Maddie Rennie Among Elite Players Over Thanksgiving Weekend

Over Thanksgiving weekend, Maddie Rennie was at a training event described below which has been attended by many national team members in their youth soccer years.

Maddie, who plays for the Classics Eagles U18 Red,  is a sophomore at St. Francis DeSales High School, and has verbally committed to playing soccer at the University of Kentucky.  Maddie was selected to represent Region II at the US Youth Soccer Inter-Regional Olympic Development Program event over the Thanksgiving holiday. Congratulations!

Here is an excerpt for US Youth Soccer Press release:

FRISCO, Texas (Oct. 20, 2016) - US Youth Soccer is proud to announce the schedule for the annual US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (US Youth Soccer ODP) Girls Thanksgiving Interregional, set to take place Nov. 18-25 at Spanish River Athletic Park and Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla. Participating teams will be comprised of elite players in the 1999-2003 age groups, from each of the four US Youth Soccer Regions.
The event will feature more than 350 of the nation's top players selected from US Youth Soccer State Association and Regional level evaluations. In each age group, players will attend scheduled training sessions and also compete in matches against each of the other regional teams. Additionally, each team in the 2000 age group will compete against the U.S. Under-14 Girls National Team.

The US Youth Soccer ODP Girls Thanksgiving Interregional annually attracts well over 100 college coaches, as well as several U.S. Soccer scouts. The talent on display from each team allows coaches and scouts to evaluate players in an environment similar to what they will face at the next level of play.

Historically, the US Youth Soccer ODP Girls Thanksgiving Interregional has featured many of the players who have gone on to represent the United States at the international level. Of the 40 players who have been called in to the U.S. Women's National Team in 2016, 33 participated in the Thanksgiving Interregional during their youth careers.
Taking Advantage of Opportunities
By Glen Tourville, Senior Director

One of the best and most effective ways to develop as a soccer player is taking advantage of opportunities that come your way. I did this as I player and I can share that it enabled me to play in college and professionally because of the additional growth that took place outside of my primary team experience.
  • Attending sessions with other teams and genders
  • Guest playing with other teams (above and below age group, and above and below current competitive level)
  • Gain insights from other coaches
  • Challenges and insights from other players
  • A role change with another team (either positional change, or being a star or a role player with the team)
  • You never know when you will be seen, or what knowledge tips the balance in your favor (coaches know coaches, and players know coaches just like people network in business, you experience success in networking in soccer)

Healthy Holidays

The holidays are a treasured time to take a step back from our daily lives and focus on spending time celebrating the season with friends and family. While it is perfectly acceptable to splurge a bit, young athletes must still be mindful of their nutritional habits during this time of year. Kids.gov gives some great suggestions for enjoying all the treats of the season without overindulging:
  • Nibble on healthy snacks like whole grain crackers, fruit, or raw vegetables before a big feast.
  • When you are at a party or having a holiday meal, choose healthier foods like veggies or fruits.
  • It takes your brain some time to signal you are full. Wait 10-15 minutes before eating seconds. It'll keep you from overeating!
  • It's not rude to say no to food. Don't be pressured to eat, if you aren't hungry.
  • Eating holiday goodies like fudge, peanut brittle, cookies, and other baked goods is fine, but eat them in small pieces.
  • You can help make healthy holiday food as a family.  Look for low-fat recipes that substitute butter and oil with non-fat ingredients like applesauce or pumpkin.
