Newsletter for the Winnequah School Community - December 2016
In This Issue
From Principal Angie Fassl
It is hard to believe we are one third of the way through the year already!  Teachers will be working on report cards on Friday in addition to having professional development.  Report cards will be available next week on Infinite Campus as well as being sent home with your child.  Please take the time to reflect with your student on the strengths and goal areas for the first part of the year.  One of the focus areas for Winnequah this year is talking with staff and students about having a growth mindset.  Having a growth mindset means making a shift in thinking from 'I can't' to 'I can't yet, but I will do ___ to help me'.  This idea would be great to make a connection to as you review your student's progress so far this year.

Winnequah is organizing several opportunities to help families in need this season.  Our Holiday giving 'tree' is up in the front hallway of the school.  Our third graders are also planning a food drive in the month of December.  If you are able to give in either or both of these ways, we greatly appreciate this support!!

From our Winnequah Family to your family, we wish you all a very happy holidays!

Angie Fassl
Holiday Office Hours
The Winnequah Office will be closed from December 23 - January 2, 2017.

The offices will reopen on January 3rd.

Thank you!

Winnequah Food Drive
Each year Winnequah holds a food drive to benefit the food pantry at St. Stephen's Church. This year the 3rd grade team will be organizing the collecting and counting of items. Classrooms will collect non-perishable food items, personal care items (ex toothpaste, soap, shampoo) and baby items (ex. diapers, wipes).

The food drive will start on Monday, December 5th and run through Friday, December 16th.

Family Outreach
Thanks to all of the parents that answered the call to action with our parent voices groups! We are very excited to have another part to our conversations in hopes of better serving our students and community!  We are still looking for some more voices for our PBIS Committee.  It would be a 1 hour commitment approximately 3 times a year.  The goal of this group would be to help give parent and child views to our positive behavior plan.  If you have a child who has had experiences with our behavior system we want to hear from you--your input is valuable and important to us!  If you are interested please contact Mindy Boyd at [email protected] for more information!

Meet Our New Owl: Sara Hendrickson
Name:  Sara Hendrickson

Position:  4th Grade Teacher

Teaching History: I taught for three years in Andover, MN; eight years in Sun Prairie, WI; and two years at Glacial Drumlin
School here in Monona Grove.

Family Info:
My family mostly lives in the Madison area, including aunts, uncles, cousins, and my grandma.  My parents live in Belleville, my hometown, as does my sister, her husband, and three children.  My brother and his family just moved to Atlanta this summer.  He and his wife are expecting their fourth child in October.

Hobbies:  I enjoy singing, baking, reading, and spending time with my family, especially my niece and nephews.  I am part of the Madison Symphony Chorus, and we perform a couple of times a year with the Madison Symphony Orchestra.  I love baking with and for others, and am always trying out new recipes.

If you could be any animal, what would you be and why: I
would be a polar bear.  I love the snow and cold.

Favorite Color: Blue

Favorite Food:  Pretty much anything my mom makes, but especially her beef roast and mashed potatoes.

Favorite Book:  Adult- To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee; Children's-A Year Down Yonder by Richard Peck

Who is your least favorite superhero and why?  I'm not a fan of any comic book superheroes, so I'd have to say all of them.

Who inspires you? My favorite line from To Kill a Mockingbird
is when Atticus tells Scout, "You never really know a man until you've stepped into his skin and walked around in it."  It struck a chord with me the first time I read it, and has inspired me to always look at daily life from points of view other than my own.

As for a true superhero of mine, a dear friend passed away after losing her second bout with cancer.  For eight years, this woman was the epitome of perseverance and fearlessness while cancer sent curveball after curveball her way.  Even during the worst of times her inner strength remained resolute and her faith unwavering.  She is my ultimate hero and inspiration.

Jim has been telling stories for over 25 years and has preformed all over the world. It was a real treat to have in here at Winnequah.

She graciously rewarded us with a treat which we enjoyed in the sunshine.

5th Grade - School Store

TerraCycle Update
Hello Winnequah Families, here is a quick TerraCycle Update!

With your help, the TerraCycle team has diverted more than 400 lbs of waste from the landfill so far this year!  This effort has earned approximately $208 for Winnequah School so far this year! THANK YOU!
Please help us keep this momentum going, by continuing to collect your items at home and bring them to the Monona Public Library collection spot (all brigades are collected there).  Please allow enough time to sort your items at the library (or pre-sort your items at home) and be sure to place them in the appropriate bins at the library. This extra step that we can all do, really helps us keep our library collection spot organized and clean for everyone, while also helping our volunteers. If you have any questions about items we can accept, or what bin certain items go into, please check out our Facebook page (link below) or call.  We would love to hear from you!

We want to send a huge shout out to Cub Scout Pack 146 who volunteered at our October Box and Ship at the library.  The Cub Scouts boxed up over 85# of TerraCycle items for us and they also did a great job on making and decorating a new bin and updating another for the cafeteria collection.  Be sure to check out the larger chip bag bin next time you are in the cafeteria.  Thanks Cub Scouts & parents for all of your help!

If you, or your group (girl scouts, cub scouts, sports team, etc.), are interested in working a future library box & ship event, please contact us to make arrangements.

Are you interested in TerraCycle and what we do? We would love to have you join our monthly meetings.

Our upcoming meetings are Monday, December 5th and Monday, February 6th (both held at 7:30pm at the Waypoint Restaurant).

Questions?  Contact Kathryn Christopherson at 608-279-7568 or [email protected].

Need a list of all the items you can TerraCycle?  Check out the TerraCycle page of the Winnequah School website, and/or like TerraCycle Winnequah on Facebook.

Art News
Winnequah 4th and 5th graders enjoyed their field trip to the Overture Center for the Arts, where they attended the Madison Symphony Orchestra concert "The Planets" and took in the 2016 Wisconsin Triennial at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA). This show features the work of over 34 artists from around Wisconsin, and runs through January 8, 2017. It was quite thought provoking, and our students had the chance to interact with museum docents as they discussed and asked questions about the works on display.

Art classes continue to work with Big Ideas while also working on finer skills like craftsmanship. Craftsmanship refers to the quality of how something is made or crafted. The following image shows improvement of craftsmanship in a 4th grade printed portrait from the first (left) to the second (right) print. Students were asked to make improvements in their choices of paper and ink color to enhance contrast, as well as refine the quality of each printed image they produced.
