The three little pigs", the PK2 students learned how to model a pig face using clay. Through this activity, a lot of skills were involved, such as rolling, pressing, shaping, adding small parts, and most importantly: waiting until the clay is dry!
Stay tuned: we will be soon moving on to glazing, another very exciting step!
Discovery the forest in Kindergarten A
La découverte de la forêt en Grande Section A

Pictured: Jacob and Anders.

Preliminary work: We studied the photo-book:"Le cartable qui fait atchoum".
We learned many things: First, some new vocabulary, we then discovered the animals that live in it and what they are called.
Secondly, we sorted out all the items found in the forest: leaves, branches, pieces of bark, pine cones...just to name a few.
After forming working groups, we created our own forest inside each box. Our next step will be to model some animals of the forest with play dough. Those animals will become the base for us to start building our "story-box" and make our creations come alive using our "forests in a box".
Field trip to Botanical Gardens
Sortie scolaire au jardin Botanique

The Kindergarten students went to the Botanical Gardens as part of their study on the germination and gardening processes. The children discovered a myriad of plants and trees. They learned the difference between a plant and a tree and discovered how useful needles can be for some trees. The students also had the opportunity to smell some delightful tropical fruits and aromatic herbs. As the rain was with us for a big part of the day, the students also had the chance to feel and smell what it may be like to be in the rainforest.
