Pastor's Pen

Each first Sunday of the month we take two very different offerings to help others. The first offering is of canned and dry foods for the Hope Ministries Food Bank. Every first week of the month a carload of food is transported to the food bank. The folks at Hope Ministries are always happy to see us.  They count on our offering of food to help get them through the first week of the month. The second offering is a monetary offering at the altar rail for the Matthew 25 Fund. The Matthew 25 Fund seeks to help" the least, the last and the lost" of our community by offering financial assistance when needed. Usually we help to pay a utility bill, sometimes we give out gas cards and on rare occasions we give other types of assistance if funds are available.

Every Tuesday and Thursday, Rev. Colleen and I meet with individuals who hear about our Matthew 25 Fund and come seeking help.  Most often we help with the utility bill. You may wonder what kind of folks do we see? Usually, its the working poor who come through our doors. Folks who work hard and have taken their break or their lunch hour to talk with us. Often, because they have no transportation of their own, they've gotten a ride from a friend or a relative. It's clear they are doing their best to take care of their obligations. They just need a little extra help. One such individual came in recently...only it wasn't for more help. Instead, this woman brought a money order to pay us back.

We help because we can. We help because Christ said, "Whenever you help one of the least of these you have helped me." There are times when I wonder if the little we do is enough and then someone helped by the Matthew 25 Fund returns to say "thank you." It's those thank yous that let me know that whatever we can do...it's always worthwhile. Our Matthew 25 Fund helps those in need. We are the hope they need and sometimes those we help are the hope we need.  A woman, helped last summer, came by recently to give us a money order for $18.50. She is determined to pay back what she could so that we can help others. We never know where or when hope will appear in daily lives but sometimes its at the most surprising times and in the most surprising ways.

May hope be yours this day!
Jane

THIS COMING MONDAY IS THE DEADLINE to Order your Poinsettias for the 2016 Advent Season!

Every year University United Methodist Church offers its congregation the opportunity to purchase beautiful poinsettias as  Christmas Memorials or Honorariums to decorate the sanctuary.

The cost of each poinsettia is $15.00 and this year they will all be red. The deadline for your order is Monday, December 5th. Please be sure to designate if the gift is "in memory of " (person has passed away) or "in honor of" (person is still living).

Poinsettias will be placed in the sanctuary for worship on Sunday, December 11th until Christmas. Those buying poinsettias may take their plant(s) home following the Christmas Eve Worship Services on December 24th. We ask that you take from the Narthex if you are taking yours home at our earlier service that day so the sanctuary will still be decorated for our 11pm service. If you do not wish to purchase a poinsettia but would still like your loved one(s) listed in the Christmas Memorial and Honorarium Insert you may also give a monetary donation in their name.

You may mail this form to the church office (3350 Dalrymple Drive, Baton Rouge, LA 70802) or fill out the form during worship and return it to the ushers. Your check should accompany your order and be written out to UUMC.

or use the insert found in your bulletin on Sunday to place your order!

Help us show the teachers and staff of University Terrace Elementary how much we appreciate all they do for the children we dearly love.

Infants and toddlers (and their Mommies) are invited to join our new Playgroup. We're having so much fun! The little ones are playing and the Mommies are visiting and friendships are forming. We'd love for our group to grow. We are still in the development stage, but the idea is to meet on a regular basis to share the joys and struggles of parenthood, to share resources (pediatricians, babysitter lists, sleep tricks, etc.), and become a peer support group for each other. Beginning in the New Year, we'll meet at 12:00 noon on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month.

Questions/concerns? Contact Vicki Frick at the Church Office (225-344-0343) or by email at vicki@universitymethodist.org.

OPERATION FINAL COOKIE: BAKERS NEEDED!

The LSU Wesley Foundation is looking for YOUR help! We are trying to send some love throughout campus during finals week. One of the ways we are trying to do that is by "Operation: Final Cookie." This is where we pass out cookies (in bags of 3 or 4 with a Wesley sticker on them) and hand them out in Middleton Library in a blitz of sugary, buttered hospitality.

Last year, between UUMC and Wesley we baked over 1,000 cookies, enough for studious students on every floor of Middleton. If we serve everyone in the library, then we'll spill out into campus to give students a meaningful interruption in their day, a reminder that God (and The UMC) loves them.

The blitz in Middleton Library is happening this Monday afternoon, so we ask all cookies be into the church office by Monday by noon at the latest. If you have an oven, some time, and a desire to positively impact a bunch of college students please write Adam at wesley.lsu@gmail.com or give the office a call at (225) 344-7012.

Happy baking!

We will begin November 27 with photographs of Hope.  Please post these on your own Facebook page as well as Instagram and join us for this advent journey through photographs. Please use the hashtag below so that we can all enjoy each others images throughout this season of waiting:

Methodist Church in the world.

We will gather at UUMC at 5:30 PM on Tuesday, December 20th for a snack supper and expect to return around 8:30pm. Afterwards we will go out for hot chocolate/coffee, beignets, and one last round of caroling at Coffee Call to celebrate.  If you plan on attending or have questions, please contact Gary Merrifield at merrifield2@cox.net.

A SERVICE OF
 LESSONS & CAROLS FEATURING
THE CHANCEL CHOIR
AND ORCHESTRA
ON
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15TH
AT 7:00PM

Please make plans on attending and invite friends
and family to this not-to-be missed event!

Complimentary childcare will be provided.
Free and open to the public.

The Festival of Lessons and Carols is a format for a service of Christian worship celebrating the birth of Jesus that is traditionally followed at Christmas. The story of the fall of humanity, the promise of the Messiah, and the birth of Jesus is told in nine short Bible readings from Genesis, the prophetic books and the
Gospels, interspersed with the singing of Christmas carols,
hymns and choral music.

The format was based on an Order drawn up by Edward White Benson, later Archbishop of Canterbury, but at that time, Bishop of Truro, in Cornwall, for use on Christmas Eve 1880. Tradition says that he organized a 10 pm service on Christmas Eve in a temporary wooden shed serving as his cathedral. The original liturgy has since been adapted and used by other churches all over the world..

Operation Point of Hope

As part of a Project Based Learning assignment, Joey Wooldridge (A member of our church and Youth Group) is collecting pencils (regular and color) to send to Operation Give,"an organization that provides opportunities for military service men and women to serve their fellow men by providing opportunities, supplies and resources", for the children of Afghanistan.

A typical Afghanistan classroom has concrete walls, no carpet, worn-out desks, no chalkboard or chalk and is in dire need of pencils, pens, and paper.  Your donation will help to improve a child's hope for a better education, and provide our troops with a tool which can aid them in creating a sense of goodwill in a hostile environment.

A collection bin will be in Fellowship Hall from now until Dec. 11 for you to drop off packs of new pencils.
