November Students of the Month
Brendan Feeley - 2017

Eagle Scout, Brendan Feeley recently achieved this honor with Troop 200.  To receive this award, he had to build and lead a service project at his church.  Brendan has been scouting since he was in first grade.  He has served as Patrol Leader, Quartermaster, and Troop Guide.  Brendan currently volunteers at Clinton First Aid and Rescue Squad.  He is also a summer camp counselor at Camp Carr where he works with primarily six and seven year olds.  Brendan played JV Boys Tennis in freshman and sophomore year.  Last year, he began playing varsity where he played first doubles with Richard Chen.  Brendan is a member of the National Honor Society, Science Honor Society, and is the Treasurer of the Math Honor Society.  His favorite class at North was AP Biology with Mrs. Flynn.  Even though the class is a lot of work, it taught him how to study for a college-level class and Mrs. Flynn always knew how to keep everyone motivated with her “dingy” analogy.  Brendan’s favorite memories at North were rolling a bowling ball down the hallway in Freshman Physics and seeing Governor Christie speak on an AP Government field trip.  Next year, Brendan plans on majoring in chemical engineering at either University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Rutgers, or Northwestern University.

Urszula Wisniewska -  2017

Senior, Urszula Wisniewska would like to pursue a career as a veterinarian.  Urszula’s favorite classes at North have been Honors Anatomy and AP Biology.  Honors Anatomy with Mr. Owdij is a really interesting class and Urszula loves learning about the subject.  AP Biology with Mrs. Flynn has helped steer her towards her career path.  Urszula is a member of French Honor Society, Science Honor Society, Student Ambassadors, and Interact.  She will also be inducted into National Honor Society this month.  One of Urszula’s favorite memories at North was going to see Broadway shows with the French Honor Society.  She also liked being a Student Ambassador and helping out on Take Your Child to Work Day.  Urszula currently works at the Hunterdon County YMCA where she teaches swim lessons to children.  During the summer, she works as a camp counselor to six and seven year old children at Camp Carr, which is run by the Hunterdon County YMCA.  Urszula attended Camp Carr when she was younger.  It has been rewarding to be a leader to kids and work in a program that once impacted her life.  Urszula is applying to many schools including Rutgers, Penn State, Quinnipiac, Stony Brook, and FDU.  She hopes to get into Cornell and study Animal Science to become a veterinarian.

November Athletes of the Month
Mitchell Finnegan- 2017

Captain of the Football team, Mitchell Finnegan has been a committed team member and serious student-athlete all four years on the team.  As captain, he became more vocal in his relationship with the team and more visible in his consistently outstanding performance.  Mitchell plays the positions of running back on offense and linebacker on defense.  His strongest skills in both positions are his speed and strength.  As a running back, Mitchell had 10 receptions for 60 yards, rushed for 1,281 yards, and made 11 touch downs.  Defensively, he had 82 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, 1 interception, and 5 pass deflections.  His performance on the field has set a high standard for his teammates for not only this year, but for athletes at North Hunterdon in the years to come.  Mitchell has also been a leader in the weight room by always setting an example for the entire student body.  He was the proud winner of the “Hard Hat Award” which is given to the leader of the weight room.  Outside of sports, Mitchell attends meetings and events with the National Honor Society.  Even though Mitchell has been playing football since he was in the fourth grade, he is undecided on whether he will play in college next year.

Anna DiMarcello- 2017

Senior, Anna DiMarcello has been running competitively since she was in the fourth grade.  Anna helped lead her team to the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex Championship, Skyland Conference Championship, and North II, Group IV Sectional Championship both as a junior and a senior.  Her strongest skills in running are her mental toughness, determination, and work ethic.  Anna is a distance runner for cross country, but also runs the 800 meter and mile for Track & Field.  Her personal best for the 5k is 18:43, 2:13.5 for the 800 meter, and 5:56 in the mile run.  Anna volunteers as a coach for grade school girls at the North Hunterdon Lions Track Club three days a week in the Spring.  She is also a member of the National Honor Society.  Anna has verbally committed to running cross country as well as track and field at Dartmouth College next fall.  She is undecided about her major, but is interested in health, social sciences, or psychology.

  Social Hosting Laws
With the impending holiday season, it is important to understand the dangers and consequences of hosting a teenage party at your house in which alcohol is present.  “Under New Jersey state law, anyone who purposely or knowingly offers, serves or makes alcohol available to an underage person or entices or encourages that person to drink alcohol is a disorderly person. It is also violation of the law for a host to make their property available (including leaving the property in care of another person) for the consumption of alcohol by an underage person. There is an exception in the law for parents or guardians who provide alcohol to their child.”  If your child is hosting a party at your house, it is important to make yourself aware of who is coming to the party and what they are bringing with them.  It is also

important to frequently check on the party to ensure that alcohol and other drugs are not being used in your house.  Many teens say that they would think twice about serving or allowing alcohol at parties in their house if they thought or knew their parents would find out.  Have a conversation with your child about alcohol, parties and the social hosting laws.

If you have any questions for the Student Assistance Coordinator, please contact Tara Kraatz at tkraatz@nhvweb.net or 908-713-4167.  The Student Assistance Office is here to provide support services for students.

AP Scholars Recognized
Every year College Board and the AP program offer several AP Scholar awards to recognize students who have demonstrated college-level achievement through AP Courses and Exams. There are three levels of AP Scholar Achievement and this year we are recognizing a total of 186 students, some of whom graduated in June. In addition, 9 of these students are also named as
National AP Scholars. The levels of achievement are as follows:
  • AP Scholar recognition is granted to students who receive scores of 3 or higher on 3 or more exams.
  • AP Scholar with Honors is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.
  • AP Scholar with Distinction is granted to students who receive an average score of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.

National AP Scholar is granted to students in the United States who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP Exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams.

In honor of their achievement, current AP scholar students are invited to a breakfast at 7:30 a.m. in Café B annex where they will be recognized and receive a certificate of recognition.

To view a listing of all students receiving these awards, please click here.
AP Information Session

In our continuing effort to better serve the needs of students and parents, we will be holding an Advanced Placement Information Session on Thursday, December 8, 2016 from 2:30 – 3:10 pm in the small gym. We are holding this informational session prior to the beginning of scheduling in an effort to give students and parents the opportunity to speak with individual AP instructors and current students from each content area where an AP course is offered where they can learn about the requirements and rigor of each AP course we will be offering at North next year.

In the past, we have held this information session in the evening but this year in an effort to give more students an opportunity to explore AP options available to them, we have changed the time so it can be held immediately after school. Parents are welcome to attend.

Friendship Day

Friendship Day, an annual event at North Hunterdon High School since 1994, was held on November 23, 2016.  This annual event unites special education students and students from general education classes with the simple goal of making friends.  The Interact Club runs this event, which this year consisted of 240 students, broken into 8 teams.  Teams participated in a variety of team building and trust activities throughout the half day of school.  This event is an integral part of the school district’s goal to create an all-inclusive environment for students of all abilities.
