Humanitarian Response and Disaster Management Course Now Open
Dr. Carlo Salvinelli will be offering
Humanitarian Response and Disaster Management
this fall. The course is scheduled on Tues/Thurs at 12:30 to 1:45 pm has on campus and distance education sections (where students "attend" class from off-campus), and is available at graduate (CVEN 5837) and undergraduate (CVEN 4837) levels.
The course will give an overview of the main principles, standards, and key stakeholders involved in humanitarian response and will analyze the different phases of disaster and crisis management. For more details, see the

Congrats to Aaron Opdyke, PhD
Soon-to-be PhD graduate Aaron Opdyke has accepted a position as a Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Program Officer with the Peace Corps Response in the Philippines. It's a 7 month position where he'll be working with a local municipality on disaster risk reduction programs. This assignment will give him the opportunity to put his research to work!

USAID/OFDA Shelter And Settlements Training Course
This course introduces the basics of humanitarian community shelter and settlements (S&S) activities, including some history and trends related to the sector, best practices in assessments and programming strategy, basic shelter responses, the relationship between shelter and its context (settlements), and how to promote the recovery of affected settlements. SPHERE Handbook Revision Workshop

The Sphere Handbook is one of the most widely known and internationally recognized sets of common principles and universal minimum standards in humanitarian response. This workshop, hosted by MCEDC, will provide a forum for humanitarian practitioners and academics to provide input for the 2018 revised Sphere Handbook and standards. Doctoral Fellowship, Joint Centre for Disaster Research
A PhD research scholarship is available in a non-traditional sources of data (i.e. social media) for impact modelling and evaluation of disaster events. The Joint Centre for Disaster Research (JCDR) is awarding a 3-year PhD Scholarship for late 2017 - 2020. The scholarship is available to the students of all nationalities. The starting date is any time from September to December 2017.

Through the Virtual Student Foreign Service (VSFS) program, students can work on projects that advance the work of government on multiple fronts. Projects include helping counter violent extremism, strengthening human rights monitoring, developing virtual programs, engaging in digital communications, mapping, economic and political reporting, data analysis, graphic design, and app building. These are unpaid internships and applications are due July 26, 2017.
