Dear Delone Catholic Families,
Praised be Jesus Christ! Our mission statement claims to challenge our students "spiritually, academically, physically, socially and aesthetically," so I thought that, at the end of our first quarter, it would be a good time to reflect on where we have been these past nine weeks.
Spiritually, our students have been very active, completing their works of mercy, raising funds for the school through the magazine drive and other campaigns, contributing to hurricane relief, collecting care packages for chemotherapy patients, donating blood to the Red Cross, helping out at the Adams County Rescue Mission, and supporting the Adopt-a-Highway Project and the Tender Care Pregnancy Center. Recently our students featured prominently at the Bishop's Rosary Rally and many will soon be making a pilgrimage to the National Shrine in Washington, DC. I also have had the privilege of joining our students in our monthly liturgies, participating with them on their class retreats at the Mother Seton Shrine and Mount Saint Mary's, and dialoguing with them one on one about their experiences as a Delone Catholic.
Academically, we hosted the Pennsylvania Catholic College Fair and have had numerous representatives from other colleges make presentations to our upperclassmen. Our sophomores and juniors successfully completed their PSAT, freshmen had the opportunity to complete a career interest inventory, various classes have engaged in off-campus field studies, our Virtual High School program is up and running as well as our Instructional Support Program, and our Math, English and National Honor Societies held their annual inductions. Report cards should be coming out within a week or so and we hope that our students' diligence will be reflected in their results.
Physically,
our Squires are having an excellent showing! Boys' Cross Country won the Division Three championship going 6-0 in the division; the girls' squad finished 5-1 in the division to take second place and we excitedly await our district championships to be held this Saturday at Big Spring High School.
Our f
ootball team is currently 6-2 with senior night tonight against York County School of Technology with one more game against Hanover. The team is currently ranked third in District 3, with the top two teams advancing to playoffs.
Our
golf team finished 5th in Division 3 with three students qualified for the YAIAA playoff and one advancing to Districts.
Girls' Soccer finished the regular season with a 12-2 record, making them the co-champions of Division 3 with Fairfield. The squad qualified for the YAIAA playoffs and secured the 3rd seed in the District Playoffs, hosting Lancaster Mennonite on Saturday on JT Flaherty Field.
Girls' Tennis went 11-2 overall and were the Division Two champions, winning the YAIAA championship for AA in singles and in doubles. Two players qualified for the State Playoffs starting November 3rd, the first time Delone Catholic will be represented in the State tournament for tennis.
In
volleyball, the Black and Gold went undefeated in the regular season going 15-0 and won the Division Three title. The squad took second place in the YAIAA tournament and will start District playoffs on Thursday, November 2, with a time and location to be determined. Our Boys' Soccer and Field Hockey Teams may not have had as stellar a season as some of their fellow classmates but, what they may have lacked in goals, they certainly made up for in attitude, determination, and sheer hard work. It was a pleasure to watch them battle on their respective fields.
Socially, I would have to say that the climax of the marking period was Spirit Week and Homecoming. Our Pep Rally far surpassed any one in which I have participated in thirty years of education, the Homecoming game was certainly an exciting nail-biter to the bitter end, and at the Dance everyone shed at least five pounds in sheer sweat (yes, I agree, we do need air-conditioning in the gym!). I had the honor of meeting many of our outstanding alumni, especially the members of the Class of 1967, receiving their Golden Diplomas as they celebrated their 50th reunion, and sharing Mass and breakfast with them the following morning. Squire Spirit is definitely on the rise and I hope that many families come to get a taste of it at our Open House this Sunday from noon to three. Please get the word out to your friends!
Aesthetically, the highlight of the year so far has to be the official dedication of the renovated 1955 Wing by His Excellency Bishop Gainer. As our guest speaker commented, and our Bishop reiterated, the work was completed under cost and ahead of schedule. I know that all our staff, and our students as well, are enjoying the creature comforts of a working environment that is most conducive to learning. Plans are already being undertaken to determine the next phase of improvements to Delone Catholic High School so that our community will continue to graduate and "inspire students to experience Jesus Christ personally and to 'Be Doers of the Word.'"

As principal of Delone Catholic High School, I wholeheartedly encourage our alumni to come back and visit their alma mater. We are obviously anxious to learn how you are doing and how your education at Delone has impacted your life choices. Given the times we live in, however, we have to be prudent regarding our students' safety and their (and their teachers') instructional time. As we move forward into the holiday season, I would ask that visiting alumni always enter the building through the main entrance and sign in at the main office. Preferred visiting times would be during lunch or at the end of the school day when teachers are available to meet their guests. Alumni are also encouraged to call ahead and set up an appointment so that they know that the person or persons they want to see are free. Thank you for complying with this request. Go, Squires!

Sophomore Class Fundraiser - Chick-fil-A
|
This year the Sophomore class will be selling 2018 Chick-fil-A calendars for $10. Each month there is a special promotion for calendar holders to redeem at any Chick-fil-A location. If anyone is interested in purchasing a Chick-fil-A meal calendar please see any sophomore. The fundraiser will run through Friday November 3rd. All orders and monies should be turned into Mr. Staub Rm. 17.

