AIA Michigan
July  2017

Champion the profession. Nurture our chapters. Build Michigan better.
President's Message

I'll keep this very short this month since like me, most of you are either on vacation, just returning, or just about to leave.

First, congratulations once again to all of our awardees and honorees we celebrated with at our annual awards event at the Roostertail last month. It was really encouraging to see such a great turnout and to admire the broad cross section of awardees and great design work.  And thanks to Cathy and Evelyn and the Honor Awards Committee for putting on a great program.

Secondly, if you have not voted already, I strongly encourage you to vote on the proposed Bylaws Amendments, which you should have received by e-mail on July 7 th. These are not momentous changes, but the Board of Directors is recommending that you vote for all three amendments, which will help us to strengthen the effectiveness of the Board in representing you and the profession.

I hope to see you soon in Mackinac!

Will Wittig, AIA

Emerging Professionals Corner
Samantha Szeszulski, Associate AIA
I hear often from our Associate members how intimidated they are to start taking the Architecture Registrations Exams. The reasoning is usually "I don't know where to start," or "I don't have time, I'm too busy." Since I've started taking my exams (ARE 5.0) just over six months ago, with every "pass" I've shared, I've had several people ask me to share my advice or insight into the exams; To answer the questions on where to start or how to find time. The best advice I can give is "Just start."

It may not be the "right" place, or the "best" study method, the "most effective", but let me tell you, it's better than nothing. And so far, it has worked out well for me.  I'm half way there, with three passes under my belt. I don't have any game changing advice that will solve the issue of time, or knowing where to start. My approach is to start from the beginning (Practice Management) and schedule the exam (about a month out). If you're anything like me, knowing that you have that deadline looming will keep you motivated to study (even if you procrastinate it until the last week).

If affording study materials is an issue, check out the free Quizlet app, and the study sets that have already been created for the ARE exams.
