December 6 6:30 PM PAWS Office, Newark
Our PAWS for Reading program is based on the concept that a pet's non-judgmental acceptance and loving attention can help new and struggling readers feel more comfortable and less self-conscious when reading aloud. These sessions create a forum where readers can practice their skills in a "safe" place without criticism. PAWS' goal is to provide a positive reading experience where the reader builds confidence, strengthens literacy skills, and develop a love for reading. PAWS for Reading sessions are held during the day at schools and in the evening at libraries on a regular, set schedule.

Sometimes petting and brushing your dog isn't enough during a visit. Working for prolonged periods of time with kids or elders sometimes calls for a few extra "tricks up your sleeve." We have created a fun, hour-long class that will give you scads of ideas on easy, simple activities you can incorporate into your visits - with not much more than you already have - a dog, treats, and a few well chosen "things" to bring along.

Sites to Celebrate

This fall, two PAWS teams began working with pre-adjudicated youth at the New Castle County Detention Center in Wilmington, DE. Thanks to dedicated therapy teams Laurie Napolin & her golden retriever Scout and Charlotte Kosiek with her German shepherds, Zara & RJ, a bit of normalcy is added to these kids' days. The Detention Center (along with the state-run Cottages) are always looking for wonderful volunteers to work with their youth.

More than the Gift of Sleep

Arlo and I were just finishing our in-patient visiting today at Nemours|A.I. duPont Hospital for Children when we received a request for a dog. The little girl, aged 8, smiled widely when we walked into her room and promptly fell asleep with Arlo snuggled in. I asked the Mom if her daughter needed rest and perhaps we should go. The Mom teared up and told me that the little girl was exhausted but they couldn't get her to sleep. So we stayed until the little one awoke.
And there's more. Mom, Dad, and daughter were in the hospital earlier this year, and the little girl was very upset. One of our teams (described as a man and his German Shepherd - Mike Zdinak & Ellis) was walking by and stopped. The Shepherd rested his head on the girl's bed and refused to leave her. The mom said that these were the moments that allowed her daughter to get some perspective on the her hospitalization and her condition improved.
The Mom thanked me repeatedly for all that PAWS does. "You've made everything better for my daughter, and I don't know how to thank you."

"The holiday season is here, and all is hairy and bright. While you're shopping for all your favorite people, don't forget your four-legged friends - after all, a dog's love is unconditional, and not just at Christmas.