Interact Club Pit Beef/Pork/Turkey Fundraiser - Nov. 4
|
The Delone Catholic High School Interact Club will be sponsoring a pit beef/ pork/turkey fundraiser on Saturday, November 4th from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM, at the Delone Catholic High School parking lot on South Street. Little Everett's BBQ has been contracted to supply the food. Sandwich $8, Fries $3, Drink $1; Meal Deal $11. Hog Wings and Bake Goods will also be available.
All profits from the fundraiser will be donated to the Hanover Area Council of Churches Provide-a-Lunch (PAL) Program. The PAL Program provides a hot meal to the less fortunate in our community. Please come out and support this worthy cause!

SAT Math Preparation Course
|
The Mathematics Department is offering a six-session
SAT Math
Prep
course (for the new
SAT) this fall from
3-5 p.m. at Delone Catholic High School. The dates for the class are Nov. 16, Nov. 21, Nov. 28, Nov. 30, Dec. 5 and Dec. 7 .

There are free, online resources available to students to help them to prepare for the SAT and ACT. College Board has partnered with Khan Academy to provide preparation videos, instruction, problems and sample tests for the SAT. To access these materials, visit

PTO Help Needed - Raffle Ticket Sales After Masses

The PTO is looking to find parents of the local parishes to assist us with selling tickets one weekend after mass at the local churches. It will be either the first or the second weekend of November depending on the parish and approval. If you could assist us with either selling the tickets or coordinating others of the parish to help that would be wonderful. Nov. 1 and remain in Our Lady, Queen of Peace Chapel for the month of November.

Fireside Catholic Publishing Essay Contest
|
One member of the senior class may represent Delone Catholic for the chance to win one of five $1,000 cash awards as part of the Fireside Essay Scholarship Competition. Those who are interested in entering should write a 750-word essay on how their religious education is influencing their lives. Entries should be submitted to Mrs. Heberling or Mrs. Phenicie no later than Nov. 15. A winner will be chosen by a panel of faculty and then submitted to Fireside Publishing. Friends of Delone Catholic High School: On the first Tuesday of every month, we will meet at 9:30 a.m. in the Delone Catholic chapel to say a rosary for our students, faculty, staff and administration. Everyone is welcome. If you have a special intention we can pray for, but you cannot attend, feel free to send a note into the office. We will be keeping everyone in our Delone Catholic community in our prayers. Take a brief moment out of your week to join us in asking Our Lady to intercede on our behalf. Pilgrimage to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception - Nov. 3

Join your peers for a pilgrimage on Nov. 3 to the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. There will be a private tour, Fr. Fischer will say Mass in one of the chapels and we will pray a Rosary for all the intentions we will bring with us. Cost is $25 and space is limited. Contact Mrs. Phenicie for more information.

SportsLeader Virtue of the Week
|
One pillar of the SportsLeader program is a weekly virtue that we incorporate into our athletic practices and throughout our school community. Every week, we will share them here to encourage the students to take the virtue into their homes as well!
This week, our community has been focusing on the virtue of stamina - the strength to do something for a long time. Stamina is one of the hardest things to build. It takes so much time and sacrifice but once you have it, it is a priceless tool that everyone needs to excel. Stamina is not just for sports or exercise. We need stamina to be great parents, great employees, great citizens. This week, resolve to finish something that you started - finish reading a book that you started, finish a project you said you would get done but never did - and finish with stamina.

Ticket Entrances to Delone Catholic Football Games
|
After meeting with the Chief of the McSherrystown Police Department to improve safety and security by reducing access points at Delone Catholic HS athletic events, the ticket boot closest to the intersection of South Street and South 6th Street will no longer be open for admission to home football games.
We kindly ask that guests use one of the two entrances still available along Delone Avenue or the ticket booth next to the concession stand along side of South Street. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Special Military Veterans Day Breakfast - Nov. 12

All active, discharged or retired military will be honored for their service and receive a 50% discount on their breakfast on Sun., Nov. 12 from 7 a.m. to noon. at the St. Joseph's Parish Center, 44 Frederick St., Taneytown, Md. All veterans are invited to
bring their military memorabilia (photos, uniforms, etc.) for head table display and, if able, wear their military uniform.

Pumpkin Pie Run to Benefit Tommy Laudani
|
 Join us for a field run around the perimeter of Providence Community Church's new property, 6146 Road in Spring Grove, Pa. Wear your trail shoes and be prepared to get dirty on this 5k that will include varied terrains such as farm fields, grass and dirt. All participants will receive pumpkin pie at the finish line!
Proceeds from The Pumpkin Pie Run 2017 will benefit Delone Catholic HS student Tommy Laudani. Tommy is 17 years old and was diagnosed with DSRCT, a very rare and agressive form of cancer, last November. Since then he has undergone extensive chemotherapy and treatments. At the end of September, he had his third major surgery at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York.
Tommy has a passion for running! He has been on Delone Catholic's Cross Country team for three years and has participated in four years of Track and Field.
