Georgia Department of Revenue rejects Fulton County tax digest
Important information regarding Milton's 2017 property tax bills
Dear Milton Residents:

As you may have read today, the Georgia Department of Revenue has rejected the 2017 Fulton County tax digest. In order for Milton to bill its 2017 property taxes, we must first receive the approved tax digest from Fulton County.

It is our understanding that Fulton County is seeking a temporary collection order through the courts, so that temporary tax notices can be sent. Upon receipt of an approved tax digest or a judge's ruling in favor of Fulton County's temporary collection order request, the City of Milton will begin billing its residents for their 2017 property taxes. The due date for Milton property taxes will be 60 days after the bill date.

Unlike some municipalities, Milton has sufficient cash on-hand to continue city operations. While we may need to dip into our reserves, we will not need to borrow (i.e. tax anticipation note).

Milton's fiscal year runs October 1 to September 30. This means that the largest portion of our revenues are collected at the end of the current budget cycle. As such, we recognize that we are not going to receive the projected FY2017 revenues as budgeted, and our finance department is currently assessing and evaluating the budget to make any and all necessary adjustments in the short-term.

In addition, our finance team will begin exploring long-term considerations should this situation carryover into the 2018 budget cycle and should we find ourselves in a similar situation with Fulton County tax assessments in the future.

Sincerely,
Your Milton Communications Team
