What We've Been Up To
A Day in the Office with Lisa

The Partnership office phone rings alot lately. It's for Lisa, our new Transportation Coordinator. She's talking to transportation companies and case managers, trying to make connections that will help people get to medical appointments, visitation, counseling, and family support service appointments. She wields a powerful smart phone and is lightning fast with the fax! Logging every call, checking for trip completions, and evaluating efforts is the name of the game. Starting in September she helped 6 clients, with 17 trips completed. In October there were 9 clients served and 24 trips completed. November saw an increase that is more than double the initial numbers with 15 clients and 58 trips completed. Lisa expects that the coming months will only prove to be more busy than ever. Thanks to a contract with Tioga County Department of Human Services, this service is being made possible and is helping to tackle transportation issues in our rural county.

Immunization Workgroup expanding their mission to include Safe Kids initiative

Recently, the Tioga County Partnership partnered with local departments and organizations, such as Maternal Family Health Services, to offer successful car seat safety checks. These events were well received by community members and sparked a new discussion at Immunization Workgroup meetings. Since then, the Immunization Workgroup (IWG) of the Tioga County Partnership decided on a change to their mission to accomodate the Safe Kids initiative.  This initiative works to  reduce injuries from motor vehicles, sports, drownings, falls, burns, poisonings and more.  The mission expansion is a nod to retired workgroup, Community Health Awareness: Kids First Committee from which the ever popular Children's Health Fair + Family Activity Day originated. It has since grown immensely under the planning, coordination, and fundraising efforts of the Wellsboro Chamber of Commerce with help from the Wellsboro Montessori Children's Center, and the Tioga County Partnership.  The  dedicated IWG volunteers whose backgrounds include epidemiology, nutrition, disease and injury prevention, and a lifetime of work in the healthcare sector as registered nurses and health-related organization supervisors, collectively decided that a full time focus on child injury prevention was a necessary addition that  will  go along with their mission to protect people from preventable diseases through immunization.

While the workgroup's mission will expand to accommodate the Safe Kids initiative, immunizations will remain an important central focus. As of late there has been a resurgence of preventable diseases due to anti-immunization sentiments that have circulated in the US. The risk for contracting these preventable diseases has increased and so it is dually important for the group's immunization work to continue. The group is gaining new members and is excited to charge forward in their work to improve quality of life for all Tioga County residents with their new expanded focus.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Why is this a valuable tool for my organization?

The rural and geographically separated nature of our Tioga County community acts as an information barrier. If we can all find information more readily, residents will be more aware and have easier access to services that could potentially better their quality of life. Organizations will benefit from gaining an awareness of other potential collaborators and be able to use the directory as a tool to focus their services toward unaddressed issues.

How is this different from other directories?

This directory is specific to Tioga County and highlights many local organizational volunteer opportunities as well as less formal services. Volunteers can get plugged-in to a local cause that piques their interest and helps their hometown.
